My Lidl / Tesco shop for a week for six people was only 3.52 cheaper in Lidl

I know, I know I'm going to get how can six people live off this a week, that's not my point.

I did a online basket with Tesco then bought most of it in Lidl today. I'm quite surprised the difference is so low. A few things in Tesco are always out off stock online and there's no direct comparison for a few things.

However its 2.50 to get it delivered to my door from Tesco.

I'm seriously wondering why I shop at Lidl now except for top ups. Plus my cucumbers looked dodgy. Not sure they will last or if they just paler.

For £6 more delivered, it's not much saving for the hassle

There is very little difference, plus Aldi/lidl are a false economy as their meat, fruit and veg isn’t nearly as fresh so you waste a lot more.

Aldi and lidl started out cheaply to essentially bring in the custom and have gradually increased their prices meaning that customers haven’t really noticed and continue to insist they’re cheap. It’s like the frog in boiling water analogy.

Uptheclarets · 16/09/2022 07:31

I tend to do a bulk shop at Aldi/Lidl with tins, cereals, rice, flour etc and then do my weekly shop at Tesco. I've found all the supermarkets have put their prices up and reduced their choice quite a lot (cereals in Tesco being one, and I don't think it's just to do with the grain shortage)

Heatherbell1978 · 16/09/2022 07:34

I think if you're sticking to online shops only at Tesco then you're good at just ordering what you need and perhaps there won't be a difference. I shop only at Aldi and Lidl now and see a huge difference but that's because I tend to visit the shop and I can easily spend double just browsing - there just isn't the choice of products at Aldi or Lidl to browse!

Relocatiorelocation · 16/09/2022 07:41

I go to Aldi every 4-6 weeks to stick up on their cheap stuff, but have Tesco deliveries for my main shop.
The fuss of going to Aldi, them not having what I need, having to go somewhere else....my time has more value than saving £3 something on a weekly shop.

gogohmm · 16/09/2022 07:42

Depends so much on what you buy. Generic items tend to be cheaper in lidl and their specials are excellent. I tend to decide what to buy in store once I see what looks good/offers

gogohmm · 16/09/2022 07:44

For me though lidl is closest, 5 mins walk, so I shop 3-4 times a week on foot

MillyMoo1113 · 16/09/2022 07:47

For some people it's worth the time walking to save £3 a week. That's £12 a month. That my tv license almost paid for.

Those thinking £12 a month saving isn't worth it, have probably never had to go without.

I get that petrol costs could dispute the saving but for those who it doesn't, £12 a month could be a lot of money.

Wearefoooked22 · 16/09/2022 08:03

i find aldi doesn’t have as much choice as asda/Morrison’s,that’s the only reason I spend less.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 16/09/2022 08:08

I shop in aldi and have really seen some prices really ramp up in recent weeks. Not just ten percent like inflation either. Don’t honestly think there’s much difference between an aldi shop and Asda now. I’ve done an Asda shop recently and it’s much the same cost.

But Asda will win out as they deliver and I hate food shopping. Used aldi as they really were much cheaper for what I buy!

I’ve been shopping in Aldi for years and very rarely had problems with freshness to be honest. My in laws have tried Morrisons recently and had major issues. Sometimes i think that it just varies Store to store.

Rebecca75 · 16/09/2022 08:14

I stock up on cereal, coconut milk, pasta, bread, peanut butter, olive oil and a few other staples that we use a lot at Aldi. The rest of my shopping is Tesco, the fruit and veg doesn’t last at Aldi so although cheaper isn’t good for a weekly shop imo.

Sswhinesthebest · 16/09/2022 08:14

I once decided to try to save a bit of money and shopped in Aldi for a few weeks. I realised there wasn’t a great difference if you usually bought multiples of the special offers in Tesco like I usually did.

I went back to Tesco!

ManagementPlan · 16/09/2022 08:21

I find Lidl much cheaper. DH refused to come with me to Teaco because I spend all my time saying "how much?", but TBF I haven't been to Tesco much since the pandemic.

