I've just 'predicted' my bill with British Gas (we only moved in June, first time having dual fuel) our average daily spend looks like this:

Gas this quarter

£1.10 (23 kWh/day)

Electricity this quarter

£2.02 (13 kWh/day)

Anyone know if this is good/bad/average? 3 bed house, only the central heating is gas everything else is electric, thermostat is set at 18, heating comes on for 2hrs in morning and 3hrs in evening (timer)

I'm on meters here... Pre payment. That's about what we use. Slightly less in elec. 5 bed house over 3 storeys. No tumble drier!

The electric seems a bit high, £60 a month.

Do you really need a timer for the heating? Mines not on now but I'm wearing thermals so I'm toasty.

The timer is so it comes on before we get up so we are warm after showers need to get draught excluders as thebheat just vanishes as soon as the heat goes off again

We were about £98pcm at our old house on average through the year. Have come home and made thenkids scrambled egg and toast for tea. Haven't switched tv/pc on tho and lights are all off. We were on holiday a fortnight ago so home all day which is why i thibk its a tad higher than ot should be plus we have put the heating on

that's twice the electricity used in this house - is your hot water on it too?

big things: tumble drier, oven, old-school lightbulbs, cooker. Medium things: Washing machine, dishwasher, shower. Smaller things; chargers, gadgets etc

simple cuts: shorter showers (if electric), turn off oven 10 mins before end of cooking time (or more), ditto electric rings.

That sounds a lot for electric. We only tend to go over £2 a day on a Sunday, when I cook a roast, make soup at lunchtime, and wash and tumble dry at least 2 loads of washing. Most days we spend 60p or so on electric if I don't do any washing and cook a quick meal. We are electric for everything, just have a gas boiler.

ive used 12kwph (10 daytime 2 nightime) since I posted this yesterday so 30 odd hrs. I am unsure abput the gas as I cba going out in the rain

We use lamps at night x3 rather than 1 ceiling light. A wash every day usually but dried on pulley and clothes horse usually (drier use only once per week on avg). i have urned the thermostat down another degree (i had felt a bit cooler but no one else seems to) and sorted the timer to shave an hr off a day

are you on economy 7? Can you make better use of it, e.g running the washing machine at night? If not, might be worth changing tariff.

How big your house, and are you heating all of it? If getting out of the shower is the problem, have heating on for one hour, and switch off all but the bathroom radiator. If people don't get up and washed in that time, they can get cold, and try harder tomorrow! We haven't had the heating on in the mornings (except one) since April.

Its a 3 bed end terraced upstairs/downstairs. I don't think we are on economy 7, contracted in to current 'deal' --hahahahaha- until June (Clear & Simple with BG).

So we were obviously using less last quarter (electricity) I wasn't using dryer at all in summer months obviously so I assume dryer is a biggy here

Mil is on that tariff afaik, she has night units too. I wouldn't fancy leaving tumble driers on overnight though.

Noooo i even freak plugging my phone in over night i am not even sure what time the night one runs

Blimey we pay nearly £150 a month for electricity.

We do have electric gates on a shared estate driveway. Probably eating our money.

Jeepers, littleredsquirrel, are all your neighbours 'sharing' your mains supply?

the clear and simple tariff doesn't appear to be economy 7 - but you differentiate between day and night units which implies that you do. Please ring BG and find out what you are paying per unit and when.

you can leave things running over night but they should always have a smoke alarm in range. If you aren't using the economy 7 night rate then change it, as the day rate is pricier than otherwise.

Its ridiculous isn't it Brownsaucesandwich. I can't possibly see how we use so much and its double what we paid when we first moved in here. But unfortunately we live at the top of a private driveway and the driveway belongs to our property. Both the electric gates at the top and those at the bottom belong to our property. There are about seven houses but also a cricket club so the driveway gets a reasonable amount of use at the weekends in particular. If ever we just leave the gates open we get complaints about security.
