Ooh Eatingcheeseontoast I've currently got a starter on the go that I think will be ready to bake with tomorrow. I was going to use Paul Hollywood's recipe but I don't have a proofing basket.
How do you do it?

Eatingcheeseontoast · 14/02/2017 08:18

I'm using Laura harts recipe from the telegraph website. But keep over proofing the dough as trying to fit it in round work. My starter is quite lively now which made the last loaf the best I think.

I used a floured tea towel in a colander instead of a proving basket. Seemed fine.

Shop bought scones are vile. Too much bicarbonate.

If you compare like for like quality wise homemade is cheaper. You can buy a chocolate cake very cheaply, but it will taste a bit synthetic and not really chocolately. A homemade cake will be more expensive than the cheapest cake you can buy, but cheaper than a high quality cake made with "proper" ingredients iyswim. Especially if you avoid brand names etc for ingredients - value dark chocolate is fine for baking.

I make my own bread (Bread maker kneads it but I cook it in the oven as it's nicer that way) and it probably costs about 50p a loaf. Plus energy costs to make it, but still not that expensive. Lidl bread flour and instant yeast is quite cheap.

I don't add seeds. Round is easier to do than oval.

mammymammyIRL · 14/02/2017 08:41

I mainly eat brown, will try them out.

Thanks

Cake isn't worth it, fuel costs. Discourage cake eating by buying only when needed, and that way you can also lose the baking clutter.

Easiest bread recipe in the world and dirt cheap:
