anyone up for a no spend January?

just the normal utilities, food shopping and transport costs

then put the purse/wallet away and don't spend till February

a good way to rebalance the balance after xmas

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 16:20

£10.90 on party food for a colleague's birthday tomorrow. £5 on a crap film on Amazon, shouldn't have bothered. Total spends for Jan £30.90

Mogloveseggs · 03/01/2022 16:42

3 days in and only essential shopping bought. Dh did buy me some bathroom scales as I've definitely put weight on over Christmas and wanted to see how much (in a diet club at work and it doesn't restart till feb). So technically nothing but sort of £12.

InvincibleInvisibility · 03/01/2022 16:46

3/1 zero spend but have sold something so +5€ Grin

Tomorrow I'll go to the supermarket for fresh food. Will need will power to avoid getting extras.

TheLeigh · 03/01/2022 17:19

Zero spend so far.

Have haircut booked 1st February, am trying to do NS January and February though. I may try to delay it till March but hair is already a bit wild.

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/01/2022 17:31

Great result @ivykaty44! I bet it tasted nicer because it was free Grin

Another no spend day here. We went on an 8 mile hike instead.

I need new leggings for running as I’ve sadly grown out of mine but I’ll wait until I’ve sold something on vinted and get them there.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/01/2022 17:33

Oh yeah forgot my sold item so current spend total is £20.90 for January.

Three birthdays this week but luckily I stashed cards and gifts last year so have some nice things in the present drawer to dig out. I must not add to the stash or my toiletries stash or clothes stash which should all last me all year.

VividImaginationAgain · 03/01/2022 17:43

I got £20 from a friend today for her share of a joint gift bought last year. She has done lots for me so I tried to refuse it but she insisted. I also found £1.20 in the pocket of a jacket I haven’t worn for ages.

£21.20 up and no spend for Jan.

Thelongdarkteatime · 03/01/2022 17:48

Spendy day today (but planned). £25 on top up shop from Morrisons and £14 on end of holidays Costa trip. Back to work tomorrow

Creditcardshame · 03/01/2022 18:03

We have stuck to our planned spend of £20.

However, I am home with the DC this week as they don't go back to school until Monday. This will be a challenge. Usually I would take them to the cinema, soft play etc but these all cost.

AlexCabot · 03/01/2022 18:04

Work today so no spending apart from eggs, Lidl prices plus an extra ten percent off so not bad!

ancientgran · 03/01/2022 18:04

I decided to buy a Morrisons voucher instead of Asda so I have spent £10 which will get spent on essential food shopping but my £2 bonus from topcashback has already tracked so I'm happy with that. I bought it from the £30 I got from a survey site payout so I'm totally confused about if I'm no spend, spend or making money. Grin I guess I can interpret it whichever way I want to do the accounts?

DrRamsesEmerson · 03/01/2022 18:29

No spend today - had a neighbour round and cooked lunch for her. Now have lots of leftovers which is excellent!

chimichangaz · 03/01/2022 18:43

Bought some hand soap (we'd run out) and some milk for my niece who is isolating - £3.65

Otherwise I've returned a game, and two Amazon items so money in was £38.50. Still got a lamp to return to dunelm, and some stuff to sell, so I'm happy with where I'm at so far 😁

FilterFrog · 03/01/2022 19:20

Can I join in too?
I’m aiming for low spend rather than no spend - and am allotting myself a weekly spending limit which includes extra food.

I’m planning to eat through a lot of what we have in the freezer and cupboards too. This will be good for both spending and hopefully getting towards more organised kitchen cupboards too!
I have spent today which wasn’t great. Dd needed some new wellies and didn’t buy the cheapest ones as I stupidly asked her opinion on which ones she liked. Next time I’ll buy and just present them without any choice. We do do on daily muddy dog walks though so they’ll get lots of use. My other spending was going to a cafe with dd and a friend of hers who we bumped into in town. They’d had a few arguments over the last month but they were getting on so well that when the mum suggested suggested lunch and the girls were begging and so excited I felt I couldn’t say no. We did go to a cheaper cafe though and I only had a cup of tea so it was only £5 all in. I’m hoping it’s true value is a few mended bridges between the girls.
I’ve marked both expenses against my weekly limit. I’ve also noted just how easily I’m able to convince myself to spend. Especially when it comes to Dd! I think this will take some work to get past…

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/01/2022 19:28

@FilterFrog wellies (and hiking boots) would be a necessity for us! If they need replacing they need replacing!

woodlandarchitect · 03/01/2022 19:32

No Spend Day!

