Smart Meters

Are they worth the bother of setting this up?

Our bills have doubled already and I need to find ways to cut!

I don’t love the idea that my energy usage becomes available in real time to anyone but I’m probably being paranoid!

I won’t have one, but I do read my meters on the first of every month now.

Yeah a good idea to keep an eye on that.

Does anyone else have privacy reservations re a smart meter??

I just do monthly readings

I have one. Its great I learnt so much about our energy usage. Was really surprised that things like TV and computer actually cost quite a lot to run. I am planning to limit my son's tech use on the ground of cost. Wish me luck with that!

I choose not to have a smart meter. I read my meters on the first of every month and have tracked usage since we moved in 11 years ago.

I've managed to push usage down every year without having a smart meter. Anything compulsory worries me. It is seldom to benefit the consumer.

You could consider getting an internal energy monitor set up, eg an OWL... it has a clasp around the cable at the meter, which transmits to the display unit what you're using, but it doesn't transmit anything externally to the electricity company.

I have one and I prepay, My electric and gas has gone up but I'm spending considerably less than my colleagues that are on direct debits..

I love ours. It’s just one less thing to worry about. Who cares how much energy you use apart from you?! It’s just shared between you and the energy company as far as I know but couldn’t really care less. It doesn’t stop you using so much energy though, it just makes you more aware of it as your little home display shows every penny and kw you use in real time - so on that basis you can use less if you can!

To me it’s a no brainer. Smart meters give an accurate reading of what you are using and allow you to track so you can make weekly or daily changes to your usage.
you will only pay for what you use