You do need to buy their own brand stuff though. If you want the brands you recognise you won't save much. Their own brand things are, IMO, much better quality than the equivalently priced basics ranges at the other supermarkets.

canyouextrapol · 16/09/2022 08:31

Tesco any time delivery saver is 6.99 a month I think. So if you're having shopping delivered every week it's definitely worth it. Especially if there's better things for you to do with your time

walkersareback · 16/09/2022 08:46

I went to Aldi this week but had to pop in to Sainsbury's on the way home as there were a couple of bits I needed - Aldi and Sainsbury's nearly next door to each other - and I was surprised to see that some things were cheaper in Sainsbury's. Felt a bit daft as I should have done the whole shop there. I think that as they are do close to each other Sainsbury's price match.

Manekinek0 · 16/09/2022 08:52

I have been a Lidl shopper for years but recently I have changed to Asda for the bulk of my shopping and Sainsbury's for fruit and veg. I work most days and both are on the way.

TiddleyWink · 16/09/2022 09:28

I’ve gone back to Waitrose after shopping with Tesco for the last six months to save money. The difference just wasn’t worth it anymore. I buy mainly essentials range from Waitrose which are way better quality than own brand at Tesco, so it’s not like I’m buying all the duchy organic goose eggs or anything.

Tesco barely do any good offers anymore whereas Waitrose do loads of items at half price each week, useful things that we use regularly. Tesco barely did substitutions anymore so things either didn’t get delivered or were replaced with crap. Waitrose always provide branded stuff in place of out of stock essentials (although we now run the risk of the family getting a taste for proper weetabix and fairy washing up liquid!) Also, they fall over themselves to give you stuff free. Oh that £4 box of cereal has a slightly ripped box? I do apologise madam, I’ll take it off the bill. Oh that milk has leaked slightly in the crate? I’ll take that bottle of wine off by way of apology!

So for me it’s just not worth the £8 or so lower bill at Tesco, although I recognise I’m privileged to be able to make that choice. People think I’m rolling in it to shop at Waitrose but if you stop and look at it, it’s cheaper than you’d think. I’ve tried aldi and for me it’s a false economy.

FluffyFluffMonster · 16/09/2022 09:32

I started shopping at Aldi 2 years ago but fucking hell the prices recently are awful! They have literally doubled. Every time I go things have gone up in price and for the quality it just isn't worth it! I will start shopping in Asda/Tesco again.

ivegotthisyeah · 16/09/2022 09:33

Interesting, I am a Lidl / aldi shopper but have recently changed to sainsburys of all places as they now do price match aldi and there quality of food is better I can get everything and delivery to my door is £1!!! I never thought I would be a sainsburys shopper as always found it expensive but honestly at the moment it's the same!!

Rapidtango · 16/09/2022 09:35

I think most supermarkets are similar now because the margins are so tight on the basics due to Brexit, power crisis, shortages etc. Aldi and Lidl used to be way cheaper than the others and I like the fact that you can be in and out in twenty minutes with a weekly shop.

Aldi opened in our town about 12 years ago. I used to take DMum and we'd do a weekly shop - for several years we'd often be the only car in the car park. It seemed to change 6-7 years ago and just continued to get busier.

Roselilly36 · 16/09/2022 10:04

Yes I agree definitely not a cheap now, Tesco do a price match of lots of essentials. And they have some really great clubcard offers too. Lidl have recently changed their rewards scheme, so we have stopped shopping there for our main shop.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2022 10:06

I find I can buy better quality at Aldi or Lidl for close to the same price. ie their deluxe or extra special versions rather than bog standard at Tesco.

fyn · 16/09/2022 10:11

I’ve stopped going to Aldi as much. It doesn’t seem particularly cheaper and I always have to go to Tesco or Waitrose to get ingredients that they don’t sell. It isn’t worth saving a few pounds to drive all around town trying to get the things we need.

Ashamedteeth · 16/09/2022 21:23

Another one here who has tried to convert from Tesco to Aldi. I find the only
reason I spend marginally less is because there is less options to impulse buy.

i find the store cupboard items cheaper, but thats about it. Also hate i cannot get my more ‘speciality’ items like turkey bacon and my preferred condiments, plus my dog’s things.

so now i’ve taken to switching between the two, stocking up the best from both in between. As a single person I rely on my freezer a lot for splitting packs of chicken, veg etc so don’t find the Aldi shorter dates to be a huge issue.

Stopsnowing · 16/09/2022 21:29

Aldi is good for canned and cereals etc but rubbish for veg etc
