every time i go to sainsburys, at least 1 item that i buy regularly has gone up since the last time i was there....

its getting bloody depressing now!!!

i know there are other cheaper shops but i dont have a car and sainsburys is within walking distance from my house. i hate doing it online as had so many problems before that its put me off for life - plus i don't get enough to get free delivery etc.

is this the same for most shops now? the mozarella cheese ball that i regularly buy has now gone up from 44p - 69p overnight, and the ham i buy has gone up 10p. the crisps i like have gone up 20p, and many other things are gradually creeping up too. Everything is going up in price except my salary!!

It's the same at Tesco, prices change almost daily, regularly prices go up loads so that they can reduce it by 5p a couple of weeks later and then claim they are reducing prices.

Mysupermarket.com has a nice feature where it shows you the price variation of a particular item over the last 12 months with its highest and lowest scores.

I am just resigned to the fact it's a massive game for the supermarkets, I never expect to pay the same price twice!

It's bad.

Ad the "offers" annoy me.

Chicken breasts in tesco, normally £3.50.

Yesterday were £6, but bogof.

Today they're £4 each, but buy 2 for £7.

I'm going through a phase of not really looking at the prices as I've got so fed up with it all Sad. I just know it's all going up. I'm buying less but visiting the supermarket more often to top-up as and when.

Butter always gets me, £1.19 for basics butter. When DS was born 6yrs ago it was something like 70p.

sainsbury's are bad for this, I notice prices going up all the time. Also they have just got rid of the free delivery for shops over £100 in my area, therefore I hate them. I was also buying their basics stuff merrily until I realised what terrible value most of it is, because it's just much much smaller, and by weight it's nowhere near good value.

I've actually found Asda great of late. Cheap, decent food. I always felt that I didn't mind paying a little bit more for sainsbury's because for example the fruit lasted longer, now it's just the same as everywhere else, so why pay more?

Can't brave Asda delivery though, I've heard too many horror stories.

big bag of prawn crackers used to only be about 67p about a year or so ago. now they are around £1.20!!

maybe its time to give up treats and eating nice food for the comfort of it and the fun of it. maybe its now time to start eating only what i need when i need it and as cheap as i can get away with. luxuries will soon be a thing of the past at this rate

Most times, when I spend say £100, I look at what I've bought and think "Is that it??". I don't buy much in the way of crisps, chocolates either so it is mainly meal stuff. Did get a brilliant bargain the other day in Sainsburys. They were selling big pieces of roasting beef half price (not even reduced). I got a piece for a tenner. As there are only three of us, we cut it into three so three roasts there for £10 Grin just need the veg which is obviously not too expensive.

UHt milk...£4 for 4 x 1 ltr cartons last week.
£4.60 this week.
And what about the companies charting more and reducing the size of the product?
My ds2 loves those thorn tins caramel square things. There used to be 12 in a pack - about 2 months ago. Same price, but nw there are only 10 in a pack.
Do they think we are idiots??

Ocado is the best blind del service and I have tried em all!l
Asda and tesco are the worst.
Then sainsbos.
Ocado are great (and cheaper than tescos!!)

Badvoc, you've hit the nail on the head.

Yes, they do think you're stupid. Or Loyal. Or you associate that brand with quality and a lifestyle.

Out of everyone on this thread only one poster has actually said the prices have made her change her behaviour and go to a different shop.

It's like my pil, every week we get the "it was £x this week for our shopping" rant but they would never consider going to another supermarket because as far as they are concerned only their chosen supermarket does "nice" food. In reality they buy mainly branded food which would be cheaper at Asda, or the pound shops or homebargains, but mil doesnt like the people who shop in those stores. I shop in all those stores for bits and pieces.

They drive a 60 miles round trip to a wholesaler to buy chicken at the same price as I pay in Aldi which is literally next door to them. They could walk to it.

Their shopping bill could go up as much as that supermarket wants it to and they would still shop there. They would struggle financially before even considering going somewhere else, truth be told they are already feeling the pinch but I dont think they realise yet, Confused partly because as more and more people struggle it becomes normalised.

I try to buy the "value" stuff , some of it is actually nice! If you have time to cook from scratch and freeze some of it that helps. A tip I heard recently was to add oats to mince when making shep pie etc, diced carrots bulk it out too.
As you say some of the special offers are a con. You have to look into it all, but that takes time.

I have absolutely no loyalty to any shop.
At all.
I like certain shops, sure.
I go where the best deals are and where I feel I get the best customer service.
I shop at, variously, the co op, ocado and aldi.
I also use amazon and john Lewis for online shopping.
Argos is awful for online shopping. Avoid!
I agree they do think we are stupid.
I know people say they use tesco vouchers for Xmas/days out etc BUT tesco is more expensive than ocado! And just before the clubcard vuchers exchange days they put all the prices up! I can't be the only person that has noticed this, surely?
And tesco trolleys are by far the most dirty and worst kept I have ever used.

I realise this may sound crazy but I no longer shop at any of the big names as I got fed up with getting ripped off.

We now shop at Waitrose almost exclusively and have found we're no worse off. This is largely due to prices staying more static, fewer BOGOF's and not being mischarged for stuff.

Add to that the customer service and it's a no brainer.

I like to shop around and am very careful to know my prices for items. For more expensive items like washing detergent and spirits etc I ALWAYS use my supermarket.co.uk to do a price comparison and stock up on the offers. I like to go to aldi for the basics and then stock up on the rest elsewhere including visits to the butchers for meat. it all takes time and effort but I hate the thought my family is being ripped off.

Oh and I was overcharged twice in waitrose in the last 2 weeks so I would not exempt them from close supervision either...

I shop with Ocado and at my local, very well priced farm shop: we have an excellent one. I really couldn't believe how little their fresh produce costs.

Aldi/farm shop for fruit/veg. I certainly don't go to the former for a customer service experience.

Waitrose for meat. Essentials range knocks socks off middle range tesco/sainsburys and quality is superb.

Market fruit and veg is so much cheaper.
Even not the £1 bowl stalls do things like 3 avacados for £1 instead of 2 for £2 in loads of packaging in co-op.

The delivery service must be a bit of a postcode lottery as I use asda and have never had any problems! Cheap midweek delivery slots, and even cheaper if you know you'll be in all day are the 8hour delivery slots.

I have noticed asda's prices shooting up though. Their smart price cordial jumped in price, and they have stopped doing their smart price salsa I think.

I try to time the shops for their whoopsie bread and meat reductions and sling them in the freezer as these items really add up.

We have Heron frozen foods in my area which is great for nice ham/pastrami, yoghurts, cheese, etc. Also have plenty of cheap greengrocers which are MUCH cheaper than any of the supermarkets.

I am fed up with it too. I never seem to stick to a brand I like anymore because the prices change from day to day. I am annoyed that the potatoes in supermakets have shot right up! I definitely want to check out Aldi.
