I'm not too far from Northumberland. I'm fact you will most likely drive past me. Where are you going. Bet I can find you some vouchers...Grin

ememem84 · 10/06/2020 16:25

£24.99 on a new duvet from amazon so I didn’t have to venture out to the shop.

ChristmasSeacow · 10/06/2020 16:49

Seahouses. We’ve been before twice, pre-kids, and loved it. Last time I was with my sisters too and we were meant to go on a boat trip to Bass Rock and photograph gannets diving but the weather was awful and it was cancelled. Got some great puffin shots though. And fantastic fish and chips 😋

We’ll have to go to Barnard Castle too as DH has a relative there who we’d want to visit. and to test our eyesight Wink

Snuggly, on airbnb and homeaway.co.uk, both of which I’ve used a lot, you can search for flexible cancellation and so that makes it very low risk. I’m still hoping we’ll get to Wales this summer but if not we’ll at least get our money back. I will be so
Disappointed though! I hope you do get some time off next year, no one can work for months without a break.

House spends, argh! London rates here and very expensive. We spent more than I want to admit on getting two bathrooms done but now I don’t know what to do about the kitchen. I don’t really want people in and out of the house for the foreseeable future and can’t actually face the disruption right now either. I also hadn’t realised until it finished but the bathroom work really took it out of me too - so many decisions to make! Our builder was also very hard work as he was extremely detail-oriented - I am a detail person myself but he was another level, it was actually a problem. The end result was excellent but it was incredibly draining, I might have to use a different builder for the kitchen.

Probably not this year though. And can’t afford to do the loft as well without borrowing a. Bit more and I’m not sure I want to do that at the moment. I’m putting off the decision.

DD is 3 this month and I just want to say: she’s an utter delight at this age. Not always easy by any means, the usual tantrums etc, but I’m loving watching her develop. The best thing is that we can have little conversations. I still don’t have that with ds who is nearly 8. I don’t at all mean to suggest I’m enjoying her more (or that I love her more - not at all!) but it’s something I’ve really looked forward too and it’s all the more miraculous to me because of how much of a struggle speech is for DS. He is also a little more settled with school now, thankfully. I shouldn’t speak too soon but he’s been home for 1.5 hours now and NO MELTDOWN YET.

I need to make some non-Lonely flapjack (it’s the best but can’t have nuts for school). Any favourites recipes? I am after something that doesn’t fall apart, and which I can stick some dried fruit and seeds in. I’m doing packed lunches for DS now and they have to be healthy but I like to make him a little treat thing that just about passes muster too Wink

maddenlightfoot · 10/06/2020 17:09

Sea that's a lovely thing to say about your dd and in no way detracts from your enjoyment and love of ds (well done on the post-school non-meltdown!). My youngest dds are just over 3.5. If lockdown had happened a year ago I don't think we would have survived - they've been such hard work as babies and toddlers - but miraculously have been a joy over the past few months.

Aldi shopping today - £94. I'm starting to really enjoy shopping for a whole week and have managed each week without any top-ups. Dh is not too pleased sometimes when he has to have odd combos or crackers with soup instead of bread towards the end of the week but I'm enjoying the challenge! We've really fallen in to the trap of having pudding every night (sorry waistline) and last night as the cupboards were bare we had Nutella on Jacobs crackers 😂

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/06/2020 17:10

I am 30 minutes from barnard castle.

Wolfcub · 10/06/2020 17:33

Sea would really recommend Druridge Bay for lovely beach stop off on the drive back down from Seahouses and if the kids like it canoeing on the lake thingy.

Love all around there. We stayed in Amble last year which was lovely for me but might be a bit quiet for some. Bamburgh is one of my favourites for beach/castle time

I can also recommend nature reserve stops before you come off a1 and join the m1 to go back south with loos and small cafes if that's better than big services for you.

Looong day at work. It's been a really rough week in our organisation after a pretty rough few months. Lots of things coming to a head and threatening to boil over

SnugglySnerd · 10/06/2020 18:06

Thanks, Sea that's a good idea. I love Northumberland. We've been a few times , there is loads to do. Love Seahouses and Banburgh (I think I've spelt that wrong!) Castle and also Kielder. You are right, 3 is a lovely age. I enjoyed it with dd1 and the dts are really lovely now they are 3. So chatty and interested in things and fewer tantrums and fights so far.

ChristmasSeacow · 10/06/2020 18:25

Seriously Madden, every time I ask her a question and she ANSWERS IT I am blown away. DS still mostly can’t process questions, beyond me asking ‘what is this?’ (and a physical object to name). He can’t do abstract concepts like ‘why’ at all, or even ‘when’. DD isn’t at ‘why’ yet but when she does it will have more significance for me than for most, I expect. But then the other day DS said ‘i don’t like sausages’ whereas he would have previously just screeched when given something he doesn’t like. That was a big milestone too!

Life lucky you, lovely round there Smile. Wolf I have screenshot your recommendations, but by the time I go I’m sure I won’t be able to find it so will Pester you again.

Sorry work is so crap - you seem to have that a lot. Does your work have any good features to make up for the shit?

