takeaway2 · 23/06/2013 07:55

Argh bad start to weekend. Friday spent 50p on biscuits after gym for kids. Then school fair - thankfully didn't spend too much - possibly £6 or so? Didn't mind things like ice cream for £1 but wow things like bouncy castle £1.50 for 2 gos? Think the school needs to rethink this.

Saturday did big shop at sainsburys £112. Shock Reason we went there was to do with the fact that I needed to pay on credit - can't believe this. Hmm But also had lots of coupons so I think I generated something like1000 points off so that's ok.

Then threaded my eyebrows for £9. And dinner out with friends £22.... Argh.

Sixth NSD on Friday. Might manage a bonus seventh today which would be good.

Still got £70 of my food budget and payday is Wednesday so really pleased with that.

I'm spending this afternoon trawling websites for cheap and free days out over the summer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/06/2013 10:35

Tescos are doing red split lentils £2 for 2kg. World food aisle.

I'm stocking up for winter.

MinimalistMommi · 23/06/2013 13:11

I've done my £70 food shop this weekend which mostly organic food for family of four, I need to try and make everything last until Friday and not get temped to pop over to Sainsburys which is three minutes away to buy extra if I can't be bothered to cook! I'm determined this week to stick to our £70!

ArtemisatBrauron · 23/06/2013 15:54

Hey MinimalistMommi, I didn't realise you were on here as well as the minimalist thread.

I was thinking recently that in a lot of ways minimalism isn't as compatible with frugalism as you'd think... I got the "tightwad Gazette" book and the author NEVER throws anything away, her house sounds like a warehouse of ripped tights and toilet roll tubes...

MinimalistMommi · 23/06/2013 16:49

Hello Artemis Grin
I need to be frugal without keeping all the crap stuff Grin
I'm interested in frugalism from a minimalist point of view, living as well as possible without wasting money if that makes sense Hmm

MinimalistMommi · 23/06/2013 16:50

Oh, and I'm not usually on this particular thread, but I do lurk on here and credit crunch in general.

takeaway2 · 23/06/2013 17:31

NSD 8! Grin Spent too much last two days so happy that today was nothing. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Raaraathenoisybaby · 23/06/2013 18:05

3.20 in the gym cafe because my friend was working and just charges me a random small amount for coffee and lollies etc.

Yesterday NSD until I went out in the evening which cost me about 45 inc taxis which makes me feel ill!

Rainy weather is good for not spending as dc happy to play indoors Grin

KinkyDorito · 23/06/2013 19:49

Hello all. Poorly cat still with us - which is great - but new diet and pills costing £££££. Vets bill was £500. Food is £12 a box, which lasts 3 days. Tablets are £10 a week. So, we're looking at an additional £160 a month or so to keep him going and that's without vets visits.

Sigh.

Of course we are delighted he is okay, I don't want to give the impression that we aren't, but I'm a bit sad at the expense at a time when we are already stretched. I'm hoping once world's most expensive holiday has passed, we can really start to crunch that budget. I've been much more restrained this week, but do admit to sending DH to the shop for the odd chocolate run as I'm trying to do second job in stressful conditions and find myself comfort eating through it. I have not yet turned to takeaway, so that is something.

Need to try harder!

Dentist tomorrow; vet Tuesday. More ££££

So tired and fed up. Feel like hitting my head against things. After 2.5years of having DD sick and on chemo, I feel like we've had our share of shit luck for a while. But, NO! Destiny seems to fancy piling a bit more on me. I'm also sick now and have to go for a load of tests. Just. Marvellous.

Need a lottery win.

KinkyDorito · 23/06/2013 19:52

Lord, I'm a misery.

Thanks there's some flowers to cheer you all up after my woe. Or maybe Wine? Grin

northender · 23/06/2013 22:19

I'll join you kinky. our main family car broke down on Thursday so we've spent the weekend looking for a replacement that we can ill afford. Still, things would be much worse if we hadnt been frugal.

northender · 23/06/2013 22:23

kinky I hadnt read all your post. Hope things improve for you soon. You deserve a lottery win Smile

ArtemisatBrauron · 23/06/2013 22:46

kinky Wine for you! I know what you mean - as soon as I started getting serious about trying to get out of debt, stop spending etc, I needed £200 worth of emergency dental work, got told I was in debt to EDF for energy etc. It is sod's law... not that this makes it any easier! Just know it will pass and good times will surely come soon.

mommi I just feel like a fake frugaleer sometimes as I have no desire to save old envelopes and paste labels over them to use again/save old tights to cut the leg out and wear with other, cut, one-legged tights (I kid you not).
I want to be frugal by not buying mountains of crap I don't need or use, and getting rid of the said crap I already own fits into the minimalist thing I guess.

