Universal credit nightmare, please help it's urgent

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 13:21

If there is anyone who is familiar with universal credit please can you help me with a situation I’ve found myself in. This is the first time I’ve ever used universal credit so I don’t know the ins and outs of it all. I was in my last job for 7 years but had to leave, I won’t go into the reason why so please don’t judge. I have a new job starting in February but for now I need help from Universal credit just to keep me afloat until after Christmas.

I submitted my claim on the 21st of October and it runs from the 21st to the 20th of November. I was paid by my previous employer on the 28th of October, this was my last wage from them. I used my wages to pay my bills and rent at the beginning of this month. I was expecting to receive money from Universal Credit on the 27th of this month which I would of then used to pay my rent and bills at the beginning of December.

I received my statement from UC today which saids I’m not entitled to anything as I had money from my previous employer on the 28th of October. As it falls after the date I submitted my claim I’m not entitled to anything. To me, it seems I’m not entitled to any financial help due to a technicality. I’m wondering, if had I submitted my claim after the 28th, would I be entitled to something?

As I said above I was paid on the 28th of October and that money was then used to pay my bills at the beginning of this month as my rent and most of my bills go out on the 1st of each month. I’m not really sure how UC can expect me to somehow stretch one months wage over two months, as I won’t be paid from them now until the 27th of December, and that’s if I’m entitled to anything anyway. (They can’t actually tell me, I have to wait until the end of each month to receive a statement).

I’m really panicking now as I have no money to pay my rent and bills at the beginning of December. Their basically expecting me to go a month without any money. I’ve tried applying for an advanced payment but this is the message I received when I tried to do it online this morning (Pic attached).

I’ve put a message in my journal for my work coach but I doubt she’ll see it until Monday. I can’t help but feel quite frustrated as I’ve been attending meetings with them once a week for the last 3 weeks. Had I known I wouldn’t be entitled to anything I probably wouldn’t have wasted money on transport as I could have put that money towards my bills. I did report I would be receiving my last wage at the end of October when I submitted my claim, and I also told my work coach. Had I been made aware that I wouldn’t receive anything I would have waited until after the 28th to submit my claim so I do feel the communication has been quite poor in this instance, although I’m not surprised as I’ve seen threads on here before about how useless they are.

The only reason I put my claim in before the 28th was because I was told I had to wait 5 weeks to receive any money, but had I known it would then mean I didn’t receive anything at all I would have just waited instead, as obviously some money is better than no none at all.

Please can someone shed some light? Is there anything I can do? I might have to email my landlord and ask if I can pay my rent in a month but I’m not sure how well that will go down so I’m really worried and scared. I have no family to help me financially either or savings as I was in hospital at the beginning of the year and had to use most of it to cover my rent/bills whilst off sick as my sick pay didn’t cover it.

Thank you

Apply for an advance payment / loan. You won’t receive any money now until your next pay date, Ie. 27th December & any income you have in the assessment period 21.11-20.12 will be deducted. If you’re in Scotland you could ask to be paid fortnightly.

AnotherEmma · 23/11/2019 15:04

Nothing to do with what country you're in - people elsewhere can ask for an APA (alternative payment arrangement) too.

Gingerkittykat · 23/11/2019 15:10

JSA is a separate benefit, it is based on your NI contributions. It will be deducted pound for pound from your UC but is still worth claiming if you are waiting another month for a payment.

The nill income form doesn't exist, the only way you can claim housing costs now is through UC, but you need to go to the council for council tax rebate.

Each council has a welfare fund which might be able to help, also the discretionary housing payment which people mentioned above is administered through the council.

Feelslikecrystal · 23/11/2019 15:10

Oh really, I thought it was under the Scottish options in relation to the fortnightly payments, didn’t realise you could have fortnightly payments elsewhere.

I've been on the phone to my family all morning and my step dad may be able to help me. He said he can probably borrow me around £500 which would at least cover my rent so at least I'll have a roof over my head. I will need to pay him back but he said I can do that after I've started my new job and get a decent wage.

I'm also going to see if I can maybe start my new job sooner than February. Perhaps January but I'll have to speak to them and see if there's some leeway.

I just want to clarify (if anyone knows) as long as I don't earn any money between now and the 20th of December I should be entitled to help on the 27th of December? I don't want to keep wasting my time/money travelling to the job centre for the next month if the same thing is going to happen again. X

Dav69 - don't be an idiot. You will bankrupt yourself before Christmas if you send every poster in financial trouble on MN money.

Mjlp · 23/11/2019 15:19

And please vote to get the Tories out next month. This system is killing people.

I don't know much about universal credit, but I believe the tories designed it to make people wait/suffer. I agree with people's advice to phone up on Monday. From what I've seen on the news, you should be able to get an advance, somehow.

If you can't pay your rent/bills maybe calling your landlord /utility company and explaining the situation to them might help? I think British gas give unemployed people a 'warm home discount' of about £140 a year. If you need food I think you can get a food bank voucher from Cab or a gp. I hate the concept of food banks! Nobody in 2019 Britain should have to use a food bank!! The tories also invented them as an excuse to decimate welfare payments to peanuts.

