Spotty DS is 10.5 and when tired he has always "twiddled" with his hair, basically grabbing some hair a nd twisting around and around. About a year ago he developed a bald patch about the size of a 10p. We just call him on it each time he starts playing with it. I thought we had broken the habit, but he has started again. Sad

Ladies, DS is really feeling sad at the moment, the school have commented that he has low self esteem and he doesn't have a "best" friend.. They think he will be better when he moves to secondary school, when it isn't all about football in the playground. He is quite nerdy, and can be a know it all, and I think this attitude puts people off. It is another 6 months until he moves schools, what can I do to help him?

AuditAngel · 22/03/2015 08:19

Oops, I forgot, after lunch with a friend yesterday I gavemy friend £13 to get 2 huge pizzas from the cash and carry for DD1's sleepover for her birthday next weekend.

Obviously I'll get a cake, we'll have hot dogs for lunch, and pasta on Saturday for lunch. DD1 is desperate for a midnight feast, so I'll suss out what she wants (within reason) for that. Maybe some ice cream?

SpottyTeacakes · 22/03/2015 08:24

What about making friends outside of school? Any clubs he could join?

Ds' bald patch is the size of a mango Sad he's only two so doesn't understand it's from twiddling too.

squigglehead · 22/03/2015 08:51

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :)

Had some annoying news this morning, something I sold worth £200 is lost in the post on the way to Italy, and when I went to find the postage receipt its not there :( I put my address on the back so hopefully it will eventually find its way to one of us! Otherwise I'm out £200...

Yesterday was supposed to be a NSD but ended up booking the hotel for a friends wedding in September to take advantage of a cheap deal so £118.60 (two nights for the three of us) down... Good think she's a good friend Grin

NSD today as I feel grotty and DH is painting our bedroom :)

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 22/03/2015 09:14

Hello all Smile dropped off thread as things were crazy at work.

We've had a quote of £1200 and another of £1600 to fix the damage I caused to DH's car Blush trying to decide whether to fix or sell it now.

I've been buying new clothes, mainly basic cardigans and tops, but I have been strict and only bought things I love, have returned a few when I became unsure.

Have also spent quite a bit on some supplements and health foods after seeing a nutritionist, she's based in America and saw me over Skype which meant that she had no vested interest in recommending the products as I bought them in a local store here in UK not off her. Hoping they help.

I'm on a healthy eating drive, using MFP to track calories as I'm finding all my clothes tight etc.

Off to Greece on school trip on weds, that will stop me spending as its a pre planned tour and we will spend all the time in museums etc.

Breadandwine · 22/03/2015 10:28

AuditAngel, why not make the pizzas? 70p each, roughly, for a cheese and tomato pizza.

They're dead easy to make - get DD to help you and you'll have a lot of fun together!

Everyone on a budget should be making their own bread.

frazzled74 · 22/03/2015 10:34

Can someone post me a foolproof bread recipe please? I saw one on here that was a soda bread/no yeast, but can't find it now. Also where do you put dough to rise? My kitchen is freezing, no airing cupboard, so my yeast never seems to work .

girliefriend · 22/03/2015 10:36

Audit that is sad re your son, I would second making friends outside of school, joining a few clubs? Has he got a mate at school that you could invite back for tea one day?

Really hoping for a nsd today, not had one all week Blush that said we are going to a giant camping type shop as my mum has promised to buy dd a new sleeping bag prior to a school camp she is going on. Will try hard to resist buying anything else like a new coat for me!!

Flip MissA thats not cheap!!

I need to get on and get some more quotes for sorting the bathroom out, decided to not go with the £900 one as feel it was too much, I reckon between £700-£800 is more reasonable.

Is there anything i can do (other than getting a water metre) to argue that my water bill is too high? i have tried ringing them up and they say the bills are worked out on historic guesswork on how much properties will use Hmm I am currently paying £56 a month for a 2 bed council flat Shock I can't afford it. Will look at getting a metre once we get a shower but at the moment have daily baths sometimes 2 a day as I bath in the morning and dd in the evening iyswim. Would a metre still be cheaper do you think?

girliefriend · 22/03/2015 10:37

Audit can you not mke the cake as well? Wink How old is your dd? I made my dd a treasure island cake for her 9th bday and it was really easy!!

SpottyTeacakes · 22/03/2015 10:53

Girlie there's four of us in a two bed house and our water (on and off meter) is almost £20pcm cheaper than that.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 22/03/2015 11:11

Bread recipe:
50g flour -can use strong or any sr really
1tsp easy actipn yeast
300ml warm water (tap is fine)
Some people add pinch of salt and/or honey but I dont bother.

