To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

I'm in East Sussex, I live in a detached bungalow that has cavity wall insulation (apparently) it is freezing. Its always been freezing. I extended into the loft, the loft is too bloody hot with the heating on.

My gas usage is around 12000kw per year. I have no idea why it is so huge for 1 adult and 1 child and this is with the heating on for only a few hours a day from November until end of March normally. Heating on really low upstairs too.

I'm seeing others with bills of 7000kw, I jsut don't know what I'm doing wrong :(

Sounds like us @fortheloveofflowers

tho kent and semi

when cold house if cold

when sunny house is hot

it keeps the temp it is if that makes sense

used to have heating on hour am. Few hours evening and if 14 would click on at night

but seem to have higher bills then the average

You both mention 14 degrees, I'm guessing this is outside from your post, but what temperature is it in the house?
Just interested

About the same feels warmer outside in the sun. Stone built cottage.

I do think I am more used to the cold.

We don't have gas so no central heating (no source of heat at all in our bedroom).

The idea of a permanent 22 degrees is never going to happen. In the winter we have a wood burner but only in one room.

So just now it feels comfortable. Has been a good sunny day here today

MinervaTerrathorn · 23/09/2022 17:36

I think I'm more used to a range of temperatures due to living overseas without heating or air conditioning. It was warmer than here but it could get to single digits inside in the winter. So central heating set to 16 feels fine to me.

Natsku · 23/09/2022 18:17

I feel freezing when the room thermometer shows 18 or 19! I'm too used to warm Finnish houses, we never used to let the temperature drop below 21. Had the heating on for a couple of hours today while the solar panels were generating and it feels so much more comfortable now at 20 degrees.

Azzy111 · 23/09/2022 22:47

I wish I could manage without the heating this year. I would have. But I can’t now cuz I’ve got a baby on the way. 39 weeks pregnant today 🤣

Meili04 · 26/09/2022 00:46

Live in the north west . Given up been putting the heating on for a couple of hours. I can't stand the cold anyway my dad never used to turn the heating on when I was a child and I always felt freezing talking getting ready under the covers. I could see my breath. Today I've worn a camisole , long sleeve top and thick dressing gown , jogging bottoms and socks. My hands feel cold so had to put it on. I think I need to move abroad 🤣🤣🤣. I can't face needing to put gloves on in the house

Zippedydoo123 · 26/09/2022 07:40

We have a warm insulated home but I did turn my heating on yesterday twice for half an hour each time and up to 16C. It doesn't take long to heat up nicely and I pay a fixed gas bill of £22 a month (new double glazing last year and only 6 radiators in use).

Grumpybutfunny · 26/09/2022 09:34

We've been using it for maybe 2hours per day and putting all the washing on the heated towel rails. So far gas bill without the standing charge is only £23 for the month including a gas hob and unlimited hot water

purpleme12 · 26/09/2022 09:35

What how are the last 2 people's bills so low!
What temperature is it in your house?

Whiskers4 · 26/09/2022 10:07

The figure of £23 doesn't include standing charge and is for a summer month meaning no heating, less cooking, so that's why it's not a large amount. Fast forward to January, including standing charge, they'll probably be paying £100+ a month.

Zippedydoo123 · 26/09/2022 11:28

We used to pay £29 gas a month but it was reduced when the fixed was renewable this May as summer 2021 we had our new double glazing plus I consciously used a lot less last winter. According to my smart meter last winter it was never more than £30 or £40 a month. Cavity wall and lift insulation and a fairly modern house (1970s). The electricity is on a variable and is much higher though as we have electric showers... despite our air fryer we seem to consume a lot of electricity.

Cheeselog · 26/09/2022 12:09

I live in Berkshire. It only turns properly cold for approximately 3 days a year.

I've been paying £48 a month for both for several years now. I'm with Bulb currently. I'm really tight and hate spending money, so I'm super careful with gas and electric use. It helps massively to be a woman of a certain age though! I'm rarely cold and have my own internal heat generator. I used to wait to get out of bed until a hot flush came along and then I couldn't feel if it was stone cold in the house!

I can understand this slightly more though. Mine used to be this amount (before the price hikes) but the amount mentioned in the posts I was referring to was half this amount

coodawoodashooda · 26/09/2022 20:57

I would normally have the heating on now and am managing without. Only just though.

womaninatightspot · 26/09/2022 21:07

I think I'd proably have the heating on just now. It's really chilly out with an icy wind ( I'm in ye olde farmhouse so draughts) I've lit the woodstove and the kids are wearing onesies to bed.

North Yorkshire coast here and I succumbdthis evening

IncessantNameChanger · 26/09/2022 22:21

I refuse to cave! I have ordered three room thermometers to see how cold I can tolerate 🤣

knickersniff · 27/09/2022 00:08

Not on here down in Essex but that's pretty normal for this time of year . Kids are complaining about coming down for breakfast that they feel cold but they refuse to put on dressing gowns so tonight I've put fleece blankets over their breakfast chairs for them to use in the morn .
Also today I've bought ..... homebargins 2ft long hot water bottles for their beds . £7.99 each . They are amazing.

I’ve not turned the heating on in maybe 18 months. It can be cold but hot water bottles, blankets and oodies are my best friend. I begrudge paying for it.

i’m in Scotland, in the most freezing nights I sleep in an oodie. I sleep on top of a duvet and beneath a duvet (two in total). Blankets on the couch etc, it’s fine. I can’t sleep in socks due to sensory issues but imagine that would add some heat.

when I use the oven I leave the kitchen door open and it heats it up nicely.

I grew up in Yorkshire, with heating but know plenty who didn’t believe in it. I’ve joined that brigade 🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2022 03:33

Heating on here. 30m am and hour or so late afternoon /evening

was pouring with rain. Cold wet and have a child and a dh who works outside

that Warmed house nicely

gas bill was 17 and £8.30 sc for guessing hot water and been roughly that over summer months

so will be interesting to see what using 1-2hrs a day if need be for next 2w till gas bill comes in will cost

Nowheretoogo · 27/09/2022 07:45

It cost me 30p for 10 minutes heating yesterday!..new boiler as well!

ivykaty44 · 27/09/2022 07:48

Was that 10 minutes at the start of heating up? Or was the room up to temperature already & what temperature were you trying to achieve?