I really hope you get something sorted Flowers

AnotherEmma · 23/11/2019 15:29

"as long as I don't earn any money between now and the 20th of December I should be entitled to help on the 27th of December?"

Correct.

You should also get new-style JSA before that.

hannah1992 · 23/11/2019 15:39

The reason why you cant get an advance is because it is only applied if you apply for it before your first payment. Because your first payment date has gone (even though you didnt get anything) the chance for the advance has also gone. You would need to phone them and speak to them rather than apply for it online

Babyroobs · 23/11/2019 15:45

Universal credit is calculated at the end of your assessment period and is based on whatever earnings you have received during that period. You should not have made the claim until after you had been paid as your earnings have wiped out any UC. There really isn't anything you can do about it.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/11/2019 15:46

Hello OP - we're so sorry you're in this situation - it sounds really frustrating. Sad

As with all threads concerning financial difficulty, we're dropping by with our usual reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon. In the meantime, you might find some useful information on our guide for dealing with financial difficulty

Babyroobs · 23/11/2019 15:48

Also if you claim new style JSA then that £73 per week would be deducted from any UC payment. I think they would average it out. You are no better off claiming it except that it is paid fortnightly and I think gives you a batter class of NI contributions. If you left your job voluntarily you may be declined it although it would depend on the reasons.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 15:50

I realise that now @Babyroobs. Had I known I would have taken the advanced payment but unfortunately they didn't explain that to me.

UCnightmare9 · 23/11/2019 15:51

I'm lucky I have family to help otherwise I don't know what I would have done. It's awful that people are put in this position.

Babyroobs · 23/11/2019 15:53

When people ring up to make the first appointment to verify ID they do encourage people to read up on how it works. I agree they could do more to explain how it works but I think the job centre only have limited involvement in UC. There is information about how it all works once your journal is set up.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/11/2019 16:00

OP

Log into your claim online and go to the Home tab.
You should see options like "Report a change" "Add a note" etc.

There should be an option there called "Advance", this should let you claim an advance of you need it.

I had an advance when I first wen t onto UC, I can also get another should I need it. It's only to cover emergencies and you usually have to speak to the aabout it. You also have to pay it back.

UC is a monster and the entire country, especially Tory voters, should be ashmed of it.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/11/2019 16:02

Oh and another thing.

Be careful with temp jobs.. of they pay weekly it can be disastrous for UC claimants as it may give an extra payment in your assessment period and they stop your claim.

Also be aware that they pay childcare in arrears, you'll have to pay your own the first month and submit the bill to them.

Babyroobs · 23/11/2019 16:17

Any weekly paid job will alter the amount of Uc you get each month as some months 5 pay days will fall in your assessment period and some months 4 will so the amount of Uc you get will vary. If you are paid four weekly there will be one month in a year where 2 pay days fall in the assessment period and that could wipe out any UC for that month. You need to plan/ estimate what you will be paid and how it will affect UC. people need to get away from thinking it is similar to tax credit with a monthly payment.

Babyroobs · 23/11/2019 16:28

If you need to pay childcare upfront it is worth enquiring at the job centre whether the flexible fund can help with the first months childcare fees. People often aren't told about this.

AnotherEmma · 23/11/2019 16:31

Unfortunately the job centre advisers don't know much about UC or if they do, they certainly don't explain it to claimants!

So you need to educate yourself. There is loads of info about UC here:
www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/

Shesalittlemadam · 23/11/2019 16:36

@UCnightmare9 The council WILL provide you with 'Discretionary payments' whilst waiting for/having issues with universal credit. They did it for me in 2016. It's the only thing they will help with post-UC. Call your council on Monday.

Themrknow · 24/11/2019 17:24

This is a easy reply on reading your article I see that you have claimed uc during your assessment time yes I can confirm that if you had not done this till after your pay date of your wages you would of got a payment what I would suggest is applying through your account for a advance payment which will cover your bills and rent depending on your circumstances I know alot about uc and how it works if you get stuck contact me and il help you

AnimalRescuer247 · 24/11/2019 20:13

Maybe you missed it in her post?.... But she did tell us she was in hospital for several wks & spent all her savings bcz she didn receive any sick pay? And assuming she's now well enough to work, It usually takes at least a week to find a job, apply for & be interviewed for it then another week to find out if she was successful... then work a month in hand if she is .... What do u suggest she eat or survive on till then? And I'm sure you're not suggesting she break the law by avoiding paying tax by being paid "under the table" are u?

AnimalRescuer247 · 24/11/2019 20:31

If it were that simple, there wouldn't have been almost 2 million food parcels given out just last year, a million of those going to children lol. And If she's not allowed to make a new claim and has claimed a few days too early so missing out on anything again for another month, then what? It's OK when it's happening to someone else, but when u haven't a single penny to your name,no family to help, the risk of losing your roof over your head & no idea where your next meals coming from,u wouldn't be so chipper abt it like in your comment, trust me....

goodluckhun · 29/11/2019 23:17

Hey OP, what happened when you called up? Hope things are ok xxx
