Hi All,
I couldn't see a new thread yet, so thought I'd start one for July. The jacket potato is a marker for starting summer off on a frugal note. :).

NSD so far.

Free John Lewis tea and cake. £14 on gift for dd for good school report and birthday present for dd's friend.

CremeEggThief · 28/07/2014 20:14

Eek, incredibly spendy day! £82.15 on the bulk of DS's uniform for starting secondary (just shoes, trainers and joggers left), £29 towards new glasses, £66.90 at the vet's, £6.30 on travel and £14.50 on lunch out between all these appointment (also had the dentist- free, library, and bank), as there was no time to go home for lunch. Phew!

Hope you're feeling a bit better now, Spotty, you poor thing :(.

Asparateme artificial sweetener gives dh migraines.

Since I switched him from diet pop to sugar free squash he hasn't had a migraine.

northender · 28/07/2014 22:08

I've had another spendy day but am not feeling too glum about it as the dc are smiling! I've spent quite a bit on clothes and shoes for them as they have been managing on very little for a long time. Ds is 13 in 5 weeks and has suddenly realised that clothes other than football/cricket tops and tracky bottoms exist and has had great fun choosing a few t shirts and shorts for the holiday. Dd (9) has existed mainly in hand me downs and clothes bought by mil so far and has never complained so it has been nice to buy her a few bits too Smile

Am trying to deal with my glut of courgettes from the garden. At the moment I've got 4 courgette loaves in the oven and a huge tray of roast veg and feta which I'll put with couscous for my lunches this week. Will probably do some picallilli too and still need to have courgette fritters for lunch a few times Grin

Karbea · 28/07/2014 22:13

I spent £2 something on bread, milk and doughnuts, the doughnuts were 9p.
My feet are absolutely killing me I worked two shifts today. 6-9, and then 2-9:15. I'd asked dh to cook dinner and out it in the microwave as he was due to go out at 8 and I was due back at 8:30 ish, but as I always end up staying a bit later at work I thought it was best he cooked it all, then I just micro it, but no he put it in the oven so by the time I got home it was burnt! And he had subway for lunch! FFs I can hardly walk as my feet hurt so,much! Rant over!!!!
Anyway, so I had two of the five doughnuts for my dinner :/
I'm sooooo tired!

£1.77 or something on loom band charms on amazon. Can't stop treating the kids. ..but they were so good today, behaved themselves while I worked from home so that saved me £70 ish in childcare, so they deserve a few charms eh.

Hope you're feeling better spotty

Iamnotanugget · 29/07/2014 06:08

pass, and everyone really, I try not to treat the dc all the time as I think I might be creating bad habits for them. I worry that they'll think they can always have 'stuff' and end up with credit cars debt. OR am I just mean and by with holding stuff will the ability to finally buy anything they want, when they want with the 'free money' a credit card offers mean that by 20 they are heavily in debt?

Anyone got any insight?

Sorry that it's badly written, I'm juggking hungry baby and toddler that wants my attention but I'm too tired to give Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/07/2014 07:01

ohhelp I would have yes. That's nearly two packs of tea bags! Grin

AuditAngel · 29/07/2014 07:04

Yesterday £9 towards a take away, DH paid the rest.

NK5BM3 · 29/07/2014 07:16

Nugget, I don't think you are being mean. I think there needs to be some sort of savings in place. Even if it's a pound a week or whatever.

In my culture and home country, it's very common for people to be given money for birthdays, Christmas, new year etc and because you basically get money from all the aunties, uncles, and older family members, you usually end up with a few hundred in your pocket! My mother used to take it off us and put it in a savings account. I used to also save up in a Mickey Mouse thing and when it was full of coins, we'd bring it to the bank, and the till operator will empty it into the machine and it was great! The bank book was credited!

Anything else we needed, clothes, shoes, books, music lessons etc was paid for by mum anyway. So by the time I was 18, I had quite a substantial amount in my bank account.

I've had credit cards, but I've never really had debt beyond the mortgage and the time we spent £20K on the wedding. But even then, where possible we stuck things on the interest free accounts.

Dh on the other hand, although is very frugal, for various reasons (family mostly), did not have any sense of money. So when we met, I had to start educating him.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 29/07/2014 07:56

NSD yesterday.

