I think yesterday is best described as 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'

It started off so well. The weather forecast was good so we decided to do a healthy hike and then head to the beach. We got up early and packed a big picnic -actually, DH did all that while I stared bleary eyed into my coffee-. Frugal and healthy so far, eh? What could go wrong?

We drove to Wicklow and ascended The Sugarloaf mountain. I almost gave up about half-way up but promised myself coffee and cake if I made it to the summit. I was very proud of myself when we got to the top and the views the whole way up were amazing. We almost made off with a dog when we were leaving The Sugarloaf car park - a lovely lab jumped into the boot of our car and made a little bed for himself in amongst the bags and hiking boots etc. Smile

Then we drove to a town called Arklow because I'd seen an ad for a festival. We wandered around for a while taking in the sights and sounds. We spent €2.55 on ice creams and €12 on the fairground rides - €3 per ride x 2 rides x 2 people. The sun was getting very intense at this point and we couldn't drive off as our car was blocked in (they'd closed off some of the roads for the festival). DD was complaining that she was getting a headache so we went in search of a cafe so we could get out of the sun for a while. We had some coffees and cake and DD had a smoothie and a crepe. DH paid but I'd say we easily spent about €20.

There was a shopping centre at the back of the cafe and I was lured into Next by some Sale signs. I bought 2 tops for €8.50 each and DH got a set of shirts and tie for €24 (half price). DD was feeling a bit left out so I went into New Look with her and she got a pair of floral dungarees and white top for €27.98. Unfortunately, there was no sale on in New Look so we paid full price for her things. I haven't bought many clothes for her this year as she's mostly still fitting into her summer clothes from last year.

The roads were re-opening at this stage so we drove to a nearby beach (a bit later than intended). €4 for parking - I thought it was a bit mean that they charged us full price when we were only going to be there for the evening. Anyway, it was one of those rare evenings when it was still warm even thought it had clouded over by this stage. DH and DD had a swim and I paddled a bit and had a nice walk along the beach. We finally had our picnic about 7 and left the beach about 8.30 p.m.

I guessed we'd spent somewhere between €60 or €80 and was a bit shocked to tot it up and discover that we actually spent over €100 Shock. A perfect illustration of how you can fritter away large sums of money in a matter of hours.

In a way I don't regret it because it was a lovely day and we made the most of it. We certainly packed a lot in. We will use the clothes so at least we have something to show for our money. But we really should have stuck to our original plan of hike and beach which would have cost us very little.

Moral of the story - steer clear of festivals and shops and cafes.

Having a quiet day today and taking advantage of another lovely day to do some laundry. I'm safe with laundry, right? Smile

Ahoy there Welcome, Pirate! :o

Thank you so much re: the bees Trying that's really kind of you :) :)

I'm not feeling very motivated today. But I've realised that I've become a lot better at cobbling together meals (yesterday's rice noodle stir fry went down surprisingly well with the Caglets) and also I've not spent much online lately other than DS' birthday presents and some sports activities for the holidays. So I think I'm doing ok frugaleering-wise. We did have a takeaway the other day (in the interests of full disclosure I thought I should mention it!) - wasn't amazing but wasn't disappointing either IYSWIM.

Possibly TMI, sorry, but does anyone here keep track of their cycle? I've only ever tracked my actual period start day, but TBH I'm getting a bit concerned as they are getting more drawn out. Somebody mentioned I may not be ovulating, so I thought maybe I should track it. Not that we're TTC! But I may need to see a GP in case it's something dodgy. I'm overdue a smear test actually, ugh. AF is now over a week late, which is virtually unheard of for me - I even POAS. No idea what's going on as it was negative. Anyway, I don't actually know where to start re: tracking it all. Any thoughts?

Ah Tayto that does sound like a lovely day! But yes it is truly terrifying how quickly it all adds up.

lilacclery · 18/07/2016 12:52

cag have you a smart phone? I downloaded app 'Clue' to my iphone and it's great. Will perform averages etc tell you when next cycle is due and you can tell it how heavy or light etc

tayto that sounds like a lovely day out, except for the clothes they were all small spends and as you said they'll be used again.

Most of the beaches over on south west coast have free parking, pity that ye have to pay to park there, you too wreck

Tomorrow is meant to be the hottest day this year. I'm debating taking a half day. Dd in camp until 1pm

Ememem84 · 18/07/2016 13:10

cag I do I do!! I've downloaded an ap called FMC you can input all sorts of data. So far it's worked ok.

Free menstrual calender I think.

WreckTangled · 18/07/2016 13:22

Yes no free parking here! The dc want to go. I'm happy to go but want to go somewhere fun any ideas?!

ipsogenix · 18/07/2016 13:44

Tayto that does sound like a lovely day though. Lots of happy memories. :-)

No idea what that could be Cag but I do try to keep track. (Not always successfully.)

I've been frugalleering in the garden today. I had this plan to spend a bunch of money to get it fixed, but it's looking more and more as if it will make sense just to get out there with a spade.

