To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

Northwest here. Bedroom window still open but might get closed based on the false widow spider thread if any of the posters like in the NW.

I've just bought some heated blanket throws from wowcher. £42 with postage. I had some wowcher credit that needed using so we have one each and one for the two dogs to share.

I'm going to look at these when they turn up will you let me know if they are any good?

I think it's a really cold September

It’s actually been warmer than average.

I think people think it’s colder this year because they’re paying more attention to the weather/heating situation.

Cynderella · 01/10/2022 13:42

East - would love to have heating on at least first thing and early evening, but am managing without. Ridiculous number of layers and evenings in oodie. have turned on heated throw a couple of times and will use electric blanket soon.

Have hardly noticed cold today because have been in front of house which gets the sun, and I've been busy. Mon-Fri, I'm sitting all day at back of the house. Would like to last until half term.

Have managed to dry all washing outside with planning around the weather - helps working from home. Have had to use airer to finish drying some things overnight, but no tumble drying.

Our Sept elec use is down 37% and gas down 10% on what we used in August.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/10/2022 13:53

It's really not cold today. I've been at the allotment in the sunshine and it's very pleasant out there (other than the two non-forecast heavy showers!).

We've had a few colder days this last week due to the heavy rain, but September was a nice month generally.

I think you're right.
To be fair I think I was thinking of the last week actually when I said this!

@womaninatightspot

Yes I will. They made me pay the postage for each blanket. £5.99 was the cheapest option so they will be here in a week.

mum2jakie · 02/10/2022 16:20

Last couple of days have thankfully been quite mild and sunny. Managed to get through all the laundry including bedding and get it all out on the line to dry. Hoping this type of weather will last for a while

BiddyPop · 02/10/2022 18:23

Yes, it's been warmer over the weekend than it was during the week. Our thermostat is set to come on when temp indoors dips below 16.5, and it hadn't quite done that yet.

The heating in the office is due to be turned on tomorrow - it was very cold there this past week! People wearing outdoor coats and scarves indoors (I had my thermal base layer but did have a cardigan under my suit jacket as well).

xogossipgirlxo · 03/10/2022 11:26

We put our heating on for 30 min-1 hr a day. On Saturday we didn't switch it on at all. Yesterday for 30 min in the evening only because hubby was cold (came back from work tired). Mornings can be cold, below my comfort levels (18 degrees), but no point putting the heating on then, shower and getting ready warms me up. Hoping for warm October.

ifonly4 · 03/10/2022 14:46

It's a bit nippy first thing in the morning (around 16-17c) but the house warms up to around 18-20c in the day. Currently 18.7c and I'm sat here in just a tshirt. Once it gets to the stage it doesn't warm up at all, I'll put the heating on, although it'll only be set to just under 18.5c.

We normally put heating on early October, but glad we can drag it out a few more days without feeling too cold.

DD is in a lovely flat in Scotland - it's got high ceilings and old sash windows - they have put the heating on yet, but she's wearing a dressing gown or oodie over her clothes in the day.

womaninatightspot · 03/10/2022 17:10

Chilly in the morning here but have managed to pay for the oil to be delivered in the next 10 days will keep going with just the fires for as long as possible but you need a quick blast of central heating in the winter I think. Now to pay to have boiler serviced.

Dh had to turn the gas on for an hour last night as water was still cold (very little sun today and I'd focussed on laundry before the rain due today so that took the power generated in the roof).

limitededitionbarbie · 07/10/2022 20:08

@womaninatightspot the throws came today.

Not opened mine nor my Dd one yet but it's the exact same one I have bought for my dogs. I ordered three of the same from
Wowcher.

I'm happy with it. I have the same one upstairs with no plug as the younger dog chewed it off. They have been on/in the blanket all day. I've felt it and it feels pretty toasty to me.

All in all I think the they are good value. I'd buy them again as I haven't found the same any cheaper.

The blanket itself is fairly thin. I'm
Not bothered as I have had the exact same one before and paid the same price as I did this time about three or four years ago.

Hope that helps. If you want pics let me know.

Cynderella · 07/10/2022 22:55

I'm going to recommend an Oodie - yes, I know they're fugly. I dithered for a while, but I can't wear it for the whole evening because it's just too warm.

Thanks for that; I think I'm going to buy it. I've also splurged on some Turtle doves (seconds off ebay) wrist warmers so should be super cosy. Just need some big bum covering jumpers off ebay.

I put mine on last night... lasted less than half an hour as it's just too bulky & uncomfortable!

Had it for a year & can count on one hand how many times I've worn it. Seriously considering selling the damn thing.

Oh! I was hoping it'll come into its own when it gets a bit colder. I don't find it bulky - I find it comfortable, but I only wear it when I'm on the sofa watching TV. I wouldn't want to wear it for cooking or washing up.

I have worn it in the evenings this week and last - but not the whole evening!

JenniferWooley · 08/10/2022 05:14

@Cynderella I'm just a bit weird (I'm not even wearing a coat yet & the outside temp is down to 8/9° when I leave for work) the DC all love theirs & DD2 practically lives in hers even during the summer months.

I do have the most hideous shawl that you've ever seen though that I inherited from my gran probably because no one else wanted it & I wear that a lot.

OhMerde · 08/10/2022 07:50

I'm not cold yet either and the temp has dropped here (cheshire). Still around 15 ish in the daytime though. I've had the heating on twice so far. Had a friend stay over, so I put it on for half an hour to take the chill off. Cost £1 for that half hour 😫

JenniferWooley · 08/10/2022 09:01

I have condensation on the inside of the windows this morning & a runny nose so might need to stick heating on for an hour!

fortheloveofflowers · 08/10/2022 09:10

£1 for an hour 😵‍💫. I really hope this winter is mild but I’ve got a feeling it won’t be.

Ive heard two predictions for the Winter weather this week. Both said it was predicted to be a mild one. 🤞

Nope....it cost me £1 for half an hour. Even more shocking.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/10/2022 11:48

About £1.40 per hour here @ 6.4p/kWh.

I've got a hive system so I know exactly how long the boiler was on for as opposed to how long I set the thermostat to be on for, so that's fairly accurate.