I had a really busy morning and early afternoon, solid calls and Zoom meetings, but am now chilling with the DC. Oven food for dinner so I don’t have to cook properly (other than maybe flapjack). I am sure I had a good mn recipe for that once but I’ll never find it again!

ememem84 · 10/06/2020 18:38

I tend to wing it with flapjack but a fave recipe here is chocolate cherry.

So butter oats syrup and sugar and some salt (dh tried to Health it and use agave syrup and coconut oil....) chopped glacé cherries dark chocolate chunks in the mix then when it’s cool melted chocolate on top. Sometimes throw some sultanas in too.

I haven’t made the lonely flapjack recipe for ages. May try tomorrow.

Dd is so so close to crawling now. She is almost a champion bum shuffler. Ds never did that.

Ds will be 3 in September. He has developed so much recently. He’s using words I didn’t even know he knew. “Almost” being one. And “darlin” he thanks me by saying “thanks darlin” or “em darlin” (he’s picked this up from my mum...!)

Wolfcub · 10/06/2020 20:15

Sea the best flapjack has condensed milk

My job has loads of good points and I have an amazing team. But we do have lots of pressure at times and at the moment we are having to take a long hard look at ourselves

I have ordered my camera. I'm very excited

SnugglySnerd · 10/06/2020 20:24

It's brilliant when they come out with new words isn't it?? Dd1 is really into insects so we spend a lot of time hunting them in the gardens reading about them, watching YouTube videos and so on. Ds who is 3 told me this morning that bees are pollinators! I wasn't expecting that!!

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/06/2020 20:39

They're gorgeous at that age. I miss it. Though this age has its perks.

Can't help you on the flap Jack. I think I've lost lonely recipe but no one here wants chocolate on top

ChristmasSeacow · 10/06/2020 20:50

Wolf do you know what the recipe is with condensed milk? I’m sure that’s the one I’ve done before as my alternative to Lonely Flapjack. I have just flicked through literally 3,000 screenshots looking for it though, and I can’t find it 😫

Wolfcub · 10/06/2020 20:56

Two versions. I'd go for the one with more condensed milk to oats and then double the recipe

Brilliant thanks Wolf, that might be the one I made before (which I thought was quite good). I’ll try it! You’ll make my Ds very happy Wink

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/06/2020 21:26

Evening all, we've had a nice day today it's the puppy's 1st bday and we took him to the beach! It's was lovely, dd and the dog had a great time. The ice cream kiosk was open so £5 on ice creams.

I'm happy with today's announcement which means we can now officially see my mum! Planning a sleepover at hers soon and can't wait to give her a hug 🤗 Sea will you be able to see your mum now?

Pic of the birthday pup on the beach.

ChristmasSeacow · 10/06/2020 23:50

We can. DM is thinking about it - I think she really wants to A LOT but it’s hard to know whether it’s a risk she should take, with both DCs in childcare settings. I think she will though. Levels in London are lower than other parts of the country right now so it’s a calculated risk. I can’t wait for her to cuddle the DC - I want to see her with them more than I want to see her myself. DS has missed her so much...

ChristmasSeacow · 10/06/2020 23:51

And happy birthday to the handsome pup! The beach is exactly the right place for a doggy birthday Smile

lifelongfrugaleer · 11/06/2020 07:21

Happy birthday pup. Gorgeous pic. And I agree a birthday day out at the beach is best.

I'm more gutted at the school's not going back until September at the earliest. Pleased for those who can see families now though.

Need to return a eBay parcel today as they sent the wrong thing. Also need some chicken from the butcher

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/06/2020 08:53

My mum explained her thinking by using the analogy of a boat being safe in the harbour but that's not what it's built for.... thought that was a good way of putting it.

ChristmasSeacow · 11/06/2020 14:47

Quiet on here today!

Flapjack is in the oven. The mixture is very wet so I’m not sure how it will turn out but we’ll see. I expect the kids won’t mind either way!

This is supposed to be my non-work day but I’ve been working since the school run this morning, until 2.30pm. Need to grab some lunch!

maddenlightfoot · 11/06/2020 15:19

I was listening to Woman's Hour earlier sea and there was a woman with an autistic son saying how much she loves chattering away to her NT daughter as it's something they can do together whilst still focusing attention and care on her son. She also said how essential it has been to keep sending her son to school. It made me think of you 😊

Pouring with rain here this afternoon so we've snuggled in for a post-school movie and popcorn - thank goodness for Disney+!

ememem84 · 11/06/2020 15:29

Oooh we have Disney+ I love it.

Have introduced ds to:

Ducktails (woohoo)
Gummi Bears (bouncing here and there and everywhere!)
Pooh bear

We’ve also watched the lion king (cartoon) and he melted my heart in that scene “no daddy lion!!! Wake up daddy lion!!! Daddy lion sleeping!!! Ooooh a cow!!”

And moana.

Mrsmadevans · 11/06/2020 16:31

How did the flapjack come out Sea?

Made yet another sodding banana loaf earlier. I am drowning under a sea of bananas oranges (which I hate) carrots and potatoes
