Mortgage advisors/ brokers

I'm due to remortgage next April and know I need to get thinking about it sooner rather than later- particularly once Christmas is over.

I need some advice as I want to shorten the term. Last time I used the person suggested by my estate agents which wasn't brilliant as I was charged a fee. Is this usual? I used them as I'd split with my ex and needed help in applying for a sole mortgage.

My financial situation is much improved now and I have hardly any debt.

Who do I look for to remortgage

Being charged a fee isn't that unusual for a broker and they will generally have access to slightly better rates than going direct to the lender. We're currently remortgaging as we're coming to the end of a five year fix and whilst I could go direct to the bank, my broker's rate is a fraction lower that whilst I pay a fee, it still works out much cheaper over the term.
