The “how much does this cost to run” thread?

Based on posts about people thinking of using candles instead of electric lights - which is both dangerous and not likely to save any money, I’d like to set this thread up as a place where people can ask how much items in their house cost to run, to let posters make informed decisions about whether or not to keep using them after energy price rises.

If you want to ask, useful information to have is: the energy usage of the item - eg a heater might say on it that it’s 1000w. If you don’t know that the name/model number as accurately as possible. Also to give you a useful estimate it would be good to know your current gas/electricity price tariff price per unit. However it’s easy enough to work out at current and predicted price cap levels.

I can’t promise to answer everything so please can I call upon other numerate MNers to help out? I think this could be a real lifesaver.

Thank you for this useful thread

the heated dryer works way quicker if you buy the cover. Without it the clothes only dry where they contact the bars, with it I can dry a big wash of towels in a few hours without having to shift the clothes around every half hour or so.

Not sure where you get 0.95kw for the oven - ours is rated at 3.6kw! Obviously that’s the highest power draw (and it does have a self clean function) but I’d be surprised if it was as low as 0.95 for a typical 180degree use…

Very illuminating about the American style fridge, reckon we must be spending loads on this… ours is over 10 years old so likely to be v inefficient, but would cost a load to E place and even new ones don’t look efficient!

I am sure if you keep her in a good nick she will be ok. Yes, they eat more but I wouldn't get rid of mine ever. I would still need extra freezer if I had normal sized fridge with the way I cook and store some things. Butyes, unlike TV for example, she is hungry

Unless i misread? Happy to be corrected

Laundry: my 6kg Bush washer (model WMSAE612W) uses about 0.5kwh for an eco cycle (not sure about the non eco cycles).

alwaysmovingforwards · 24/08/2022 22:26

Well I've just learnt than hoovering up costs about 42p!

I wonder if it's worth getting a manual carpet sweeper?

I’ve seen lots of people saying about using an air fryer rather than the oven. Are they that much cheaper? Does it offset the cost of buying one?

My oven is 1.1kw. A Ninja Foodi Max air fryer is 1.7kw, some of the other models are 2.4kw. So the air fryer uses significantly more electric than the oven.

So that shows a power rating of 2.8 where mine shows 3.6…so not sure what it then means by the energy consumption of 0.86 that it shows elsewhere!!!

mines similar to this one

www.siemens-home.bsh-group.com/uk/productlist/cooking-and-baking/ovens/built-in-ovens/HB678GBS6B#/Togglebox=accessories/Togglebox=manuals/Togglebox=accessoriesOthers/

Connection rating of 3.6 kw but then talks about 0.87kwh per cycle???

it’s all done to confuse! I want something that says “an hour at 180 will use ????kwh”

Bubblebubblebah · 24/08/2022 23:07

I always thought that's the type of socket. Some machines need special sockets (usually industrial sized appliances).

Great thread as I’ve been wondering how much my 3 hour wash cycles cost V shorter ones.
i also don’t know how to reduce our boiler costs as we heat so much hot water yet only use a little? Is it better to put it on once a day than twice I wonder - I wanted to reduce the temperature too but haven’t managed

ChickpeaFlour · 24/08/2022 23:31

The 42p cost of hoovering will encourage me not to bother 😄

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2022 23:34

Ok - a kettle. Chose one at random from Curry’s. This is 3000w so uses 3kwh. At current prices that’s 84p an hour - but a kettle isn’t on for an hour. Say 3 minutes.

Current prices: 4.2p to boil a full kettle
October prices: 7.8p

Would a stove top kettle on a gas hob be cheaper?

ToppCat · 24/08/2022 23:38

Thanks very much for this thread. It’s the first time I’ve really understood how to work out how much things cost to run.

I was wondering this too. It might not be as efficient, but gas is so much cheaper than electric.

Jellybean23 · 24/08/2022 23:55

This link might be useful. The table of costs is based on 25pence per kWh so double it for 50pence per kWh

AllLopsided · 25/08/2022 00:06

Ooh thanks for this thread!

I have a tricky one (beyond me anyway). I've always wondered this!

Our 10-year-old Delonghi bathroom heater is not attached to our gas CH - it's electric. It's a tall radiator/towel rail with a fan heater at the bottom. It's about 1.6m high and 60cm wide. It has 14 horizontal bars, each about 5cm high. There are gaps to hang towels. On the bottom (knee height) is a fan heater. On the side it says 1700w 50Hz and the serial number is (maybe) 20520.

My question is, how much does it cost to run the radiator in comparison to the fan heater? We would run the radiator for perhaps an hour or two, the fan heater for half an hour. We don't actually use it to dry towels, they go on the hall radiator which is included in the CH. But the bathroom is practically underground and bloody freezing and we have an Italian shower, so there's no way we'll be showing without heating when it's -10 outside!

DH uses it mostly, I often use the ensuite as it's warmer!

We are in France, where electricity is currently capped at a reasonable 4%.

Ffsjustltb · 25/08/2022 00:14

I worked out last year that boiling a kettle on a gas hob worked out at around half the price of using an electric kettle. That was allowing for hoe much longer it takes. Plus you get the added bonus of the gas hob warming up the kitchen. Just don't forget about it and expect it to switch itself off like I did..

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/08/2022 06:48

Kettle vs hob:

The medium burner on my gas hob uses 2kw - at current prices that’s 56p/hour to run or about 1p a minute. Against 4-ish pence to boil a full electric kettle. So depending on how long it takes your kettle to boil, it could be cheaper. But you don’t always boil a full kettle etc so it seems much of a muchness.

Vacuum cleaner (for @alwaysmovingforwards )

My Henry is 580w.

Current prices: 16.2p/hour
October prices: 30p/ hour

So unless you have a particularly power-hungry cleaner or hoover a lot 42p doesn’t sound right.

Not cost related so huge apologies and I'll get the post deleted if required but a tip re boiling the kettle, especially if there's folk about during the day in the house is pour any excess boiled water into a thermos flask after having boiled said kettle for the next cuppa, saving a bit of energy in not having to use it again.
