Saving on car Breakdown cover

We've always gone with rac or aa as I've bought into the idea that the service must be better but we haven't called them out in 9 years and the cover is £120!! I can get the same with a lesser known company for £58. Do you skimp on breakdown cover. What are peoples opinions?

I'm with Start Rescue, they have 4.6 rating on trust pilot. Last year everything bar European Cover cost me £25, its gone up to £40 this year think it's because the car is now over 5 years, I can't say how good they are as never had to use them. I found them initially via my Blue Light card discount.

I wouldn’t skimp on it. The time you desperately need it you might be glad you’d spent that much.

We get cover with our bank account. It often seems a good idea to save on insurance until you need it.

We need it as we have an old French car and have used it twice in the last 6m. We have a packaged account with breakdown cover (with AA) included with worldwide travel and mobile phone insurance and home emergency cover. It's not cheaper than what you've been quoted but its not a bad deal if we paid for all those things separately.

  • We didn't bother with breakdown cover with our previous brand new lease car though.

We have RAC, we use tesco clubcard points to pay for it each year.

Mine is through my bank account so I do it that way.

Another important thing when renewing insurance is to go through a cashback site. I just renewed pet insurance and got 70 pounds cashback.

I use quidco, this is a referral link and you get an extra 5 pounds when your first 5 pounds cashback is paid using it. You just start your search on quidco before you click through to comparison site or insurance provider for it to be tracked, that's it.

We didn't renew with AA this year because of the cost. Within 3 weeks of us cancelling the renewal, they had sent out an offer with a much reduced price. We have now renewed.

I am with rescue my car. my car is 17 years old and it cost me £46 for the year. I've had to call them out before and they were great. I insure the vehicle

I get AA through the bank , could you look at putting your income into a reward account (mine also covers travel insurance)
Once you've hit the amount transferred in (and I think 2 DD's) just transfer it back to your normal account (or maybe a 321 account)
However I would never not have cover with AA or RAC as I was once stuck in the side of the road at night and AA was amazing , with me in 20 mins ...