NSDs today and yesterdayGrin

OH has been spending money, dinner on Friday for our aniversario, quick bite at lunch time yesterday between dropping DDs at their friend's, petróleo, bowling and lunch today and dog food. I have no clue how much he's spent.

DD took a loan of £13 yesterday as was going To the pictures with the boy friend and his dad. She came back with all the money despite offering To pay for some things. They ended up doing bowling, amusenent arcade, late lunch then movie with snacks.

Today both DDs bought tank accessories for their turtles, DD1's turtle turned up after 9 days on the missing list.

I saved myself petróleo, parking and £7 on Friday by not using the discount voucher for a manicure

Kinky really hope things start improving for you soon.

You too north

WellThatsLife · 23/06/2013 23:19

Hoping to have a cheap week this week but dd2 wrecked her school shoes and playing out shoes. Then last thursday broke the iron by dropping it and the strimmer blew up on me. Looks like this week will be expensive instead

AdoraBell · 24/06/2013 03:13

Just remembered, OH bought Apple TV Today. DDs are Hmm at that one because he keeps pleading poverty.

Hope it doesn't cost too much to replace the school shoes, could she do without the playing out shoes for a while?

MamaTo2FabBoys · 24/06/2013 07:12

Oh dear it sounds like everyones had a hard few days, i'll follow on with my list of expenses. I spent £60 on some lovely clothes for my boys for their holidays as they were in the Asda sale. Saturday we went to a museum so that cost a few pounds and yesterday I was having a good nsd until my son begged me to buy him a dvd of play.com so that cost £6. It all adds up and now I need to swap things around on my budget to pay it all. Oh the joys.

KinkyDorito · 24/06/2013 07:36

Thanks for all kind words Thanks.

Artemis - it's like dieting. As soon as you start one, someone brings cake to work. Same thing with financial diet. We say we are going to be more careful then all these things spring up.

Adora sorry if you've said this before, but do you manage your money separately to your OH? Tell me off if I'm being too nosy! It's just he seems pretty unrestrained, whereas you are trying to be frugal. Unless you don't live together? It's difficult when you haven't got the same approach. It also depends if he can afford it. For example, I have spent without restraint for many reasons (a lot of them to do with being fed up, managing DDs cancer which gave us a 'sod it' approach to life) but I can't really afford it. We tell ourselves we make good money and should be able to have/do nice things, but we don't have available money - plenty of available credit. Hence I think it will be a good 7-8 years of careful budgeting before we can clear what we owe. The other thing I find weird is we tell ourselves we deserve it, buy it, yet house still looks shabby and we still have very little. Have no idea how that works... Confused

Happy NSD to you all.

Dentist will thwart mine. Bah!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/06/2013 08:02

I manage money separately from my dh, we have the joint account for bills but anything else is seperate.

I like to save with occasional splurges and he fritters money away.

ExasperatedSigh · 24/06/2013 08:49

Kinky we're off to the dentist this morning too, deep joy. My teeth are crap so I am bracing myself to need work done.

Sorry to hear the cat has cost you so much. The cost is stressful, no matter how much you love them. I was furious with the universe when our cat racked up that massive bill a few months ago, while obviously being glad he was still with us.

roguepixie · 24/06/2013 10:48

Hello Frugaleers, have been out of action all weekend and therefore have had three NSD's Shock. Yes, count 'em. THREE days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and am on target to spend nothing today. Before you all keel over in shock at my most splendid NSD-idness let me tell you why ...

I fell down the steps outside the house whilst tidying up after gardening and sprained my ankle!! So, it was merely the lack of ability to get near any shops that stopped me Grin. Amazing what being hobbled will do to your purse!!

Aiming for NSD today but do have a shop coming tomorrow.

Kinky, glad to hear kinkycat is still with you but do understand the headache the bills cause. It is a nightmare and, following so hard on the heels of your other worries, is the last thing you really need on your plate. I also understand the emotional spending - as soon as that 'sod it' switch gets flicked on then it's game on. Being aware of it is a good step forward, at least for me it is. I try to be mindful of the fact that throwing caution to the wind won't help me at all - it won't make for good relations between DH and myself, won't help my current problem and will, in fact, exascerbate (sp?) any financial issues I may have. It's taken a while but I finally realise that I can't spend my way out of a hole!!

Think this week will be fairly non-spendy - DH is away and I am going to re-line our curtains Shock. Two pairs, full size curtains. Please send me positive vibes as I have a feeling I may be descending to the 3rd level of hell before the week is out Grin.
