ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 14:02

I've never been this broke! Well I have but so long ago.

I used to have lunch out and takeaway coffees and buy fresh flowers.

Now I'm scrabbling for discount codes. Anyone else who would like to come to my pity party?

Poor Thigh! What's the cause of your brokeness, and is there any light at the end of the tunnel to help become less broke?

I do sympathise, I live only 1 payday away from destitution as I think many people do.

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 14:20

Chillies thank you, a very big drop in my income due to covid-19 (but not grant worthy believe me I've triple checked).

I hope it's temporary and applying for p/t jobs whilst playing 'pretend it's the 70s' in my head.

I've just had to shift the online shop back a day, shifted a standing order back a day. I'm watching everything like a hawk.

I enjoy economising but this isn't fun any more.

Broke here too Flowers

Also just reorganised the food shop and making dinners from what’s leftover

It won’t be forever I hope 🤞🏻

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 14:49

Just going through the cupboards and I've found some half used perfume I don't like, that's going on eBay. There's a fair amount of soup because no one likes it. So I'll eat that.

One of my kids said - when are we getting good shampoo, I hate this stuff?! I said never Grin

Wildthingsx · 20/09/2020 14:52

Another one who’s dirt poor thanks to Covid !

Making me feel better knowing I’m not alone as I have many friends who are all off on furlough, complaining that they aren’t earning their usual amount ..... meanwhile my husband and I lost our jobs and our savings so having to start from stratch.

Will share any discounts I find ! X

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:07

It makes me embarrassed to be like this as a fully formed adult. My work I don't think will go back to the level it was until possibly next Summer. Pissed off to be job hunting to supplement my income.

OP posts:
FannyFernackerpan · 20/09/2020 15:07

Me too.

Been self employed for 27 years. Haven't had a paid job since May 7th. Surviving on the two self employed grants from the government and the keep my kids pay me (both working and still living at home).

All my clients are in the arts and entertainment sector - the worst hit of the lot. One of the theatres I work for will never re-open, and I am seriously doubtful if my own business will ever recover. Personally I think I'm fucked. I can't see it coming back after this.

If nothing turns up by the end of this month I will have no choice but to go on universal credit. First time claiming benefits in my life.

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:08

Ha! I have ingredients to make a chocolate cake so I'll do that.

Pearsapiece · 20/09/2020 15:10

Yep! We have 28 quid to last until next Monday. Food shop is coming in an hour. The slow cooker will be being used this week! Just gotta hope we don't need fuel or nappies

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:13

Fanny my small business will fold I think, it's running again now but at literally 1/5th of what it was. Thankfully I don't have a premises. So as it's running to an extent I feel I can't quite give up on it. So that leaves a temporary p/t job to prop everything up in the meantime.

I'm actually quite scared, what if it's still like this in a year and I've sold everything etc etc?

OP posts:
ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:15

Pears do you mean till tomorrow or the following Monday?

OP posts:
Cherryup · 20/09/2020 15:16

Yep same here, DH made redundant with 1 weeks pay back in June and can't find anything, I've been on 80% since March. Outgoings haven't changed much though! Not entitled to UC, so things very tight and I just can't see it getting any better for a long time.

We're managing by selling a few things every month, but this will run out v soon and a mortgage holiday which ends next month.

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:19

Oh well, at least we're not alone. I was feeling really ashamed at my situation. Anyone for porridge (75p from Tesco)? I can tell you the price of Tesco's entire value range.

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 15:27

I just redid my fuel, I went from £89 with British Gas to £48 with octopus. They'll probably hike it in a few months but I'll just switch again. I have a code if anyone is interested.

I looked at switching my car from fully comp to 3rd party but it was more expensive!

OP posts:
RadioActiveBrain · 20/09/2020 17:50

It's dreadful isn't it. I posted a while ago about dp's work situation (I name changed!) and was essentially told that he should just go and find a job and he was lazy and not trying hard enough if he couldn't find one!

His business is dependent on the hospitality industry. If they lockdown again, or close pubs and restaurants, that's it for him.

Pearsapiece · 20/09/2020 18:36

@ThighthighOfthigh unfortunately, until next Monday... As in over a week. Got a weeks food shop in though apart from the weekend food which will be bought from aldi in the 'top up shop'.

Rebelwithallthecause · 20/09/2020 18:53

@ThighthighOfthigh I can’t change my energy until November but planning on changing to octopus
Il use your code when it comes to it if you like?

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 18:59

share.octopus.energy/ideal-coral-136

There it is, thanks, we get £50 each.

Rebel £28 for 8 days is going to be rough! Have you got any supermarket points you can cash in?

ThighthighOfthigh · 20/09/2020 19:04

Radio people are stupid sometimes. I've been applying for jobs and getting turned down. I've never had that before but I've been self employed for so long that i just haven't paid any attention to the job market.

I'm just trying to really examine my outgoings and see what I can cut. I've got grocery down to £40pw for 3 adults and 2 small dogs and there's not a lot left.

I was thinking about cutting out the dogs' insurance but I just can't bring myself to.

Don't know whether this will be of any help at all but I recently discovered an app called Olio. Like freecycle.
As part of an initiative to reduce food waste our local Tesco (not sure if all do this) uses the service to dispose of food items that have reached their BBD.
Every week someone locally us collects the food in the evening, then lists what there is. The catch is it has to be picked up by midnight (I assume a liability thing be Tesco). So only really useful if you have someone fairly local to you who has volunteered to collect the food every week.
Typically it is bread, ready meals, pre-chopped veg, over ripe food etc that needs eating quickly. So it by no means covers all your weekly shop, but can help save money.
It is not a charity thing - where we are the people who take part are a mix and include those who are fairly comfortable (but want to reduce food waste) as well as those on tight budgets. Don't know if that's of any use to anyone... very area dependant and also quite dependant on cooking skills and facilities (the ability to turn over-ripe fruit into jam, vast quantities of veg into soup etc).

SquishySquirmy · 20/09/2020 19:19

Sorry the 2nd paragraph should say: "Local to us"

CoronaIsWatching · 20/09/2020 19:22

Just get a credit card

UsernameN0Tavailable · 20/09/2020 19:30

You need to guard the pennies, several people have said they are getting supermarket deliveries on this thread. What is that £3.50 a week? Can you walk to a supermarket every other day and buy from the reduced section?

Have you done yourself an excel spreadsheet of every outgoing?
