Hey ladies,

Im new here and a mum of 2 a girl and a boy ive just signed up to universal credit just to cover my housing costs im newly self employed ive just started a buisness venture and opened up an online clothing boutique. I also live in temporary accommodation

so what the problem is i applied for universal credit, i was previously getting tax credits for the kids and now ive missed a payment this morning from tax credits. I called up and they told me i am no longer entitled and I can never re apply again because i applied for universal credit
Universal credit also told me im not entitled because i live in temporary accommodation. I am now left with absolutely no money as i was expecting the usual payment from tax credits today.

Now can someone advise me on what to do and tell me more about universal credits as i really dont understand all this or whats going on and it has really suprised me that my kids will no longer be entitled to their benefits. I used all my savings in starting my buisness venture and as its very new im not generating much income. This whole experience has really humbled me and taught me a harsh lesson. :(

Anyone can tell me more about universal credit what to expect e.t.c xx

Thank you!xox

Hi I just googled and found this I presume you should still be entitled to the child element but not the housing.

Apply for housing benefit online with your district council and ask them at the end (they’ll be a box to add any other information) that you were told to claim UC for housing needs and they have informed you’re not able to as living in TA

Give them the date you claimed UC and got turned down for the housing element

But you still need to claim UC and can state you’re self employed

As you live in temporary accommodation you would have needed to make a claim for Housing benefit.

When you make a claim for UC all of your legacy benefits (tax credits, jsa etc) are cancelled from the date you claimed UC and you close off your entitlement to these benefits with a UC claim.

You can still claim UC for the child element and HB for your housing costs.

I would book an appointment with welfare rights or cab to help get your claims sorted.

You were given wrong advice you should have claimed housing benefit and you would have still received tax credits. Who told you to apply for UC?

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/01/2019 18:16

Tax credits are also wrong if you are not entitled to UC it’s one of the few circumstances you can reapply for tax credits.

YourFly · 26/01/2019 18:17

You might get it on Monday?

Bumblebee39 · 26/01/2019 18:18

You should be entitled to an advance payment if you're entitled to UC?

Bumblebee39 · 26/01/2019 18:19

They will cancel your tax credits immediately if you apply for UC yes. Are you sure you would have still been entitled to tax credits? Had you told them you are now self employed?

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/01/2019 18:19

However you are entitled to UC just not housing so you will get child payments. Really bad you weren’t told you could stay in tax credits though.
