If you have a wood burning stove, where do you buy your logs etc?

Been wondering if it'd be worth out while to put the stove on when DH gets back from work to keep it nice and warm, instead of having the heating on once it gets colder. TBH, I'm unsure if it would be as by the time it gets to optimum temp we'll be starting to kill it off before going to bed.

But we would need much more logs, coal and kindling than what we usually use and we don't have the space for a shed-load of logs either...

I used to buy them from the greengrocers, 6 bags a time. I bought half a load from a local woodcutter/forestry dude (found his web site). I keep adding logs until about an hour before I go to bed. Storage wise, I keep them in the cellar now but kept the bags from the grocers in the study, they don't take up too much space. I don't use kindling now, just screwed up news paper, firelighters and a log.

We buy a load from where-evers advertised locally about £70 would probably do us a whole winter, never buy kindling just chop a couple into smaller pieces and use the old firelighter - do you have some outside storage where you could knock up a little shelter? this video will show you how to make one out of five pallets and some nails

Let enough people know you have a burner and you'll get plenty of donations. We haven't bought wood for a couple of years.

We have a garage but there's no space in it at the moment. Not to store large amounts anyway.

Might give it a try for a couple of nights, see if it works out worthwhile.

We collect wood throughout the year. There's often free wood when people chip trees down etc and PIL cut down a load a couple of years ago. They have enough to supply themselves, SIL and us for years.
I would never buy wood. We've usually got enough just by foraging.

We buy a builders bag for £35 at local solid fuel yard every so often. Keep a big stock in the garage piled up all nice. Use the oldest stuff first as it burns better the drier it is. Kiln dried stuff is definitely better, but it's a bit dear in comparison to normal logs so we don't bother.

I do think that it makes a big difference if you can store it. Some people make log stores out of pallets - you don't need to keep the logs bone dry if you have enough space somewhere undercover to do a final dry off for a day or two before you use them.

We massively benefited from last winters storms and bought a chainsaw to deal with it, we ran out of hand sawing energy! So we have logs in a wood store, in our cold frame and stacked up against a fence. I think it might see us through two winters.
