£23-ish in Sainsbury’s, top up shop as grocery delivery is due on Saturday.

kessiebird · 17/10/2022 16:05

Me too @HalfWomanHalfChocolate we are both 20% tax payers and I made two financial decisions based on that two year protection. Neither hugely risky; I voted to accept a pay rise below inflation meaning we'd get a back dated award in November and made a decision on the length of our holiday next week, costing around £800 more. Not able to change either now. I am quite risk adverse but the feeling of uncertainty now ahead is awful. Quite breathtakingly badly managed. Spectacular bungle-fest is about right!

ememem84 · 17/10/2022 16:36

£7.85 next. A pair of trousers, a shirt and a vest top for me. The rest was on gift card.

www2.next.co.uk/g65133s2/m36380#m36380

bought these. Which I think are ace!!!!

needastrongoneagain · 17/10/2022 17:55

Thanks for your kind words. They are appreciated. I'm mostly coping (those that have been around a long time will know that I'm a 'coper'j. That's not to say I don't have my moments, I was very jittery over the weekend and slept very little. But I'm okay again now. We've a business to run, amongst other stuff, and that keeps me occupied, very occupied!

£24 Asda. Must admit I caved as I am having a good, frugal month, and bought a jumper, plus milk, chocolate for DH, cheese.

Frugal win was a lovely lady giving me her parking ticket with 4 hours on it left!

I feel it to kessie, personally and as a small business owner. We've been through enough these last few months.

Half, it doesn't make you immune to financial pressures, being a higher rate tax payer. There's only so much reducing outgoings any household can do before the squeeze is felt.

Right, last nights leftovers sorted and made into a bolognaise. Just off to put the washing out to be 'darked' on.

This week is going to be very 'use it up out of the freezer'!

Timetoswitch · 17/10/2022 18:17

Spectacular bungle-fest is a perfect description half

The energy is such a worry, just when I thought we had some breathing space on it Sad

Half term is on the horizon!

lost a post earlier, so this is the short version.

CurlsandCurves · 17/10/2022 18:49

Love those trousers @ememem84

I’m exhausted! Day 1 of the rental renovation. I spent most of my day spraying the walls with neat white vinegar and washing it off along with all the nicotine. Gross, it was running down my arms and when I did the ceilings, dripping into my hair! DH and FIL cleared the hugely overgrown garden. It needed doing while the weather is still dry and halfway decent.

Going to work tomorrow for a break, ha ha.

BigSkies2022 · 17/10/2022 20:00

Hello everyone, have been on the downlow for a couple of weeks because a) parents' sale and purchase finally went through and the last couple of weeks were innnnteeennnnsssse. Actually, really horrible, and all down to their cowpat of a buyer. i*a o*e, you know who you are, and that you behaved in an abominable, bullying way to two rather frail old people (86 and 91, actually) and there was just no excuse for it. There has to be something wrong with a system where everyone can work and spend money for 3 months, and it's not until exchange that you actually find out if someone intends to make good on their promises. She was a c**t up to the very last minute, wanting to keep everyone dangling and continue her power play.

But in three weeks time, I will be driving my parents to their lovely, new flat just down the road from us all, and they will start a happy, safer and more sociable life. I'm very proud of their resilience and determination to start again rather than simply moulder on.

The other thing that has been keeping me busy is the changeover between tenancies at my rental flat and god yes, the cleaning needed. It wasn't left in a bad state, but neither was it left in the state that the outgoing tenants took it on. I clean every inch, and wash everything, and steam it all, before I even start on the repairs and new painting. It's always a busy time.

So I haven't really been keeping a very close eye on finances, except I haven't been spending much, because we've been eating what's in the house, we've not been going out, we've not turned on the heating, and I haven't had time to get my hair done! We are, however, planning holidays for next year, and will soon be booking; I'm will be overpaying on the mortgage from January while DH has begun saving into a car fund. I will also be trying to build my cash reserves, save for holidays, and clear a credit card within the 0% period, so lots of financial goals for 2023 already.

