Universal credit nightmare, please help it's urgent

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:21

If there is anyone who is familiar with universal credit please can you help me with a situation I’ve found myself in. This is the first time I’ve ever used universal credit so I don’t know the ins and outs of it all. I was in my last job for 7 years but had to leave, I won’t go into the reason why so please don’t judge. I have a new job starting in February but for now I need help from Universal credit just to keep me afloat until after Christmas.

I submitted my claim on the 21st of October and it runs from the 21st to the 20th of November. I was paid by my previous employer on the 28th of October, this was my last wage from them. I used my wages to pay my bills and rent at the beginning of this month. I was expecting to receive money from Universal Credit on the 27th of this month which I would of then used to pay my rent and bills at the beginning of December.

I received my statement from UC today which saids I’m not entitled to anything as I had money from my previous employer on the 28th of October. As it falls after the date I submitted my claim I’m not entitled to anything. To me, it seems I’m not entitled to any financial help due to a technicality. I’m wondering, if had I submitted my claim after the 28th, would I be entitled to something?

As I said above I was paid on the 28th of October and that money was then used to pay my bills at the beginning of this month as my rent and most of my bills go out on the 1st of each month. I’m not really sure how UC can expect me to somehow stretch one months wage over two months, as I won’t be paid from them now until the 27th of December, and that’s if I’m entitled to anything anyway. (They can’t actually tell me, I have to wait until the end of each month to receive a statement).

I’m really panicking now as I have no money to pay my rent and bills at the beginning of December. Their basically expecting me to go a month without any money. I’ve tried applying for an advanced payment but this is the message I received when I tried to do it online this morning (Pic attached).

I’ve put a message in my journal for my work coach but I doubt she’ll see it until Monday. I can’t help but feel quite frustrated as I’ve been attending meetings with them once a week for the last 3 weeks. Had I known I wouldn’t be entitled to anything I probably wouldn’t have wasted money on transport as I could have put that money towards my bills. I did report I would be receiving my last wage at the end of October when I submitted my claim, and I also told my work coach. Had I been made aware that I wouldn’t receive anything I would have waited until after the 28th to submit my claim so I do feel the communication has been quite poor in this instance, although I’m not surprised as I’ve seen threads on here before about how useless they are.

The only reason I put my claim in before the 28th was because I was told I had to wait 5 weeks to receive any money, but had I known it would then mean I didn’t receive anything at all I would have just waited instead, as obviously some money is better than no none at all.

Please can someone shed some light? Is there anything I can do? I might have to email my landlord and ask if I can pay my rent in a month but I’m not sure how well that will go down so I’m really worried and scared. I have no family to help me financially either or savings as I was in hospital at the beginning of the year and had to use most of it to cover my rent/bills whilst off sick as my sick pay didn’t cover it.

Thank you

It won't let me upload the picture, I don't know why!

Try the Council on Monday.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:29

Try them for what? Sorry I don't understand?

Are you fit and able enough to work now, there are often seasonal jobs at this time of year.

HappyHammy · 23/11/2019 13:31

The council benefits office or citizens advice might be able to give you advise

CodenameVillanelle · 23/11/2019 13:32

Yes, this vicious little trick is built in to universal credit

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 23/11/2019 13:34

I’m not totally clued up on this but the same thing happened to my sister & she was able to get an advancement on UC they loaned her £350 and she paid it back at £40 a month. This was because there was a 6 week wait and she spent her last wage on bills. They also organised her a food bank parcel to last this time as well. If you rent from the council I think there’s something called a null income from when you’re waiting on benefits etc.

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2019 13:35

You could look into applying for new style jobseekers? I’m not sure how far back it can be backdated though, but it can run alongside uc. It’s contribution based so not affected by savings or income.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:35

Yes I've applied for temping jobs where I live, although there aren't very many as a lot of them you need specific skills like working in an office etc. I haven't heard back from any of them yet but even if I get a job now unfortunately it won't help me with my current situation as I wouldn't be paid until probably the end of December/beginning of January and my rent and bills are due to go out at the beginning of next month so I'm really worried.

I don't think the council deals with things like this anymore as everything was merged into universal credit. I don't have any children either so I'm not entitled to emergency accommodation if I'm kicked out of my current place.

