The “how much does this cost to run” thread?

Based on posts about people thinking of using candles instead of electric lights - which is both dangerous and not likely to save any money, I’d like to set this thread up as a place where people can ask how much items in their house cost to run, to let posters make informed decisions about whether or not to keep using them after energy price rises.

If you want to ask, useful information to have is: the energy usage of the item - eg a heater might say on it that it’s 1000w. If you don’t know that the name/model number as accurately as possible. Also to give you a useful estimate it would be good to know your current gas/electricity price tariff price per unit. However it’s easy enough to work out at current and predicted price cap levels.

I can’t promise to answer everything so please can I call upon other numerate MNers to help out? I think this could be a real lifesaver.

Probably a petty one but...I've been using the mixed fibres, eco cycle at 30 degrees. But it only spins at 1200 on my machine. I can put them on to spin again at 1400. Other than saving time, would I be better off just using the eco cotton wash at 30 degrees instead? I feel just typing this out has made me realise how petty this is.

There's a podcast on BBC Sounds called "Sliced Bread". One of their most recent episodes included looking at different portable heaters to see which were the most efficient at heating you and the costs.

The upshot was that they actually all cost about the same - the ones that heat up the fastest burn more £ per hour and the oil heaters might cost less per hour but take longer to heat up to the desired temperature, so it all evens out. The advice was either to use your central heating which is more effective at heating a larger space, or, as is always talked about on here, heat the person not the space.

The other question there would be, if you used the eco cotton wash (which you can spin at 1400) would you still want to do a second spin?

I've been giving everything an extra spin, whether it's my 20' wash that I use for most things (only spins at 1200 too), or my 60' cottons that I use for towels etc (which spins at 1400, but also benefits from a second spin). I was washing the towels at 20 too, but they got a bit rank... 😂

I have an old de longhi oil filled radiator -would having this on then turned down to 20 degrees on its thermostat be cheaper than having the gas central heating on to heat a bedroom?

What's the wattage?

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 19/11/2022 18:04

I'll psych myself up to find it in the cellar-I can't remember as I last used it ages ago in another house !

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/11/2022 20:57

Thanks @NewBootsAndRanty

However, in most cases, the cheapest option would be to heat the room using your gas boiler and control with your thermostatic radiator valves. This is because gas is around three times cheaper than electricity per unit."

this stands out

I got a smart plug with energy tracking in sale few days ago and I can confirm thatwww.ikea.com/gb/en/p/taernaby-table-lamp-anthracite-20323891/
With
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/rollsbo-led-bulb-e14-200-lumen-dimmable-chandelier-brown-clear-glass-00517890/
Really does use 3w an hour so it would take 333 hours to cost me 29p (yup, i am on pre october price)
Tomorrow I check my hoover and air fryer 😁 And everything else......
I look forward to checking slowcooker in few weeks.

Not sure if this is still alive but many questions everywhere about air fryers.
I have the one above.
For air fry at 200C for preheat and 14min used 0.3kwh (2w were from something else previously)
So grand cost of around 11p on the newest tariffs.

Power jumped between 1670w and 50w throughout the cooking.

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/12/2022 11:22

It's 200w, so just under 7p/h going by a unit rate of 34p.

User129867588 · 02/12/2022 11:37

Thank you for your quick reply - seems reasonable enough to me!!

SamBeckettslastleap · 03/12/2022 17:39

Important help!

I've been very frugal but I need outsideXmas lights. How much do these cost please as I've been harassing DH about his wastage and he will be the first to ask!

@User129867588 which one is that please, I need another

The label says they're 5 watts. If your ele rate is 34p/kwh, it's 0.17p an hour to run.

I think Hmm

They are 5 watt max, I have just set ours up today, 3 sets, all 3 say 5W but actually draw less, about 10 Watts in total.

So I could have them on 100 hours and use 34p of electricity. I am not even going to bother switching them off at bedtime it is so cheap, it will give the Christmas drunks a smile.

Yes to the poster above, 0.17p an hour.

Its this one. Not received yet though but good reviews
Dehumidifier

SamBeckettslastleap · 03/12/2022 19:39

Thank you. That's why I love this thread, seems so frivolous having outside lights but it isn't. I need to look at LED lights to replace my current lights.

Thanks @User129867588 I've ordered it. I've spent days looking at different ones and they all seem more or less the same I couldn't decide. Like that this one auto turns on and off when humidity rises.

User129867588 · 03/12/2022 20:58

@SamBeckettslastleap you’re welcome. Is it sad that I’m excited for mine to come now? 😂

It's 500W, so at full power 0.5kWh, assuming you pay 34p a unit, it will cost 17p an hour to run.

Thank you. I am rubbish with this 500w etx

I may invest in one

has our bill this am for nov /dec - £354

£6 a day for heating when had rads on for hr am and 2pm. That’s 3hrs a day roughly so 2ph heating

17p an hour sounds good !!

AtomicBlondeRose · 08/12/2022 13:18

However 500W of heating really isn’t very much - it will heat the direct area you are in but not much more. A standard plug in radiator/electric fire tends to be 1kw (1000W) on low and maybe 2kw (2000w) on high. 500W isn’t miraculously going to be hotter than that - that’s just science. So don’t expect miracles.