I did have a birthday though! DH bought me some earbuds, so I can listen to my French app and block out the noise from others passengers on the buses and trains; and a lovely rechargeable lamp from Pooky, to light up gloomy corners, of which there are many in this house. I treated myself to some hydrangeas and eucalyptus for the house, and a pair of trousers with money my parents sent me, bless them. And DS called me on the day and I had a lovely chat with him.

I have been having vivid and not very pleasant dreams, so I think the stress of the house purchase/sale has been leaking out of me. I'm sure that will subside. We are still having lovely weather, and I tidied up the front garden on Sunday, which was long overdue.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 17/10/2022 20:19

Have been so busy with MumBobs l am hardly online these days 🥺
Not put the heating on here yet and am trying my best to dry the washing outside still because it costs 80p an hour to use my dryer 🤯
Managed to do so far but it's going to get difficult from now on 🙄
Had some success with the Good to go bags from Morrisons, cooked meals for £2.99 , it's just sausages and mash or pie and chips but it's cooked and hot and because l am so busy with MumBobs it's so convenient.
Hope everyone is doing ok☺️
Take care everyone 😊

Alfiemoon1 · 17/10/2022 21:29

Evening all
spends today £20 petrol dh gets paid on Friday so will fill up then £1.50 ish on milk resisted walking round Morrisons just headed straight to the milk to avoid getting

Alfiemoon1 · 17/10/2022 21:31

Oops avoid getting tempted by offers I didn’t really need

WeightoftheWorld · 17/10/2022 23:23

Need Hope you are ok.

BigSkies Sorry to hear about your DP's house-selling saga, sounds awful, I hope you and they are both ok.

NSD for me as my only spend I will claim back as a work expense eventually.

I have to get up at 6am for work tomorrow, have had a migraine since 8pm and been trying to sleep since 10pm. The migraines are from lack of sleep, yet still I cannot sleep. So depressing and the likelihood is that the exact same thing will happen tomorrow evening again due to the ongoing lack of sleep.

ememem84 · 18/10/2022 05:49

weight what’s causing the initial lack of sleep which causes the migraine?

hopefully you got a bit more sleep. Xxx

I’m up. Catface had thrown up a piece of grass at the top of the stairs. I haven’t cleaned it yet but once everyone’s awake I will do. Put an old towel over it though.

I was going to go for a run this morning but it’s so foggy and eerie looking. Think the Saharan sand is here again.

I am sat outside though with a tea.

school pick up for me again today as dm is away then parents evening later. Half term next week. Hoorah!

CurlsandCurves · 18/10/2022 07:43

@BigSkies2022 youve had a lot going on, goodness. Glad to hear the parents will be settled in their lovely new home very soon and you can put it all behind you.

@WeightoftheWorld migraines are horrible aren’t they? Sounds like it’s a bit of a vicious circle, can’t sleep but need to sleep. Do you have any time to do any quiet meditation, even just a couple of minutes before bed? The Headspace app is great for this and it’s free. Might help calm your mind enough to drop off.

I’ve just got jobs to do round the house before work later on. Was going for a NSD but then I forgot to buy conditioner in the supermarket yesterday. So £2 ish for a couple of bottles of that when I’m in town later.

Laska2Meryls · 18/10/2022 12:36

Packing the van today in preparation for our few days out.. Impressed myself this morning by getting up early to make a new batch of cheesy oatcakes as DH had the oven on for bread baking anyway.. Also a batch of Bolognese sauce ( a portion we will take and 2 more for the freezer) which is now slow cooking in the wonderbag ..

£15 in Tesco on mince, milk, parmesan, fresh pasta ( much easier to cook in the van) and salad veggies .
That should be that for me , though DH is going to the dentist ( he'll pay for that from is own money) but is parking at Sainsbury's so will no doubt will come back with something which will have to come out of the food budget ....

Laska2Meryls · 18/10/2022 12:40

Its still so warm and sunny here that we haven't needed the heating on at all yet . I was swimming in the sea again over the weekend and yesterday and definitely do not need my wetsuit yet .
Id like to go again today but I think that time will be against me..

