The “how much does this cost to run” thread?

Based on posts about people thinking of using candles instead of electric lights - which is both dangerous and not likely to save any money, I’d like to set this thread up as a place where people can ask how much items in their house cost to run, to let posters make informed decisions about whether or not to keep using them after energy price rises.

If you want to ask, useful information to have is: the energy usage of the item - eg a heater might say on it that it’s 1000w. If you don’t know that the name/model number as accurately as possible. Also to give you a useful estimate it would be good to know your current gas/electricity price tariff price per unit. However it’s easy enough to work out at current and predicted price cap levels.

I can’t promise to answer everything so please can I call upon other numerate MNers to help out? I think this could be a real lifesaver.

Someone asked on our local Fb does leaving it on a delay so washes at say 5am so ready to hang at 7am when wake up , Costs money . As machine is on and on delays for 8/10hrs

What do you think is using the energy when it's waiting?

I didn’t think it did

but she said her machine was on so therefore using 8/10hrs power

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/09/2022 07:34

Well, it can’t be! Any appliance can’t just “use” electricity - it has to be turned into something be that light, sound, heat/cooling or movement (or computing power but unless you’re running a supercomputer this is negligible and certainly not applicable to a washing machine). When a machine is doing none of those things it’s not using any electricity!

It would be using a tiny bit of power to maintain the timer.

It's probably just drawing in like something on standby so penny a night.

Thanks @CaveMum

Already on excel trip😂

I will still prepay before October. I am simply using the cap prices because I live in EDF zone where there is never a price a penny below🙄

If anyone see isue in my excel math, shout pls (note, totals are in £ not p)

That's better than I had expected .

SamBeckettslastleap · 13/09/2022 08:53

Don't shoot me, but is that too much of a discount?
I know the Queen's passing has meant that there is a pause on the COL discussion (although no pause in the increase of Supermarket prices, Aldi had a marked increase again yesterday) but we need to all be careful with energy usage and now it seems temporarily affordable will people be as cautious?

This is why I'd rather a lower price on essential energy, and a higher price on excess although I appreciate this isn't an easy fix.

Perhaps they should credit people whon use less energy this winter, an incentive to cut usage.

(Obviously not talking about the millions that have had to watch their energy use for years)

Bubblebubblebah · 13/09/2022 09:17

It is still above what my family in another coutry pays, but their wages are like half so...

The thing with essential vs non essential energy is that it is so individual, it probably wouldn't be possible to administer.

You are right Bubble I guess I'm fearful that these higher prices are coming and the government can not afford to make up the difference long term.

The cost of not switching a freestanding electric cooker off at the wall? We always keep the switch on as it's useful to have the clock function in our open plan kitchen/living room. I'm debating whether to start switching it off at the wall but DH doesn't want to as he says it won't save a lot and it's a PITA to keep resetting the clock everytime?

Thanks in advance!

Almost nothing. I left our microwave with a clock plugged in for 24 hours and it didn't even measure a fraction of a single Watt.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/09/2022 15:04

Replacement fridge freezer arrived yesterday....

  1. yep, definite impact on useage
  2. I'm no longer worried about my insulin freezing or overheating.

Thanks for this thread @AtomicBlondeRose - I'm not sure I'd have picked up on the problem without it.

I don't think it would cause any big difference.

Thank you, probably leave it plugged in then :)

I've tried googling but can't find an easy way to calculate my fridge freezer's annual cost. I rang bosch who advised it uses 438kwh annually. It is very old.
Can anyone help please?

At my current variable rate (27.35p/kwh) it's £120..using the upcoming October price cap rates (34p/kwh), that's just under £150.

^ that's assuming it's running efficiently etc.

If not, it may well use more.

If it uses what the manufacturer says, then just over 130 quid a year at 30p per kWh.

rumred · 15/09/2022 14:29

Thanks @Nolongera
So it's the unit cost multiplied by the consumption.
That's useful. Now need to consider if it's worth replacing with a new more efficient one

cakeorwine · 15/09/2022 19:33

@Bubblebubblebah

I see your Excel and raise you Open Office

But you have lovely formatting

The 2nd graph has the effect of 25% reduction in gas and electricity usage from Jan 23. I built it in as a variable

Ah. I need to install open office again. My cheapo office365 subscription finished😂 I keep my notes of how much is on meter in calendar.

Very nice table!

I realised that mine is redundant because it will not be rates I will be given as it changes by area and these were apparently averages. So come at me EDF and fuck my county up as usual 🙄

Nolongera · 28/09/2022 21:13

Did a test on my big fridge freezer in the garage today, much cooler than in the summer,10C as opposed to 30C.

18p in 24 hours at the new prices.