Mix all together in bowl until it firms a ball then pop onto a board to knead. I put a tiny amount of oil on the board and smear it all over with my hands - board isn't sticky, hands aren't sticky and you dont end up adding more flour to your mixture.

Pop bank in bowl, cover with teatowel and leave for at least an hour. It will rise fine in a cold kitchen (puts us freezing).

Turn onto board and knead a bit more. Shape and put into greased load tin. Cover and leave 30 mins. Meantime heat oven to 230.

After second rise, pop in over for 35-40 mins and its done. Turn out of tin when its hot onto a wooden board.

500g flour, not 50!

frazzled74 · 22/03/2015 12:13

Thanks for bread recipe, will give it another go.

LaChatte · 22/03/2015 12:36

This is my favourite bread recipe by a mile (Paul Hollywood's stout bread recipe).

LaChatte · 22/03/2015 12:53

Still no sign of life from Asos, they owe me €59 Angry

I've sent them an email, hope they answer asap, and more to the point, that they refund me pdq.

NSD today

5 days to payday...

nochocolateforlentteacake · 22/03/2015 14:16

You can get big bags of flour from larger supermarkets. I'm not sure how much cheaper it really is than a cheap store loaf - pretty sure it us for pizzas though.

CremeEggThief · 22/03/2015 14:30

£33.63 on grocery shopping at Tesco, including two Easter eggs for £3 each.

Meal plan this week:
Today: veggie toad-in-the-hole with mash, broccoli, peas and gravy. Chocolate trifle for pudding.
Tomorrow: same.
Tuesday: jackets with cheese, coleslaw and salad.
Wednesday : Quorn and veg stir fry in black bean sauce and noodles.
Thursday : veggie burgers and wedges.
Friday: pizza.

Better go and put the veg on, as the toad-in-the-hole is almost ready!Smile

Can someone post me a foolproof bread recipe please? I saw one on here that was a soda bread/no yeast, but can't find it now. Also where do you put dough to rise? My kitchen is freezing, no airing cupboard, so my yeast never seems to work .

Simple soda bread:
1 mug s/r flour
1/4 tsp salt (optional)
1/3 mug cold water

Mix into a fairly soft dough (the softer the better - but you do have to be able to handle it), knead (flatten and fold) it half a dozen times then shape into a flattish round.

Place on a prepared baking sheet (either oiled or lined with baking paper), put a deep cross in the loaf, then whack it in the oven - 200/220c or gas 7 - for around 15-20 minutes.

It's done when:
There is a good colour underneath
A skewer (or a tsp handle) comes out clean when stuck into the thickest part of the loaf
And it breaks apart cleanly

This will cost you around 5p.

For a yeast-risen loaf in a cold kitchen I'd use nochocolate's quantities above, but do away with the 2 risings. Shape the loaf as soon as the dough is smooth, then place in your oven or microwave alongside a dish of hot water.

When it's almost doubled in size put it in the oven. But I'd check after about 20 minutes - you may need to move it around or change shelves to get an even bake.

Just a reminder - yeast is often given away by Asda or Tesco, at the bakery counter, whilst Sainsbury's will sell you 50g for I think it's 19 or 20p Certainly you can get 200g for 60p. Keep any fresh yeast in a plastic bag in the fridge - any you don't think you'll use in the next two weeks, tightly wrap it in foil, in a plastic bag, and keep it on the bottom shelf of the fridge. It'll be good for a couple of months.

Whether you can get fresh yeast or not, it's a good idea to have a tin of Allinson's Dried Active yeast (the yellow tub) in your fridge. Costing 64 or 65p it's a great standby and will keep for several years. Look for it by the flour shelves.

Bread will rise in a cold place, it just takes longer.
Today should have been NSD but just treated ourselves to ice creams in the park then called in Aldi for Easter eggs and ended up spending £20 on bits and pieces like moisturizer and a raspberry plant! I have been saying I'll grow raspberries for a year though and it was only £2.99.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 22/03/2015 15:38

A Bloomer takes hours to rise but its worth it!

girliefriend · 22/03/2015 15:52

Was just thinking of a meal plan for this week!

Snap Creme toad in the hole with veg, spuds and gravy tonight.
The same tomos
Pesto pasta and salad
veggie Spag bol
veggie spag bol again!
Something from the freezer or on toast (working late)

Spent 50p on a traditional advent calendar (marked down from £3) will put away for December!

Laska4 · 22/03/2015 15:53

LSD yesterday £1.94 on tooth stain remover on ebay
