To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

That's much less than last year when we had the boiler flow running at full pelt.

gogohmm · 08/10/2022 11:59

Still not cold enough to need it here. Sitting with balcony doors open as too warm with them closed. Temperature is still 17 outside and house is 20 with no heating.

New houses rock!!!

RelativePitch · 08/10/2022 13:16

Still resisting here in the West Midlands! The coldest rooms in the house have gone down to 15°c at night, but the others are around 17. The day time can still reach 20. I've discovered that jumpers and layering up really works! I must have known that as a child of the 70s/80s, but forgot it along the way.

September was colder than normal in the last 2 weeks according to Met Office.

Yes I think this got people panicking 🤣

MarshaBradyo · 08/10/2022 14:39

We have used it in the morning a few times, we just got a bill showing our usage is lower than this time last year

Talia99 · 09/10/2022 16:58

My flat dipped below 18 by the thermostat for the first time today (17.5) before going back up to 18 by lunchtime. It’s at least a degree colder in the living room but with an oodie and thermal blanket (from heatholders.net), I’m actually not cold. I haven’t even had to use the heated throw yet.

It’s surprised me. Previous years, I’ve had the heating set at 23 (the thermostat is the other side of a thin wall to the radiator pipes so that’s more like 20 or 21 degrees in the house - the thermometer is only accurate when the heating is off) and it would have been on since early September. I was expecting to have to bear the cold but I actually mostly don’t feel cold at all.

I do regularly run a dehumidifier when I shower which throws out some heat and yesterday I had the oven on for an hour and left it open when I finished plus heating the kettle periodically but other than that, the heating is still turned off.

A tip for anyone who is cold at night is a feather duvet plus a top sheet. I find unlike a normal duvet, the feathers shape themselves to my body so no draughts from the top and the sheet means no draughts from the side.

AsterixInEngland · 09/10/2022 17:03

I use a duvet one size bigger (so king size for a double bed) to avoid droughts.

InterestQ · 09/10/2022 17:20

My bedroom was 13 degrees this morning! Big fluffy dressing gowns all round. I did light the fire in the morning as a concession but the heating is not going on.

Our house was built on 2005. It has fab insulation and decent windows. No heating yet.

Same. On some am for 30m and maybe same in evening to warm up dd bedroom

our bill says using less then last year

by one kWh a day so 30 a month for gas

Yoyo2021 · 09/10/2022 21:40

Won’t put heating on here until mid November I imagine. Been a cold one today but soon warmed up with thermal socks, blankets and a extra layer.

OhmygodDont · 09/10/2022 21:55

Was a frost outside this morning and we got down to 19.5c. Our downstairs is pretty much open plan but the windows and patio doors are little radiators once the sun hits them. Also our actual radiators when on are not under the windows, I wonder if that will help or not.

greenhouse recorded a low of 4.5c internally.

Cynderella · 09/10/2022 22:26

Still resisting - like PP, I'm not really cold. I've always layered up in the winter, but this year, I've invested in some serious layers and an Oodie and haven't felt cold. Have managed to get all washing dry outside. We've used more energy this week which is disappointing, but it would be much more with heating and the tumble dryer.

JenniferWooley · 10/10/2022 00:06

My bill has been issued earlier & earlier in the month for the past 6 months so I expected the latest bill in around 28-29th September following their pattern but it hasn't arrived yet Hmm my app shows my usage for September has been about the same as July/August though.

A high of 12°C expected here tomorrow, thankfully I'll be in the office with the heating on full but jeez it's cold if I wake up through the night with outside temperature down to 7° 🥶

I'm in an upstairs flat but downstairs neighbour never seems to have heating on (not a recent thing been like that the 6 years I've lived here) so I don't even get the benefit of that.

I just have my own duvet and wrap it around me, tucked under my legs and my arms so no draughts and no risk of it being pulled off me by OH rolling over. When its winter I have another one on top.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 12/10/2022 08:47

My 800L of oil is being delivered today so I can pop the heating on for a bit; so excited. I have been using woodstove and one of the dtd isn't feeling well so an oil radiator in her room last two nights. So haven't been completely without heating. It is cold here though forecast to be 1 degree tonight!

I was thinking about buying some electric blankets (for mattresses not heated throws) all the ones on Amazon seem really expensive anyone have a cheap link?

purpleme12 · 12/10/2022 08:57

It was 12 degrees in the bedroom when I woke up this morning.
But I'm never cold in bed

Whyisitdarkalready · 12/10/2022 12:19

This morning at 7.30am my smart meter was reading £2.40 spent: this was standing charge, one 5 minute shower and heating on for 40 minutes. Shocking! So many people are going to be freezing this winter because of this ridiculous cost.

I did look at my flow temperature on the boiler and my central heating was set at 60 degrees. Octopus recommended 50 so I've turned it down, hoping that it'll reduce the cost a little bit.

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2022 13:29

I’m staying with my dd1 who has gone to work in the office & No heating on , the thermostat is reading 19degrees as room temperature. I’m up in the north east.

it’s not really cold enough yet to turn on heating.

arent public buildings being restricted to 19 degrees, so as to save both fuel & resources

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2022 13:31

Whyisitdarkalready How many radiators do you have turned on? If you can turn off 3 radiators at the actual rad - this will save you money but you’ll still get 40 minutes of heating first thing in the morning

mickandrorty · 13/10/2022 06:52

I turned mine on for a bit yesterday just to make sure it was still working but aside from that its not been on yet this year, my thermostat is turned off and we will just hang it out as long as we can now. It just feels so miserable!

JenniferWooley · 13/10/2022 07:16

It's 3°c here this morning & I had ice on my windscreen!

I currently have a courtesy car which isn't as high spec as mine so no heated seats & takes ages to heat up making the journey to work miserable.

Might need heating on a bit tomorrow when I'm working from home.

ivykaty44 · 13/10/2022 08:59

It was dank here, but still got heating off & wearing fleece. It’s 19.5 degrees inside the house

GasPanic · 13/10/2022 10:03

Part of the no heating brigade here.

It's been 15-17 degrees C in the day here for what seems like ages. Going forwards the weather looks to be set until the 21st Oct. After that it seems to drop by 3 degrees C, so maybe that is the time to switch some heating on.

15 degrees outside = about 18 degrees inside in my house. Two pairs of socks being worn and that's it.
