To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

DS is home ill from nursery with a nasty cough so I'm going to have to put the heating on today I think, he won't sit still under a blanket to keep warm.

Mylittlesandwich · 27/09/2022 08:12

It's chilly here this morning but it's only September so I can't justify the cost of having the heating on. We are really going to struggle with winter fuel bills this year. We both work but we don't have a high income. When it gets too cold I will have to put the heating on in the evenings. I have a DS who is almost 3. I'll be working from home all winter and like last year the heating will never go on during the day when I'm home on my own.

It cost me 30p for 10 minutes heating yesterday!..new boiler as well!

So 1.80 an hour jeez

GasPanic · 27/09/2022 10:02

I'm watching the weather. In my area there is a bit of a dip in temperature today (12 degrees max), then it gradually rises to a max of 17 degrees but stays above 15 degrees till October the 10th. So today offers the biggest "no heating" challenge for the next two weeks. If I can tough out today then the next 14 should be no issue.

The way I see it every time I don't turn the heating on now is a day I can have it on more when I really need it in Dec/Jan.

Today doesn't feel that bad so far, so I am pretty confident in lasting the whole of october without heating.

Nowheretoogo · 27/09/2022 10:07

That was from the start, house was 13 degrees,I wanted 19 but i switched it off before.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2022 10:13

This is what i was trying to work out how much heating costs as don’t have a smart meter

and the meter shows as say 8 units used for last month using no heating just hot water but that 254.0 kWh @ 6.9700 p/ so using £17.70

and over summer have been 8 or 9 a month

so not sure how to work out what a unit is in kWh.

assuming 31.85khw (254/8) is a unit ? So a unit is 2.2p

does that sound right

Rapidtango · 27/09/2022 10:20

We were chilly yesterday (NE England) - about 11 degrees, windy and miserable. We had the wood burner on for a couple of hours in the evening. It's about 3 degrees warmer today and supposed to be similar or higher for the next couple of weeks so we'll not have to have heating on again for a little while, thankfully.

There is a variable part in the calculation but on my last bill a unit works out as 11.2kwh. So if a kwh was 10p then a unit about £1.12.

Duh. Of course

as if 8 units is £17 ish then a unit would be £2.20

GasPanic · 27/09/2022 10:49

@Blondeshavemorefun

Gas meters are usually in either cubic feet (old) or cubic metres (modern)

1 metre cubed of gas is 35 cubic feet.

There are approximately 10.5 kwh in 1metre cubed of gas.

Gas boilers come in a range of sizes. 20kw, 25kw and 30kw seem pretty standard. If your house is small it will likely be 20kw but you can find out by checking the boiler model.

In theory an x kw boiler will use x kwh for every hour it is switched on. In practice it can be less than this as some boilers are soft start (do not run up to max power immediately).

It's important to remember that when you turn your hot water on for 1 hour with a 24 kw system boiler (not combi boiler), it does not necessarily mean you will use 24 kwh. the reason for this is that the hot water tank is thermostated, so the water will heat up to the requested temperature and then the boiler will stop running.

It won't bother me, I grew up on a freezing farm.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2022 11:48

Thanks @GasPanic

it was 9* outside this am at 7am. Freezing

JenniferWooley · 28/09/2022 07:04

It's currently 6° outside & I was feeling the cold last night at bedtime.

I won't put heating on in morning when I'm office based though as I'll just be getting up, getting ready & heading out to work so no point. Not sure about WFH days though as I can't cope with multiple layers but also hate wearing anything bulky.

I suppose the deciding factor on continuing to WFH will be if it's cheaper to use fuel to get to the office or run the heating at home.

Wafflefudge · 28/09/2022 07:25

I haven't yet.
Surprised at how cheap gas sounds in comparison with oil and they are only giving 100 to oil homes even though its more than doubled in price and still no clue when or how we will get it.
Don't know what temp it is in the house but was 15 outside yesterday and got chilly enough for a blanket on the sofa last night.
Transport into work costs me more than heating I think and uses up an hour so not worthwhile for me.

Ugh I know I also have an oil boiler and it's currently 96p a litre to refill that's 1K pretty much and normally I'd of done it in the summer and then a second fill after christmas. I haven't this year, I was hoping for more than £100 "comparable to the help given gas /electric users" it is not. Honestly be using wood stoves a lot this year.

Brigade always sounds so sneery

anyway we live in the balmy south and don’t ever put the heating on before October. It’s not cold yet. We’ll put it on when the kids turn blue and the house gets damp

i WFH all last winter and didn’t have it on during the day at all, but it was a mild winter. And being part of a brigade warmed my cockles from the inside I guess.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2022 08:06

Ditto @JenniferWooley 6* here at 7am. It’s dropping rapidly

mum2jakie · 30/09/2022 22:36

I had pledged to not have the heating on until October but cracked a day early as it's absolutely bloody freezing today!!

purpleme12 · 30/09/2022 22:38

I think it's a really cold September

Geewhizzr · 01/10/2022 00:31

Not got ours on yet. Am in a fleece onsie w dressing gown on top. Hoever , we have house guests from tomorrow.. feels rude not to put heating on so its nice for them

Wd feel.bad not doing so ..

HighlandPony · 01/10/2022 00:35

Forever!!! I’m Scottish. Grew up between the north east and Shetland for the holidays so I’m naturally drawn to the cold. Unless it gets to wim hof territory I’m peachy. I’m still in flip flops and 3/4 leggings but I’m ten weeks post partum so still fat as a seal.

Tereseta · 01/10/2022 00:37

North west here with no heating installed in our house. Still have the bedroom windows open here but hope the neighbours either side keep their heating on!

Iknowforsure1 · 01/10/2022 00:57

I don’t know, I feel zero need to. London, I sleep with open windows.

Well 9 degrees off “freezing” really 😂

Northwest here. Bedroom window still open but might get closed based on the false widow spider thread if any of the posters like in the NW.

I've just bought some heated blanket throws from wowcher. £42 with postage. I had some wowcher credit that needed using so we have one each and one for the two dogs to share.
