Foods that have shrunk … I will start

Wotsits - they are now half Wotsit in my view.

Soreen malt loaf - picked up one in Tescos for £1, put it next to the ones I already had from Lidl in the freezer - nearly half the size.

I know I’m late to the party but any others leaping out at people?

I swear Wagon Wheels were the size of my head when I was a child Grin

Oi pinhead! Don't start that again...

Although I must say that I can't understand how the 'West was Won' when they had to traverse North America on such piddly little wheels. Hmm

4 pack of Tesco 😳loo roll -couldn't work out why it was so easy to carry home tucked under my arm.Realised the rolls were so small only a garden gnome would use them and be satisfied.

starfishmummy · 02/07/2022 00:37

The chocolate on Magnums is definitely thinner

IDreamOfTheMoors · 02/07/2022 00:46

U.S. here. My helper drinks fizzy drinks so I keep them in stock for her.
They used to come in 20-packs — now they’re 18-packs but they cost the same.
Same with crisps. Party size (big) bags used to be quite large. Now they’re down to the regular size but they cost the same. And the regular size is tiny but costs the same.

And it’s offensive that they think we’re so stupid as to not notice.

AuntTwacky · 02/07/2022 01:03

Kit Kat chunky

No so chunky now

LadyVictoriaSponge · 02/07/2022 01:25

I’ve noticed this a lot on some of my regular purchases but as an avid calorie counter the calories quoted on the packets remain the same as before which is really annoying, less food but the same calories makes me feel doubly robbed.

I'm sure the jars of coffee I buy (Dowe Egberts) used to be 200g and now they appear to be 190g - a very subtle shrinkage but wouldn't take long for them to make quite a saving - price didn't go down of course!

Also DP noticed that the tiny little packs of lurpack butter you get in pubs etc. seem to have shrunk from 10g to 8g

I don't buy jaffacakes except for myself any more. We have 4 people in our family 12 divided up nicely to 3 each. Ten is a silly number :(

I bought the same coffee in Asda, a while ago it was £5 for 200g.
Then they shrunk it to 190g for £5.
In the past couple of months that 190g jar has gone from £5 to £5.90 and is currently £6.20.

McDonalds apple pie had shrunk by about 1/4 when I had one the other day.

Crap shrinks, so stop buying crap.

I seriously thought you must have meant "crab sticks".

I then re-read it and realised I've lost the plot!

Autienotnaughtie · 02/07/2022 02:02

Walkers crisps!! How can 1 third of a pack have so many calories!!

PeanutButterOnToad · 02/07/2022 13:01

tootiredtobother · 30/06/2022 18:22

small to medium sized (in my opinion) cauliflower in Morrisons, was ticketed as large, 99p flippin heck

Cauliflower here in Sydney last week $8.99 (so around £4.50)! Vegetables are crazy prices here.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 02/07/2022 14:56

I always imagined vegetables were cheap in Australia - don't know why. It's getting to it when a cauli costs the best part of a fiver. Did you buy it @PeanutButterOnToad ?

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 02/07/2022 15:26

It makes sense that lots of 'treat' food shrinks rather than the price going up. Producers must be worried that to pass on the full price rise would tip the price too high & people would just not buy.

The thing is all these price increases can be explained.

National insurance up, brexit & post covid labour shortages = labour costs up
Energy cost up = baked or fried anything is particularly hit

Fertiliser and animal feed up

Shipping costs 6x higher than in 2019!

Then lots of hits from the war - paper, wheat and rapeseed oil in particular.

And climate challenges starting to take effect - eg coffee and tea and lots of vegetables impacted by droughts / flooding / frost. More so than 'normal'.

EarthquakesinEastActon · 02/07/2022 15:31

Treat foods have been shrinking for ages, presumably to meet regulations on sugar etc.

I’ve found that my Nivea face wipes have suddenly started to come in packs of 20 rather than 25 for the same price.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 02/07/2022 16:29

I don't think shrinking the product helps against hfss laws. I think it's based on calories, sugar / fat / salt density. So smaller pack sizes don't help.

Might be wrong though

I’ve seen lots of chocolate bars and crisps announcing they are under 100 calories, so I assumed that was part of their goal. Could be wrong though.

Titsywoo · 02/07/2022 16:43

Mcdonalds. Their chips are definitely thinner and the hamburger patties are about half the thickness now.

Bibbetybobbity · 02/07/2022 16:47

Agree with PP in magnums. That used to be a ‘big’ icecream objectively, like if you chose it at the icecream van it felt like a proper treat and something extra. They’re tiny now, really dinky in comparison.

ribbonhair · 02/07/2022 16:55

Not sure if this has been done but loo roll! Doesn't last as long at all

ribbonhair · 02/07/2022 16:56

Oops loo roll isn't food is it...

Georgeskitchen · 02/07/2022 17:21

McVities digestive biscuits. They have changed the recipe as well and they taste really oily and craggy now.

Georgeskitchen · 02/07/2022 17:32

*claggy

LadyEloise1 · 02/07/2022 17:36

Purple Snacks. Not a patch on their former selves. Much less chocolate covering their much smaller size.

RuthW · 02/07/2022 18:30

Bought a pack of choc ices from tesco today. Same price but only 6 in the box instead of 10.

PeanutButterOnToad · 03/07/2022 03:07

@iwantmyownicecreamvan Yes, I bought it. DH and I had been away for a few days so I had promised family a Sunday roast and in our house cauliflower cheese is considered an integral part of one 😄The other vegetable was frozen green beans! Recent floods have ruined crops in Queensland where a lot of Australian produce is grown and we are having supply chain issues like the rest of the world. Mind you I have always found vegetables expensive here compared to England, even when you buy seasonally, on the other hand good meat has been cheaper.

PIITORNS · 03/07/2022 03:17

Another one for an article in the Mail in the next couple of days by any chance?! OP's writing style seems very familiar...
