I'd have no room for anything else if I had all that in my cupboard

RedIsWhereItsAt · 21/02/2020 17:33

Some of that is relatively expensive!

I always have
Rice (normal, not microwave)
Dal beans
Tinned tomatoes
Bread in freezer
Porridge oats
Pasta

I think of staples as stuff I'd cook with: oil, flour, sugar, spices, salt, carbs (pasta, rice), biscuits etc. Only thing in tins are some tomatoes and pulses. I use them up and buy more when I need them, and I buy fruit/veg/bread for consumption on the day or the next. I don't have an in case of emergency stockpile.

RedIsWhereItsAt

Yes it is but the microwave rice is bought now and again as opposed to regular I have a big bag of normal rice to

And in actual fact that cost me all of £7 to stick the whole cupboard so not that expensive

I always have rice, lentils, couscous, tinned tomatoes, pasta, dried chillies, buckwheat, black beans, lots of other dried beans, garlic powder, onion powder.
I don’t eat tinned spaghetti , microwave rice or use any sauce jars.
Plenty of supplies in my freezers but it’s mostly stuff I’ve grown.
Lots of pickles too.
You’ll save a lot more by not storing ready meal type stuff but preparing any sauces to freeze.
Apologies if you do not have a freezer.

Theres plenty in the freezer and we always have pasta, rice, etc handy. I just dont stockpile the items you do. I dont regard tinned custard/rice pudding as essentials and we dont all eat beans

Mirandaqueenbee · 21/02/2020 17:42

Actually didn't think of things like Dal beans

Lentils and chickpeas are your friend Smile

MrDarcysMa · 18/05/2020 18:52

I don't buy things like tinned spaghetti/ rice pudding rather I have the dried versions and tinned tomatoes for example so I could make lots of pasta meals, jar of olives to throw in.
My store cupboard is full of pulses, lentils, spices, different types of rice so I was fine when coronavirus hit. Black beans are my favourite! and dried chickpeas came in handy to make hummus but I find the tinned ones are better for roasting.
Tinned peaches are nice in porridge as well as frozen berries.

I always have a very well stocked pantry that could feed us all (me DH and two teenage boys) for at least a month.
Some of the essentials are:
baked beans
pasta
rice
cous cous
lentils
porridge oats
sugar
flour
yeast
spices
tinned tomatoes/sweetcorn etc
tinned fruit
chickpeas
soya mince
pasta sauces
soups
cereal
long life juices
wine

We also have a decent sized kitchen garden which keeps us ticking over with herbs/veg/fruit and two chest freezers.

bellinisurge · 18/05/2020 19:02

You need to speak to us on the Preppers topic, op. We do exactly this kind of thing for exactly those reasons. And other reasons. But possible unemployment or money problems is one of them.

Namey32 · 25/05/2020 09:28

Being veggie, my cupboard is well stocked with:
Lentils (dried - red and green)
Chickpeas - tinned
Tinned tomatoes
Passata
Baked beans
Kidney beans
Pinto beans
Pasta
Rice
Porridge oats
Weetabix
Spices
Flour
Yeast
Soup
Juice

But I do much of our own cooking and I batch cook for the freezer so I can just pull something out if needed.
