I don't think I've convinced dp of the joys of Aldi?

We did our grocery shopping there today. It's usually Morrison's seen as dp works for their transport dept. and we have a dissy card. I fancied trying Aldi as firstly I like the size of the store, small enough to get round quickly and also I like a lot of their products. Plus I think we'd still save cash?

Sadly dp doesn't share my enthusiasm. He's the grocery shopper usually as he actually enjoys it I go along under duress.

We managed to get most things we needed today except a few items that they don't stock. Hash browns, onion rings, sesame oil and beef stock cubes. So we're going to have to go elsewhere for these anyway. I still think we've saved money but I suppose once we've driven to another supermarket to get these things then maybe it's false economy?

He was impressed by their fruit and veg though so that's promising.

Does he drink, did you not show him the cheap and quite lovely beer and wine?

Yes we bought some wine. He loves beer too. I'm hoping I can convince him to do Aldi first as it is sort of on the way to Morrisons? Another thing that isn't good though is they don't take credit cards. Pah!

The little french beers dh loves, 10 bottles for about £3.50 i think and at the weekend he brought the Steinhauser (sp) which were bigger bottles and he said it was really nice.

Keep trying, it's the only supermarket my dh likes to go to!

Are there different sized Aldis as am sure the one in my home town is bigger than this one?

Yes i think they vary, they opened a new one about a five minute drive from us, i was stupidly excited when we got there though it was much smaller and only had half the stuff we normally get so we drove 20 minutes the other way to our usual one, i was gutted!!

If your dh is anything like mine the cheap cooked meats will be a winner too!

He's having the beef in his sarnies tonight. I had a bit and it was lush. And only £1.49 for 4 slices! The cooked ham was a bargain too.

They do take credit cards! I pay with mine there all the time

You'd have to spend a lot of money on petrol for it not to be worth it though.

We used to spend £60ish in sainsburys two years ago, Now I spend £30ish in aldi.

£30 is almost a whole tank of petrol for me so it's always going to work out cheaper for me to go to aldi.

The way I sold it to dh was that we have more money in the bank and for fun things if we shop there.

MIL wont buy the ham (I get it) because she doesnt know if she'll like it!

Big fan of Aldi here! but mine does not take credit cards either- probably better this way!

It's because CC transactions cost more than debit card transactions.

It keeps their running costs down.

We spend £90 to £100 in Morrisons. In there today we spent £60. Ok so we didn't get everything but we can get the rest in Asda or Morrisons.

Oh they didn't have tinned chickpeas either. And the soy sauce was small.

I think we can cope with this but dp is the main food shopper so it's up to him I suppose. I just love bargains though and we do need to cut back as I haven't found a job yet. Funnily enough I sent an application to Aldi but no joy as yet? Not even sure if there's any jobs going?

MrEconomy is mightily impressed with Aldi - our weekly shop would be around £55/£60 in Coop, but is usually under £30/week in Aldi. Some weeks it's under £20. That's for two adults and one toddler.

I don't buy meat though, and if I did, not sure I'd buy it from Aldi as not sure it would be that great as far as animal welfare is concerned. Although I have seen that they stock free range chicken.

My latest coup is getting him to use an Aldi razor system - £1.89 for the razor and some blades, as opposed to £7 something for £4 Gillette Mach 3 blades.

I just had a thought, couldn't he draw cash from his credit card account or can't you do that? I've never had one hence not knowing this.

I told him we should at least do some of our shopping there but he's keen to just go back to Morrisons

You can withdraw cash on a cc but it's on a different level of interest to purchases.

Maybe he didnt like the food as much as morrisons.

I let him read this thread. I think it swayed him a bit?
