Ideas for budget birthday party present for 4 year old boy?

has anyone got any tips for a good present for a 4 year old boy, which ideally is under £5 but (hopefully!) looks worth more, or at least very good value for that price?! Got a spate of parties coming up which I won't be able to afford unless I get some good ideas for presents!
Thanks :)

I got a good deal from Book People, all the books written by The Gruffalo author...for £7...still using them for gifts now! How about a word eith the Mums...she might appreciate some tshirts or underwear instead of another toy to tidy away...George at ASDA is excellent value for money. My DS has his 3rd birthday in a month, and anyone who has asked what to get him Ive said a contribution to the garden activity centre Im getting for him Smile

The Works often have good crafty stuff and kits suitable for that age group. Or, there's loads of books, toys and craft stuff on Amazon for less than a fiver.
Or, if there's a Home Bargains near you they often have good cheap stuff for presents, and cards for 29p!

iseenodust · 20/08/2012 22:04

Do you have a The Works discount book shop? I've picked up boxed wooden dominoes for £2, crafty kits for not much and they almost permanently run 3 books for £5 on preschool/primary age books. At the moment they are selling badminton/ bats & ball sets for less than £5.

x-post Lexie obviously likes a bargain too !

Lots of stuff in poundland/pound store...can get some sets of army men and tanks, knights and dragons, we got two lots of 3 'transformers' for DSs present from his sister for his 4th birthda last year which looked bulky and impressive.
It will look more if you stick to a 'theme' e.g. dinosaur sticker/colouring book and a packet of platic dinosaurs!

My top score recently came from an outdoor shop and it was a head torch. Total winner and they do really good offers. No one else will get secret spy camping kit. He loved it.

SlinkyPebbles · 20/08/2012 22:38

Where did you find the head-torch Rose? What a cool idea. How much did you spend?

cat811 · 21/08/2012 09:44

Lots of great ideas - thank you!

I'd go with a bulk order from the book people, or I've often given a t-shirt which tends to go down well with the mums too!

I think that Sainsbury's are doing a sale on toys atm, so that is worth checking out.

Also, scour local charity shops and visit car boot sales - you may find unopened books/puzzles/toys etc. I recently got a Transformers puzzle for my nephew for Xmas for £1 at a car boot sale!

Mine would like chalks, bubble wands and bath bombs and all will be used up so don't require the mum finding a home for them.

TK Maxx is often a good place for birthday presents. Also Sainsburys were doing 2 for 1 on back to school/crafty type stuff recently.

Head torch was in Mountain Warehouse or one of the similar fleece / tent / rugged kit shops. It was 3 items for £7 and I got the head torch, a flask and a carabina. He was delighted.

Have you tried the Argos online clearance section - you put in your postcode and it shows everything on sale in your nearest branch

blueslipper · 25/08/2012 13:52

That's a brilliant find penguins.