And we’ve added £35 worth of stuff on FB marketplace! Smile

I amended the weekly shop and it came to £45. Using up the guff in the freezer. We normally spend approx £75

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2022 19:37

Great result @ivykaty44! I bet it tasted nicer because it was free grin

it tasted great after id been cleaning all morning....blitzed 4 rooms from top to bottom, that kept me busy

FilterFrog · 03/01/2022 19:37

@TabithaTittlemouse - yes I agree. They’re fairly essential for us to. We mainly only go to parks with the dog but our local one gets particularly waterlogged/muddy so without wellies many a pair of shoes would get ruined. I guess I’m just disappointed In how quickly I managed to talk myself into buying a more expensive pair. It wasn’t a huge amount, but it all adds up.

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2022 19:42

Have haircut booked 1st February,

im booking for beginning of February for trim and highlights, my hairdresser is very reasonable priced though.

FilterFrog · 03/01/2022 19:42

I did however skip some of my subscribe and save items from Amazon which were due to be delivered by the end of the week. So that’s £15 saved.

Wow! Well deserved!
MakeUsACuppa · 03/01/2022 19:49

No spend day for me, I've managed to cobble together a menu plan until Thursday and so Friday can be my food shop day.

I need to top up the DCs lunch money accounts and buy a bus pass but I'm going to count that as essential.

Gemster19 · 03/01/2022 20:19

No spends for me today - top up shop but was all essential food and I used £5 worth of Clubcard vouchers towards it (that were mainly earned from DP's spending so that's a double win for me 😂).

Took dog for a v long walk at a Woodland Trust area but the car park I was expecting to have to use was closed so didn't have to pay for parking either 👍🏼.

SurfWaves · 03/01/2022 21:55

No spends here today except some food which is essential. I've quit Magazines and nonessentials from today

BiggerSkies22 · 03/01/2022 22:16

Happy new year, all. Great thread, can I join? I have some non-negotiable expenses, mostly related to DS who is in his first year at university (hall fees, helping him pay off purchase of an e-bike) and a 0% credit card balance to pay off by October. My goal is to clear the debts and build up an emergency fund of at least £1k by September, and, separately, put away extra money for DS' second year rent. So - to kick off my good intentions, this is how January is shaping up so far.

Dry January for both me and DH (I'm actually having a dry year, and hoping to persuade DH to do at least 100 days, but January makes it sound more manageable).
Noting down all food and cleaning supplies expenditure and making every effort to use stuff up. Already shop at Aldi, butcher, greengrocer, cook from scratch, freeze, meal plan - but this did go awry somewhat last year, so recommitting to being hyper-vigilant again this year.
Managed to cut house insurance costs when I renewed today - £299 for building and contents, plus some specified items away from the home, plus legal cover and home breakdown. Pet insurance will go up by £2 per month this month, but I've searched and this one is the best I can find for the level of cover we want.
I ditched the gym membership during the first lockdown and have managed to stick to walking and home workouts. Managed a no-buy year on clothes last year, and am going to try again this year (though really tempted by the Cos sale today! Nice shirt at half-price and I would wear it a lot. Sigh.)
Last year I joined ShowFilmFirst, which gives you free or very discounted tickets to theatre, film, music, talks. Will keep an eye on that - and make more use of free entry exhibitions. We're in London and made a start by visiting the Turners at Tate Britain today. Paid for transport obviously but swerved the tea room. We've got theatre tickets for Saturday, but those were paid for last year.
No new books but read/reread what we have and use the library.
I switched banks to Santander last year, and so should get £130 reward in February. I joined Prolific and TopCashBack last year so got a bit extra there.

My real weakness is stuff for the house - we're decorating, I'm very interiors-obsessed right now, and Pinterest is brimming with lovely things. I'm going to try and satisfy that urge by using up paint supplies where I can, and repurposing picture frames and making things look better with cleaning and decluttering and generally pimping what we have!
