So I heard they were good but discouraging new customers . We're with SSE. I'm going to start comparing prices but is now a really bad time to swop tariff? She I wait it out until April and see what's on offer?

We swapped from sse to octopus as octopus was so much cheaper but this was before all the fuel crisis stuff. So I’m not sure now!!

I go by whatever Martin Lewis says. Go on his site and see if it offers any advice.

If you want to switch to Octopus now, you have to ring and ask, you can no longer apply online.

They will accept new people if it would clearly be in your interests to switch - which basically means you have an EV and want to go onto their Go tariff. If you don’t have a compatible smart meter, you will have to go onto their variable price capped tariff and wait for a smart meter to be installed, or your SMETS 1 meter to be adopted. They probably won’t be able to give you a timescale on that.

The thing is, no energy provider wants new customers on the standard variable tariff, because they are losing money hand over fist on them. Apart from which, there is very little difference between providers on those tariffs, that’s kind of the point of them. Some put a bit more on the standing charge in return for a slightly lower unit price, some do it the other way round. But the difference is pretty small.

So if you are coming off a fixed rate, your existing supplier has to let you have the price cap rate, but no other supplier does. The only tariffs available at the moment which may be cheaper than the price cap are time of use tariffs. And that only works if you can shift your usage.

M&S energy are Octopus...

Realistically there will be no deals due to the energy crisis. People can fix but the price will be significantly above the current price cap.

I rang Octopus a couple of weeks ago and was told they weren’t taking any new customers on a SVT so their only options were fixed very high rate tariffs.

I'm not sure what is happening with new customers but here's a referral code if you or anyone else need it. It gives you and myself 50 off.
