Anyone not going to have heating on at all ?

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 12:01

So apparently my electric bill is going to be 2344.57 a year. And my gas will be 3363.23 a year.

According to the bill I just got between 8th-15th September I used 29.82 in electricity. And between 8th--15th September I used 2.22 in gas.

When winter sets in I'm planning on not having the heating on at all. We will wear extra layers and have blankets etc. Then my gas should be very simlar to what it is now?

I have heard that I could save money by using an air fryer ? And simlar gadgets is this true or is it just a trend ? Are they suitable for large familys ? Is there anything else that could help ?

I’m in an all electric house.

I have my thermostat set to come on if the temp falls below 5C. I have only electric heating and it is a wet system on a 6kw boiler so will be about £2ph to run outside of E7 hours. There is no way I’m putting it on except for overnight guests.

The immersion heater is on during E7 hours. My house is very old and while I have good roof insulation and double glazing, the temp at the moment is 16C both inside and out!

as long as I can have hot baths, electric blanket and a slug of red wine from time to time, it’ll be ok. Also multifuel burner. I think I will be really cold first thing in the morning in Jan/Feb but can just grit through that.

HorribleHerstory · 24/09/2022 15:12

Not heating has been my plan this year too, OP.

Our house was heated with one plug in fan heater which was run for a max of 20 mins a time with endless warnings about putting it on for too long, when I was a child. We used to queue up to get dressed in front of it. Then as an adult I’ve done 3-4 winters in houses with no heating or hot water (including with baby dc)

PPs are right that the mould can be a problem, but it was less so when we had no hot water either as less sources of moisture indoors.

pps are also right about the pipes, we had one burst when it got down to 3 degrees indoors in I think 2010? It was a cold winter. Thankfully insurance paid for that one but it was a big mess. I’m currently setting the heating to come on at 5 degrees indoors to avoid this.

my main day to day problem has always been getting the washing dry, how are you planning for that especially on cold and rainy days. It seems to take weeks to dry indoors without the heating on.

Here is mine from my last bill Mid August to Mid September and I used £42 of electric and £5 of gas in that period so nearly same as you.

I think I'm using around 30.00 a week on gas and 2.50 ish a week on electricity.

So did you use 5.00 gas and 42. 00 in electricity for the month ?

😔 this is not something I'm doing likely. It's a survival thing. Heat or eat. Heating or electricity. It's not an actual choose just for the sake of it

Are you able to get an evening or weekend job to bring some extra money in?

Even 5 hours per week on a Saturday will bring in a minimum if £2,500 per year which will be enough to have your house heated fairly frequently.

Are you talking about the cost in £, or your usage in kwh?

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/09/2022 14:26

Ive assumed OP was referring to kwh in her opening post figures, not £.

No that was in money £2344.57 electricity for a year

Gas £3363.23 for a year

dementedpixie · 24/09/2022 15:20

@Bycandlelight22 what do you use thats gas powered? Between 1st and 31st of August we used 280kwh of gas (£29) and 479kwh of electricity (£144).

We have gas central heating but the thermostat is turned right down just now so no heating coming on. Hot water is only on for 1 hour per day as our oven and shower is electric and appliances are cold fill. Gas hob too.

We use a lot of electricity but it's 2 adults and 2 teens so lots of showers and consoles on the go

InterestQ · 24/09/2022 15:21

Horribleherstory - this might not be relevant to you as I obviously don’t have a gas boiler but when I ran a programme to use the washer dryer (the first time I used the dryer in 12 months) it actually wasn’t that bad in terms of energy. I try to aim for under 10kw a day and with running the tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridge freezer and immersion all still came to 8 for that day (I didn’t have a bath though which just raise it)

Can you work out exactly how many KW it will use? I have a heated airer that I leave on overnight in the guest room but now I’m not sure that it is cheaper after all, though it does warm the room a little.

dementedpixie · 24/09/2022 15:22

How many people in your household?
Are those figure calculated from the old October prices or the new ones?
What is your actual annual usage in kwh?

mewkins · 24/09/2022 15:22

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 15:17

I think you need to call and ask wtf this is based on. Do you know what kwh you used in your last home?

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/09/2022 15:22

Just to double check- the forecast they've given you.. was that in the last week or two?
Just wondering if it's a forecast from when prices were due to triple in October.
Do they say how many kwh they estimate you'll use for each fuel?

Hopeandlove · 24/09/2022 15:24

I refuse to put the heating on before middle of October normally and it goes off in march.

it’s on 5-7 am and 4-8 that’s it and set at 19.

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 15:27

gogohmm · 24/09/2022 14:24

Are you sure about those numbers? My combined gas and electric estimate is £2100 for a 4 bed new build. 4 adults so fairly big users as 2 of them seem incapable of turning off lights and appliances.

I would investigate why so high for your electric (unless you are a mansion) £1200 for the electricity portion seems consistent among my friends and family

I have just dug out bill from August. It says

£1327.75 a year for electricity
£1748.03 a year for gas.

The September one days
£2344.57 for electricity
£3363.23 for gas

So I think this is including the rise that's happening in October

OP posts:
Lawazzalawoo · 24/09/2022 15:29

I think those figures are off somewhere.

I live in a a new build 3 bedroom property which does not have gas, only electricity and have been quoted £3500 for the year. So half of what you have been quoted. This is after the increase on 1st October.

HMSSophia · 24/09/2022 15:31

Of course you'll have the heating on. Once the temp drops to say 14 or below you'll put it on.

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 15:32

mewkins · 24/09/2022 15:10

Sorry I criss posted. I agree with the other person. The estimate is not accurate. Have you moved to supplier when you moved in ? They may be basing it on the previous person who lived there.

No one has lived here before me.

Does it give how many kwh, rathet than just cost?

PigglePuggle · 24/09/2022 15:35

My in law's removed all of the radiators in their house except for the heated towel rail in the bathroom! They did this years ago as FIL was always complaining he was too hot.

I’m going to hold off until I give birth in December and we have a newborn in the house but we have been overpaying in advance to help cover the cost of this

Maybe those figures were pre-empting the January hike? Has the estimated kwh remained unchanged from your previous bill? Use a calculator like this one

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/what-are-the-price-cap-unit-rates-/

dementedpixie · 24/09/2022 15:38

@Bycandlelight22 but which October figures is it using? The original ones were higher than what the price guarantee prices ended up being

Think electricity is now capped around 34p/kwh and gas at 10.3p/kwh. What figures are they using in their calculations?

dementedpixie · 24/09/2022 15:39

And these capped rates are staying for 2 years so there won't be a rise in January

johnd2 · 24/09/2022 15:39

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 12:25

The house is a new build so should be well insulated. In my old house I never had heating on because the insulation was so bad. And never got frozen pipes . So hopefully it will be ok. Thinking the same damp wise .

Something is wrong here. You can't spend that much on gas in a new build unless you either have a gas leak or your hot water tap is on 24/7.
I thought you were going to say you live in 5 bed Victorian house.
Are you sure that's the amount of usage you have for gas? Around 30000kwh per year?

A 6kw boiler won't use 6kw all the time the heating is on, only until the house is up to temperature.

After a cold night it takes about 30 minutes for our house to warm, then the boiler stops heating until the thermostat tells it.

Once it hits the temperature you have chosen, it switches off, then occasionally back on as the house cools.

Unless it's heat output is less than your house needs.

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/09/2022 15:41

The kwh forecast will be on your bill.
It might be under your tariff details in a separate section to the £cost prediction
Mine's in the bit where my tariff details are.

Anyone not going to have heating on at all ?
