Tax credits childcare element

Hiya. Our circumstances have changed and it looks like we are no longer entitled to WTC, only a very small amount of CTC. Before our circs changed despite getting WTC and having DC in nursery we weren't entitled to the childcare element. As our circs changed I put in a childcare provider as was hoping we would be now entitled to the childcare element. HMRC haven't processed all the changes yet so haven't given me confirmation. However after a bit of investigation, I think you can only get the childcare element if you're entitled to WTC, right? So entitlement to CTC alone means we can't claim childcare element and need to use the tax free childcare scheme instead?

I’m not sure exactly how it works but I only get child tax credit normally and have told them I am currently not paying childcare and I’m not getting anything now so I assume it must be taken into account somehow .