Hi OP I'm not 100% certain on this but I think if you receive any payment within your assessment period this will affect your payment amount
So if your claim runs from 21/10 to 20/11 and you were paid your last wage on 28/10 I think this cancels out your universal credit payment. It seems unfair that you won't be receiving anything though.
It is a nasty trick and some staff do advise you to make your claim the day after you've received your final wage so that you will then receive your full UC amount
I hope this makes a bit of sense

PurpleFrames · 23/11/2019 13:36

I'm sorry but this is totally the way UC is designed to be, really inflexible.

You might be able to get a crisis loan from the council for around £50 depending on your area. Ask for a food bank voucher at the JC.

Good luck

Lunafortheloveogod · 23/11/2019 13:37

Have you got your assessment period dates? Like when this one starts and stops? You might have one with no income in between then and now.

If you were usually paid on the 28th (or was that an extra payment like owed holidays) surely you’d be ok till the 28th again. Like you’d regularly have paid your rent n bills until the next pay, travel to Uc appointments shouldn’t have been a few £100 maybe check if any of the bills could wait a month instead of the rent. A roofs more important than a phone/tv/internet.

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2019 13:37

You can apply for a discretionary housing payment though the council. And council tax benefit.

Elieza · 23/11/2019 13:37

Can you sign up at a temping agency in the meantime? That would tide you over if places are hiring extra help at this time of year.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 23/11/2019 13:37

The council most definitely do deal with this sort of thing as my sister has a benefits office within the council she can phone if things get hard. You need to be contacting the council if you can’t pay your rent.

Lunafortheloveogod · 23/11/2019 13:38

Just realised it’s already the end of November.. head is located up my arse this morning. I’d double check your assessment period though.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 23/11/2019 13:38

This is how UC works, it's bloody awful. If you don't get many responses here please post on the MSE benefits forum, there are people there who really know their stuff.

If you need food you can get a food bank referral from CAB or your GP surgery. If there is a welfare rights service at your council they can refer you too, but most of them have gone because of the cuts.

And please vote to get the Tories out next month. This system is killing people.

Nat6999 · 23/11/2019 13:39

Have you any health concerns that would mean you could get a sick note? If you have you can claim new style ESA, it will only be £73.10 a week but it is better than nothing. You can ring the council & put a nil income claim in which means that you will get your rent & council tax paid if you don't have anything that means you can claim ESA. It is an awful thing to say but on Monday I would go to the doctors & tell them you are anxious & depressed, get a sick note & put in a claim for the new style ESA, by the time they get round to assessing you, you will have started your new job.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 23/11/2019 13:41

It’s really not that easy to get ESA at all. My sister is off with sever MH issues was assessed a year ago and they decided to leave her on benefits with a sick note. It’s also not right to play the system if it isn’t the case.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:44

Sorry I'm just trying to take in all the information you've given me.

I think I'm already claiming JSA in my claim?!
I'm only entitled to two benefits which are JSA and a contribution to some of my housing costs and that's it.

I was paid £900 in October so it has literally just covered my rent and bills at the beginning of this month and they all come to around £800 excluding gas, electric, food etc.

I will contact the council on Monday but I have a feeling they won't help as my friend was homeless a few years ago and they told her she wasn't a priority because she didn't have children. x

OP posts:
MrsFoxPlus4Again · 23/11/2019 13:46

But you aren’t homeless OP as you said you have rent to pay? Also contact universal credit and ask about an advanced payment. (You pay it back monthly)

LittleFoote · 23/11/2019 13:48

Sadly this is correct.

As an example.... I get paid SMP the last working day of the month.

My reporting month runs 28th until 27th.

I will get paid for November on 29th Nov.

I will then get December pay early due to Christmas.

UC view this as two wages in one reporting period, thus cancelling my entitlement for January.

As a side note they also class my tax rebate as earnings and this reduces my UC entitlement.

So, as you have technically been paid during the reporting month you are not entitled to anything this month.

It is a joke. You could apply for a loan but would would have to pay this back out of your future entitlement.

UC is calculated using real time reporting from HMRC. Sadly, if your employer doesn't report on time this again impacts and there are currently no sanctions in place for slow reporting from employers.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:49

I'm going to ask about the advanced payment on Monday @MrsFoxPlus4Again but I'm really confused about it because when I submitted my claim on the 21st of Oct I was entitled to it but decided not to use it and just wait until November as I knew I was being paid at the end of Oct.

But now it's not even giving me the option to apply for it? I think it's because I'm not entitled to anything. I'm just so confused with it all

OP posts:
UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:50

I thought this might be the case @LittleFoote. I just wish that my work coach would have explained that to me but perhaps their told not to so they don't have to pay people.

It's so wrong
