ivykaty44 · 24/12/2021 21:06

anyone up for a no spend January?

just the normal utilities, food shopping and transport costs

then put the purse/wallet away and don't spend till February

a good way to rebalance the balance after xmas

No idea how I did this but I managed a NSD!

And my monthly nectar points are already on £6 (we have insurances with them too!) after we zeroed the balance at Christmas to buy tasty food & boring petrol!

Woodlandarchitect · 08/01/2022 18:43

@BigSkies22 and @ancientgran the charity shop said no to our donations (and everyone else’s) and the weather was so bad we went straight home!

the roads were really scary Shock I was glad to get home and have a cuppa!

Gemster19 · 08/01/2022 19:31

Forgot to add that I saw a billboard today with the tagline 'Do-what-you-canuary' - I didn't see what is was for but am guessing it was intended to be a softer version of 'veganuary', but I really liked the principle and thought it was spot on for this thread!

There will prob only be a few on here who can manage a perfect no (non essential) spend January, let's be honest January is tough and life happens, but we can do the best we can Smile, and not only will it be good for Jan but it will prob set us up with good habits for future months!

chimichangaz · 08/01/2022 19:58

'Technically' a no spend day as my friend bought coffee for our morning walk but I've sent her £10 towards our monthly coffee fund (we walk every Saturday). Also bought a pint of milk but that's it.

Spent the day moving furniture round so I'm knackered. Need to buy some of those sticky corners for rugs so I can exercise in my newly cleared out front room but they're not too expensive, plus will help me exercise at home so I think, essential!

Just eaten my leftover takeaway from last night and I now feel ready to start my healthy eating plan next week. Should be straightforward as it involves essentially lots of protein and veg!!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 08/01/2022 20:40

I've been absent mindedly browsing stuff online but just shut it down thinking, I don't need any more clothes or homeware or beauty stuff. If I look I'll see things I like.

Creditcardshame · 08/01/2022 20:44

Spent £85 on the food shop this week which included a "takeaway" for this evening which saved us a good £15 and was pretty nice too.
Dry January so no wine spends either.
No other spends - DC are back at their clubs, usually I wait for DD during her ballet lesson in a cafe but today I sat in my car (it was pouring down, otherwise I would have gone for a walk) and listened to my audio book with a coffee from home.
A week with less than £30 non essential spends and the DC off school, I am quite chuffed!

Another no spend a for me except for some bread and milk which we needed. I'm starting to get the new Spendabuck now I think, had a leftovers evening for tea tonight. all the little bits of leftovers from various mealsfrom the week, the kids each had something different to eat it was quite amusing

Spend free not spendabuck 🤪
TabithaTittlemouse · 08/01/2022 21:36

I had lunch out today, I had forgotten about it. It was nice so I’m not beating myself up on spending!

It takes my 2022 spends to £28.

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/01/2022 21:37

@BigSkies22 what kind of navy wool do you need? I have loads here sat doing nothing that I could send?

ancientgran · 08/01/2022 21:45

NSD and I put three new tops in a basket and then logged out. I don't need new tops but sometimes the sale prices are tempting.

BigSkies22 · 08/01/2022 22:31

@TabithaTittlemouse - ah, that's kind of you. Thanks so much. The lady in the shop promises she'll have some in next week - it's just called 'mending wool', on. a little card, and I'm going to use it to darn a navy jumper that my spaniel got his claws into.

Baked potatoes, salad and the leftover chicken and ham for dinner. Watched David Tennant as Phineas Fogg - good fun! Did FT crossword with DH and now about to read an article on sorting and storing clothes. Rock and roll here!

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2022 00:05

Spent £20 on wool for knitting today, it’s for presents 🎁 so will be a saving in the long run

Takes my monthly spend so far to £26.10 🙈

We went out for a birthday lunch yesterday so an unavoidable £40, but the food was really delish, so a nice thing to spend on really. We were very careful apart from that and my husband seems to be on board with the money saving plan too.

Trying to use coins to pay for things, it feels really old fashioned these days but very satisfying getting enough together and making a purchase without it affecting your bank balance if that makes sense?

I’ve also cancelled prime membership at £7.99 a month so that will add up too.

Good luck for a no spendy Sunday!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 09/01/2022 10:47

I fancied a cafe breakfast this morning but rummaged in the fridge and made garlic butter mushrooms on toast with a Nespresso coffee and it was fab. And free! Well I used food I already had, you know what I mean.

Should be a NSD today as DCs are both isolating awaiting PCR results. They're both under the weather so happy gaming under a blanket. I'm not feeling great either and start a new job tomorrow 😬

ancientgran · 09/01/2022 10:59

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers Good luck for tomorrow, hope you aren't going down with what the DC have.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 09/01/2022 11:02

Thanks @ancientgran

BigSkies22 · 09/01/2022 12:07

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers - ooh, new year, new job! Good luck with it.

The third load of washing this weekend is currently on, I've decluttered the medicine 'cabinet' (actually a plastic box on the top shelf of the airing cupboard) and I'm about to head out to the garden with the indoor geraniums to pot them on. There are very few indoor plants I can manage to keep alive, and these are cuttings I took from pots outdoors last year. The compost and pots we already own, so no new spending involved.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2022 14:53

Invasionofthegutsnatchers

I've been to the tip this morning and got rid of general rubbish and some cardboard etc. always feels so good to get rid of it! I'm like a regular there.....

Also went to Asda to do the shop and was very pleasantly surprised it was only £67, as I'd bought a lot of chicken breasts, fruit and veg etc. then took something back to dunelm and bought two full length mirrors, a fancy new wfh mug, doormat and some bathroom cleaner and only spent £17. Counting that as no spend technically as I returned a game to sainsburys and got £20 back!

Possibly will be spending later on as I may go to a sports match - season ticket holder but parking, raffle ticket, something to drink etc. I may not go though as I could get a whole lot of stuff done at home!!

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2022 15:08

ive had another spend day....

baby present for newborn! £12 for bag, card & clothing set

£6.20 coffee
£20 wool
£12 presents

makes a total of

£38.20 this January - so far

Fuuuuuckit · 09/01/2022 16:00

Second spend day for me. £7.50 on carpet cleaner solution and £3.00 on a replacement ice cube tray. I'm half counting it as household spends though.

ancientgran · 09/01/2022 16:08

Another NSD for me but hardly surprising as I seem to be hibernating for January. I need to go out tomorrow cold rain or whatever.

DrRamsesEmerson · 09/01/2022 16:32

Spend day for me - lunch with friends so £20 on a decent bottle of wine and some good chocolates to take with us.

ancientgran · 09/01/2022 20:02

Just got a £7 study on prolific. I'm hoping to get enough cash to pay for my hair appointment so I don't have to touch my pension/wages. It's looking good, not essential but if I don't pay with real money it won't matter. Well it won't to me, might be cheating though.
