Ready Brek: £2.89 a box

Whaaaaaaat?

I ventured from Aldi to Asda to find some Asda's own Ready Brek. They had run out so I had to buy Ready Brek.

I know it's a dull post but my word, the real world of food retail (away from Aldi and LIDL) shocks me.

How do they make Ready Brek anyway? I've put oats through my food processor and it doesn't work.

It's got added shit in I think.

Ready brek is responsible for doctors not believing me that my autistic kid is a really bad eater. It's practically all he ate for 4 years.

I used up a credit note in M&S food hall, a punnet of cherries was "only £4".

I sniggered all the way round the shop and just got marked down stuff.

Dh came home with real crunchy nut cornflakes that were almost £4, I made him take them back!.I cannot believe the price of ready brek, it used to be really good value when dc were little.

I stare in disbelief at medium sized blocks of cheese that seem to be £6.

I made blended and sieved oats when dc was weaning, couldn't believe the price of baby porridge.
Sometimes I worry a bit that Aldi could up their prices one day, like Primark used to be cheap but is now the same as alot of other clothing outlets.

Also have put up a bit already

I refuse to buy branded cereal. Well over £2 for cocoa pops and corn fkakes. I buy tesco value. 83p for the pops and 31p for flakes. Real bargain.

Try Farmfoods, Heron, Poundland, Home Bargains, B&M for branded cereal. I will never ever pay full supermarket prices; they are extortionate imo.

I get my DCs to choose their cereal by telling them to look for the yellow (offer) label on the shelf and if it's a big box for less than £2 they can choose it. Keeps it varied as otherwise they would have Krave every blinking day.

and yes, I know most cereal is shit for breakfast, but they don't want eggs, kippers or quinoa porridge, so they have cereal

AFAIK Ready Brek is just finely ground oats with some added vitamins isn't it? I remember being worried about giving it to my DCs as babies as I'd heard about a child dying of malnutrition who had been weaned on RB and mash/gravy. Turns out the RB wasn't so bad after all, it was probably the salty gravy and lack of any protein/fruit/veg that had been the problem.

That baby died of salt overload not malnutrition, due to being fed instant mash and gravy at the age of 4 months

Just buy porridge oats. So cheap.

I have looked at the article again and the baby was only 3 months old and being fed high salt foods. The article seems to implicate ready brek (wrongly, as it has no added salt) rather than the instant mash and gravy and other unsuitable adult foods they were feeding him.

Thanks powerhoop, didn't mean to derail with that, it was many years ago and I couldn't remember the finer details, I just know that I was wrongly a bit scared of RB for a long time!

I know what you mean about shops other than ALDI and LIDL. We went to Waitrose the other day and spent £50 on nothing. I nearly fainted when we got to the till.

Sainsbury's own labelready brrk- tastes better and half the price... though tbh porridge oats- the least expensive option, and you can make them in the microwave