I don't think you're being mean nugget. My mum was quite strict with treats etc and it did us no harm. (I've never really had debt except student debt and one credit card that got to about £3000 before I realised it was spiralling and paid it down within 3 or 4 months - the debt we're paying off now was all made my DH without my knowledge)

all my siblings are pretty good with money and not too materialistic, although I am sure more treats wouldn't have hurt us either!

Passthecake30 · 29/07/2014 08:57

nugget so long as you have the right balance.

My kids know they can't have everything, money is limited and we have to make choices. They also know we work for our money, so if they want more, they see us less ifykwim. Saying that I do tend to get them odds and sods from the pound shop- maybe a couple of bits a month or the loom band bits from amazon as I really resented my parents for being "mean", we had amazing holidays but nothing in between and it's stuck with me. Obviously when they are old enough to budget and go shopping with their own pocket money I will stop...but for now I won't beat myself up over the water shooter, , notepad, copious loom bands and loom band charms (purchases made over the last month or so)

Iamnotanugget · 29/07/2014 13:45

I know what you mean pass. I want the dcs to enjoy childhood but they just can't have everything.

And I hate loom bands!!!! They are taking over my home. Nothing spent today so far but going to get some baking ingredients now.

Makingchanges · 29/07/2014 14:37

No spend day so far today as I have been laid on the settee with a migraine. My own fault. I take tablets every evening to prevent migraines but can't take them with alcohol and so haven't taken them the last few nights and no have a migraine. I will never learn. Don't know who mentioned Imigran but I also take these when I have a migraine. I get two packets of 6 every 2 months for the cost of a prescription and have them on repeat. This is because I was under the consultant for migraines and had to beg for an increase but even so I was able to get them at 1 packet of 6 for a prescription cost so if you are prone to migraines and they relieve them, try getting your doctor to prescribe them. I have to carry them in every bag as I get so many migraines and we don't know the cause.

Anyway, no spend day won't last as we have run out of toilet roll so when DH takes DD to swimming lessons I have off to the shop - Bread, eggs and toilet roll and that is it. (or that's the plan at least)

SpottyTeacakes · 29/07/2014 14:52

Ohhelp no I haven't as this is the first migraine I've had in four years! Hopefully it'll be the last one for a while.

£15 for colleagues leaving do next week.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/07/2014 16:50

£2.85 in sainsburys on food I didn't really need.

£1 on a bow for a present.

£10 petrol.

Passthecake30 · 29/07/2014 18:04

£2 in pound shop...clips for dd as she keeps losing them and is growing out some of her fringe so needs them...and a 4 pack of dime bars all for ME!

Plus the usual travel.

On my way to tescos to pick up picnic bits for legoland ...I want "interesting" things not just sarnies, crisps and fruit. ..plus I need to get snacks for in between.

Karbea · 29/07/2014 18:45

£4 for me today, a courgette, jar of dried chives, ham and Parmesan.
I took a sandwich into work today for my lunch and did 2hrs overtime. DH had his haircut so what with ot and my £4 we are -£9.98 down on the week and I'm knackered!
Tonight we are having this, and looking at the recipe I don't need chives, gawd knows why I thought I did :( oh well, I guess they'll last a while! So the salmon is out of the freezer, new courgette/Parmesan, rest all store cupboard stuff.
I'm also going to do garlic bread, the bread is one if those part baked loaves and going to make the garlic butter myself.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/07/2014 19:10

£10 payg mobile top up. I'm going to make that last all year or until they tell me to top up or they are going to disconnect me.

NK5BM3 · 29/07/2014 19:15

NSD. Brought lasagne to work for me and for colleague who I was working with. Brought drinks, crisps etc.

Tonight we had stir fried rice - kids had that. Also made sausage bean casserole this morning in the slow cooker and it's yums. Maybe lunch tomorrow.

NSD today.

Yesterday, I was Angry because my mobile bill was nearly £50. I phoned up to complain because it's usually £11ish. After a lot of to and fro, they have agreed to give me a £15 credit for next month and I bagged a good deal for a new one year contract as well. I also spent £13 on handwriting books for DS on ebay ( I have seen it normally between £23 and £35) and £70 on activities week for this week. He is costing me a fortune at the moment. Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/07/2014 20:54

Spotty

Did you switch to first direct? How long would you say the cashback takes to come through?.

My first switch failed because its a business account I'm switching from so they are doing it again.