I wonder if B&Q will do those £1 grobags this year? They were great before. I could do with a bunch more of those. I realised that given the choice between £1300 patio and 1300 grobags, there was really no contest. I'd rather have the good soil to grow things in. (Not 1300 bags obviously, but maybe a few.)

Cagliostro · 18/07/2016 14:25

Thanks folks. I should've mentioned I don't have anything to put an app on! When I had an iPhone I used a period tracker app, which was quite good except it estimated your ovulation for you. Whereas I think I want to know the exact date really. If it is all going a bit funny, I'd know then.

I'd had a thread about it a few months ago, somebody mentioned stress can actually stop you ovulating. Obviously things were stressful earlier this year but actually things are pretty good at the moment so I'm not sure that adds up. Plus I've always been absolutely like clockwork even when incredibly stressed before. Or maybe this is just yet another thing to chalk up to the CFS/fibro etc. But better to check I figured. I did have an ultrasound sometime in the last couple of years, but that found nothing unusual apart from the fact that my uterus is back-to-front! Blush

Don't it's 30&31 July.
If you are on Facebook it's called Yorkshire dales food and drink festival. I think it's on at the cattle market

Sierra259 · 18/07/2016 16:38

Hello everyone! Been a manic few days so just going to catch up on the thread properly.

AdoraBell · 18/07/2016 17:09

Blush I might have spent £30 ordering perfume

ipsogenix · 18/07/2016 17:38

Cag I just have a paper diary from WHSmiths and I use the calendar page at the beginning and circle the once-a-month date so I know when it was. I then work out how many day are in each cycle and count forward that number of days to figure out when the next one is expected. It works just fine. I also don't have a smart phone.

Cagliostro · 18/07/2016 17:43

That's all I've been doing Ipso (well, sometimes I forget to actually write it down, but I do know when to expect it IYSWIM and therefore if I'm late) - I think I can tell when I ovulate though (due to pain) so I may start writing that too.

Tsk, Adora :o

Had a quick dig round the Caglets' room and found some things for them to look through. The toys will just be donated but a few of my local home ed friends have been successfully selling books lately, so I'll definitely give that a go with the books. Makes me a bit sad seeing how many books they're outgrowing though! Blush

Cagliostro · 18/07/2016 17:43

That is, if they actually agree to get rid of any of the blasted things at all! :o

£15 on six jars of peanut butter from Amazon. The kids are dairy free and hard to get fat and protein in so we eat a lot of naice peanut butter.

Spent some time in the garden this afternoon but it was just too hot. It has, however, meant I have done six loads of laundry. Fresh beds for us all!

Cagliostro · 18/07/2016 19:05

Wow 6! Well done :o

DD just got back from her first try of a girls' basketball group. Positive verdict. Thankfully it's PAYG so no need to sign up long term :)

lilacclery · 18/07/2016 19:06

Thanks for the push here regarding cc, I got approved for 0% transfer for 6 months! Transferring my smaller balance as I wish to hang on to my Tesco one. There's 4% cashback for first 3 months on spends up to a max of €120, thinking I could put my groceries through on it to earn this.

lilacclery · 18/07/2016 19:07

Obviously with a payment immediately from joint account to cover the spend

Cagliostro · 18/07/2016 19:08

Excellent Lilac! :)

Tryingtosaveup · 18/07/2016 19:28

Ipso, when I moved in here the soil was hard clay. I went on Freecycle and asked for topsoil. I got lots. I had to go and collect it....about 20 mins. I have a small trailer so I filled that. It's worth a try. They were glad to be rid of it as they were having a patio put down.
I have dug sections of the lawn up and am making raised beds for veggies.

Sierra259 · 18/07/2016 19:31

All caught up now! Well done ipso on your race and need DD and pony. Hope you start to feel better soon babs

Bit of a spendy day here as our microwave conked out last night Sad We use it so much for sterilising bottles and heating/defrosting food so had to replace asap. Fortunately had some John Lewis vouchers so decided to use those, and it ended up only costing £30 on top of that. Good points on the JL card, so should give me a free tea and cake too! Will have to spend £25 tomorrow for replacement buggy wheels as one has split. It has had very good use between DC1 and 2 so don't really mind, and I plan to offer it to my sister who's expecting at the end of the year if she wants it. Off to put the DC to bed then spag bol for tea - le yum, as em would say! Grin

Tryingtosaveup · 18/07/2016 19:35

£23.43 in Aldi today because have friends visiting for a few days. I think their salmon pieces are really good value.
DP is coming tomorrow as well ( we live apart....works well....best way for a relationship for me as I need my own space) and he will bring more food.
I think I have finally saved up enough to have the small bathroom redone. It leaks a bit and, overall is disgusting...well I think it is.
It has been very hard going. I have done extra work ( so knackered), and sold anything that is not nailed down. And cut household bills carefully and watched pennies. Whew! Hope it has been worth it.

Tryingtosaveup · 18/07/2016 19:37

Lilac, do look carefully at the T&Cs for that cc. Some of the 0% ones start charging if you spend on the card....that's what money saving expert says. It is worth checking because some of them are bast*s.
