Gas usage

Can anyone help me unravel my gas readings?

Family have gone away for a few days so I’m home alone. When I wake I’ve already used 32p gas (midnight to 7am) during the day I shower & small bit of washing up, end of day total gas = 47p. Have clarified with Shell that this DOES NOT included my service charge or VAT.

What the hell happens at night that uses 68% of my gas charges - am presuming it must be the boiler having a party?

It will be your daily standing charge. The smart meter does include it.
Shell customer rep probably got confused as to “service charge” as that’s things like annual gas safety cert, maintaining or fixing your boiler.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 12/08/2022 09:55

Yep daily standing charge

Hugasauras · 12/08/2022 09:55

Gas standing charge is ~27p at the moment if you're on variable tariff so probably that yes.

Greentime101 · 12/08/2022 09:58

That is a concern that Shell staff are giving out completely incorrect information at a time like this? I will go back to them

What kind of boiler system do you have? Is it set to heat the water overnight/early morning?

Greentime101 · 12/08/2022 10:01

It’s a combi boiler approx 5 years old

Also gas readings update more slowly than electricity readings on smart meters.

15p is v cheap for water for a shower and hot water for washing up. A 10-min shower would be more like 30-40p at current rates I would think.

Greentime101 · 12/08/2022 10:17

I’m back waiting for Shell to clarify - yesterday I specifically asked when the meter ticks over at midnight do you add the 27p service charge & they said no - if that’s incorrect that is very poor

Annnnnd a completely different answer from Shell today - you were all correct!

Thank you

I think you may have confused them calling it a 'sevice charge', its the 'daily standing charge'.

Glad you got your answer though

Greentime101 · 12/08/2022 12:31

Ah I only made that mistake on this post! Not on my comms with Shell -😀

Shell reply from yesterday states “Standing charge is not included in your smart meter reading” which is 100% incorrect
