Outfoxed by energy switching

I tell you, my brain goes to mush when I go onto these energy comparison sites or to an actual company to get a quote. I'm currently with British Gas, standard variable as my fixed tariff ran out in December. They have put my monthly dd for both gas and elec up to about £95 a month. I have £250 credit on the account but they say I can't have that back as it's needed for over the winter months. I want out and I want out fast, but having looked at EDF no savings, PurePlanet is my top hit on MSE but not sure if it's worth going to an 'unknown to me' company. Any advice appreciated.

When you change they refund you the overpayment
automatically. Try look after my bills.com. Theyll find the cheapest and change you yearly.

Thanks, I was just looking at that. What I can't work out is the day elec and night elec annual usage, as it doesn't show on my bill.

Do you definitely have different rates for day and night? We don't.

If you did, they would show on the bill (they'd have to).

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 06/03/2021 12:30

Well, it's three readings on the meter, which flashes onto the next reading so quick I can hardly catch it, and when I enter the readings it asks for day and night, but this is not shown in the annual figure (but asked for when applying for a quote with another company).
30987 - you gave us your meter reading 31250 - we read your meter
07284 - you gave us your meter reading 07347 - we read your meter

Your electricity tariff:
Energy Plus Protection Dec 2020v2
Paid by: Monthly Direct Debit
Tariff ends: 31 Dec 2020
Exit fee: £30.00
Estimated annual usage: 1440.62 kWh Estimated annual cost: £337.16

Is there a history of readings on your account anywhere? Or do you write them down anywhere?

Or, if you've used comparison sites before, they sometimes save the figures you've used before.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2021 12:43

Or, could you video your meter running through the figures and watch on slo-mo?!

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 06/03/2021 13:15

Thanks, I do manage to take photos of the readings. I keep the photos I have taken in the past after submitting the readings.

Octopus are coming out the best for me at the moment, anyone had any problems with them? I've been on twitter and looked at 'lookaftermybills' and they had a lot of negative feedback.

Look after my bills have been fine for me. I did it as part of 20cogs so I got 20 quid for signing up. Mines is v straightforward electricity account though.
