anyone up for a no spend January?

just the normal utilities, food shopping and transport costs

then put the purse/wallet away and don't spend till February

a good way to rebalance the balance after xmas

Zero again today (Tesco shop doesn't count). Booked a food shop delivery for Weds so feeling quite optimistic. So far...

CheeseMaiden · 02/01/2022 19:27

Went to a museum today with DH and DD, took coffee in a thermos and packed lunch and snacks. Museum was free so I only spent £5 on travel, bargain day out!

Creditcardshame · 02/01/2022 19:56

@TheLeigh do you still have access to the books on Audible if you cancel the membership? I was under the impression you lose them and so I keep mine going and then pause for 3 months a year to catch up.
I have about 6 to listen to at the moment so will pause Feb - May.
I am also doing the 1,000 mile walk challenge this year, I only got to 750 last year.

Yy to the dhal! It will probably do you for a lunch the next day too if your takeaway is anything like mine - huge portions. I think it tastes better the next day.

Didn't spend today. Tomorrow we are taking the DC to clip and climb which will be £20 but will come home for food.

I'm in, want to buy a home in 2023 so it's super saving time the now.

Nestess · 02/01/2022 20:03

Yes please. New Year's Resolution was to get a handle on the budget in 2022. I'm looking to actually do a budget in the first instance. All suggestions gratefully received.

MandUs · 02/01/2022 20:06

Spent £40.30 on a Tesco delivery.

don't forget your local library will have free audio books and digital books

and some have free subscription magazines digitally, Hello, Good housekeeping etc if your read a couple thats a saving of over £100 per year - worth looking for

NSD yesterday.

Failed on two counts today though as I was meant to be stopping smoking but ended up buying cigarettes. My neighbour was also supposed to be stopping though so we went halves on a pack so that's a saving of 50%. 🙈🙈

specialsauce · 02/01/2022 21:10

I've tried making tarka dhall @ivykaty44 and it was rubbish - certain things only the pro's can make!

I'll defintely get a big one @Creditcardshame and spread over a couple of meals - good call

As a side note - I just spent hours researching and renegotiating 3 lots of monthly bills: sky, netflix and broadband - managed to save £61 per month - thats £732 per year! Not a bad days work - don't forget to put some time into this everyone - it's worth it

VividImaginationAgain · 02/01/2022 21:40

No spend yesterday or today.

I’m planning to invite my sister for lunch one day next week but will make homemade soup and bake a cake. I might have to buy a baguette. I do have fancy crackers that were Christmas gift and different cheeses, perhaps that would do.

@Creditcardshame you keep the library but lose any unspent credits if you cancel.

Creditcardshame · 02/01/2022 22:22

Thanks @Hibiscusroses I think I will cancel in that case.

How did you negotiate netflix?
specialsauce · 03/01/2022 09:21

@SurfWaves I called Sky with full intention of cancelling all tv and just keeping Netflix and watching iplayer. I usually pay Netflix directly but sky gave me an ultracheap deal with netflix for a fiver. £26 all in.

Ah that's brilliant but we don't have tv Grin

HoulYourWhist · 03/01/2022 09:52

Cancelled Amazon prime, kindle unlimited and audible. Annoyingly I discovered I have been paying for Prime twice a month as I have 2 accounts (that's what I get for using a different email account for a "free" trialConfused) and as one account was linked to the TV and I was using the other to order items I can't be refunded more than one month! Ah well, lesson learned I guess

Oh no! Hopefully you can get that month back and just carry on without it.
coodawoodashooda · 03/01/2022 10:06

I think I am going to try that with Vodafone. Any tips?

What do you have with vodaphone, broadband or mobile? - and has your contract ended or are you still in contract?
ancientgran · 03/01/2022 12:18

I'm spending £10 with topcashback today, they are offering a £2 bonus on a £10 spend so I'm buying a £10 Asda gift card. I only use Asda occasioally but a 20% bonus is worth it. So that means I've spent £10 on the gift card and £4.75 on birthday cards so far this month.

Not sure if I should count the £10 as I will spend it on food shopping? What do you think?

How frustrating. I found out that DH had somehow signed up for Prime and I already have it so I always do the amazon order. We did manage to get it back as he'd never used it, it was only a couple of months but I hate throwing money away like that.
coodawoodashooda · 03/01/2022 12:25

Still in contract. Just my mobile thanks.

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2022 15:37

ok so today I went to the supermarket and dd asked for a Starbucks, as its inside the supermarket
,

as she's been isolating with covid19 I thought it'd be nice to treat her

got to the counter and in my purse I had a Starbucks card from before the pandemic and asked the lady at the counter to see if there was any money on it - there was so free treat coffee!

Im going to count that as a no spend day...

£0 zero spends this year so far

OP posts:
MadMadMadamMim · 03/01/2022 15:46

£7.67 in the supermarket today - but it was on bread, milk, eggs and vegetables so I'm counting that as zero? They were all necessary food.
