Renting out stuff you own - anyone done this?

Hi - I was wondering if anyone had had any success with renting out household items that they own?

According to this article last year, it was going to be the next big thing, but when I look at the websites involved, they seem to have pretty low traffic!

I found out today that my contract isn't being renewed and so will be out of work for a while and am trying to think of ways to generate some cash. I've got a load of professional-level camera equipment and wondered if renting it out would work. In theory, it could be a really good idea and am sure there would be some takers, but I'm not sure if the concept has ever really got off the ground.
