Which is cheaper - Tesco value range or Lidl?

We have both shops near us. I started shopping at Lidl, but have found myself switching back to Tesco as I was finding many of the value stuff was cheaper. (Don't buy value meat though, buy Tesco own for that). However, recently, I have been handed those little vouchers at the till because I would have spent less if I'd shopped at a competitor store (which I find really annoying because it means I've failed in my task to get cheap shopping).

What has anyone else found? Tesco value or Lidl????

I would choose Lidl for okay quality 'cheapness' ?

I find that some of their products are much nicer than own brand/value ranges.

I am a bit fussy with certain items, such as ham, and bacon. But most other things I find as good as and often better than supermarket ranges.

The pricepoint in veggies is worth making the trip for.

I would definitely say Lidl.

ive just started shopping at lidl - we reduced our usual tesco shop from £120 to about £65 at lidl - and the quality is brilliant.

i would say lidl is better for the quality of the goods for the price. Tesco value tends to be what you would expect for value goods - lidl not so.

i have to travel to get to a lidl but am doing it weekly now - i am thrilled with the quality for the price.

I would say lidl too, or an aldi if you have one. We have both and aldi is cheaper for veg.

Depends on the product. I bought a bottle of (Value) curry sauce at Tesco for 18p last week. I don't think Lidl would beat that.

I shop at both shops depending what I need.

Thank you everyone - I think I will take your advice and go full out at Lidl again. I would love to find a market for the fruit and veg, too, but all we have is a farmers market, where prices are on a par with organic Waitrose!

Are the Lidl baked beans ok? DH is a bit fussy and I've only just weaned him off Heinz...

Tesco value is awful quality most of it is bland and lacks flavour. Lidl is lovely and as cheap or nearly as cheap as Tesco value.

Lidl and aldi

I like lidl beans, dh doesn't but he likes aldi ones.

I am going against the grain and saying Tesco. I must be doing something wrong as I don't find Lidl or Aldi cheaper.

I get the money off vouchers for when it is cheaper elsewhere which saves more on the next shop. I also like Tesco as I collect the clubcard points for days out which we wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.

I find I spend less in Lidl simlpy because our one is smaller and they don't use dodgy tactics like moving things around every 5 minutes, or BOGOF offers that aren't that good value. I can take my list, know which aisle I need to go to and then just buy what I need without impulse buying. I tend to not need to go back to do a to up sho either if I go to Lidl. I don't know why. It may be because the veg is is much bigger bags so i always think either I can do a veggie dish or add some veggies to something I already have whereas if I run out of veg, I go into Tesco again and end u spending another £30!

Yep, DP and DCs can't tell the difference between Aldi and proper Weetabix. Or coco pops.
Their version of Krave also goes down well!

agree lidl is cheaper because there is less opportunity for unplanned spending.

I buy some things in bulk that they don't sell / are randomly.ore expensive for (eg kitchen towel) and shop there for all pasta, tins, fruit and beg. Meat from the butcher when I want it and only for one or two specific planned meals. I find I spend less than when I just stuck some mince in the trolley then think what to do with it.

My DH quite likes Lidl Weetabix. He says they are quite firm in milk. My DS scoffs it down, so assume he doesn't know the difference either! I hate Weetabix, so don't know! They also do good offers on the proper stuff sometimes, so you can get a massive 48 biscuit box quite cheaply

LIDL and ALDI every time.

I shopped in Tesco the other day and thought it was more expensive. All the different offers were doing my head in. I spend far too much time in Tesco trying to work out what a decent deal is. In ALDI and LIDL you normally have one product (i.e. tinned sweetcorn) and it is the same price week in week out unless it is on offer and the price is cut - none of this BOGOF, five for the price of four rubbish. I just don't trust Tesco at all...

Try doing your shop online at mysupermarket.co.uk first then printing the list and talking it to lidl. Then you can compare prices. That website will let you compare prices with tesco, asda and sainsburys but not lidl or aldi. I look for bargains at tesco then print my list and see if I can do better at Aldi. If not I then go to tesco. Hope that makes sense!

Surely going from one store to the other in order to get the cheapest prices is costing money in time and petrol.

It depends on the location, I live near a retail park with aldi, iceland, morrisons, sainsburys and lidl all near to each other.

I can alter my route home to pass a Tescos/Asda some days.

Not all all. They are next door to each other. It does take time to prep the list but after that it quicker because about half is done in Aldi where you don't have to stand looking at a billion choices.

Orange - I used to do that and got very proficient at it, but it did mean that my shopping was taking about 4 hours! (doing the list online, then going to both stores) - and no matter how hard I tried, my "topping up at Tesco" with the stuff that came out cheaper than Lidl still meant that I succumbed to Tesco's wicked ways and ended up buying stuff I didn't have on my list.

Yesterday, I did my whole shop at Lidl for the first time. Some things, like cereal, were more expensive as I normally get value range stuff, but even so, the final shop for the week came to £70, including washing liquid and bulk toilet rolls which will keep us going for weeks. That's for 4 of us . I'm pretty pleased.