Decafflatteplease · 18/10/2022 13:55

Morning, well, afternoon all!

Beautiful sunny day here got 3 loads of washing outside! I think it's warmer outside than it is in, infact I sat in the car for a while after school run getting some work done as it's warmer than our house 😂

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 18/10/2022 15:19

BigSkies2022 · 18/10/2022 17:25

£68 in Aldi, which feels quite spendy for us. I did however buy loads of different cheeses, and have even picked up a few bits for putting away for Christmas. Still, will have to watch this.

Ddog has cost us an extra chunk this month - rabies shot and dog-valium for fireworks night. Which runs from approximately 28th October to 10 November round here. So that was an extra £97 out of the joint account this month, plus an additional £90 for DS for some sports equipment and subs.

Managed to complete one of those real PITA jobs today, and get myself set up on the academic platform for the course I'm doing. Had to call the IT Crowd as the account set up just wasn't working, and ask the nice engineer to take over my computer to sort me out.

Have decided, perhaps a bit rashly, that I will paint the dining room before Christmas. It's long overdue, and it will be nice to have a decorated room to host some big celebratory meals. Doing the work myself will mean the only outlay is paint, so I have dug out my samples and will start getting some trial patches up on the walls and ceiling tomorrow. Usually I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but this time I"m going to try more of a 'let's see what we can get away with' approach, just to get the job done.

AdoraBell · 18/10/2022 18:13

NSD

Gensola · 18/10/2022 18:16

I submitted my masters thesis - have been doing a PT masters in higher education so like a PGCE but for teaching in university. Such a relief! I really hope I pass 🫣 won’t find out for 8 weeks.
work event this eve and tomorrow but then quiet Thursday. Looking forward to a night in PJs on the sofa tbh. Haven’t been spending much as have been flat out, am channelling my spends to selling on Vinted then spending the money I make. It’s working well!

Timetoswitch · 18/10/2022 19:19

Well done gen on getting your thesis submitted!

Our frugal saving this week is our Amazon prime has ended. Two days in and we have not yet resubscribed. If there’s a deal on Black Friday, I doubt we will resist though.

I think I’ve had two NSDs.

Laska2Meryls · 18/10/2022 19:33

Congratulations @Gensola ...Well done! You must be so relieved... I remember that feeling so well . Its a big day.. and I am sure that you will ace it !
Hope you have something celebratory in a glass at your work event this evening .. if not definitely do on Thursday..

kessiebird · 18/10/2022 19:33

Ah brilliant Gen well done and must feel good!

Bigskies great you got your IT sorted, DD just announced she's managed to remove all Google classrooms from her tablet. Great 🙄I'll be onto school IT if I can't work it out tonight...

Hope all the washing dried that was out. Mines finishing off on the radiators during the hour boost. It got quite cool here today

Two days to pay day, three days to holiday. Had to really dig deep in the freezer and cupboards today - chicken stir fry and noodles, hot dogs and chips for teenage DS and friend and pasta for DD and her friend. Plus a banana and choc chip loaf for snacks and breakfast tomorrow. Went a little squishy but still tasty.

kessiebird · 18/10/2022 19:35

Meant to say managed a NSD and had a good run at lunchtime.

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 18/10/2022 19:52

Congrats Gen . It must feel brilliant to be finished. Enjoy your mental freedom!

After painting my sitting room I said ‘never again’ Big. But now the memory of the pain has faded I am looking at my tatty bedroom 🤔. Built-in wardrobes and loads of woodwork though <shudder> , I must get real!

Was in the office today, so tube fares. Plus a coffee and a breakfast egg mayo and tomato baguette from Pret £6.10, as I left home at 6am and was so hungry! Took lunch in from home. Raced back for a short school governors’ meeting after work, and now home and about to make turkey and apricot burgers.

New cooker arrives tomorrow! I am so excited. I will make something nice on Thursday night to take into school on Friday. (This is why my grocery bill stays high, I am a feeder by nature 😉)

Bake-off tonight, yay!
