In november we paid £835 for a tank of oil. Its now going to cost me £1200 to refill! That's an enormous increase. I'm quite shocked!

My brother lives in ireland and has this and it has rocketed He is quite worried as he lives on his own and it is a huge expense

virgiltracey · 07/03/2011 08:19

It is a massive expense. We got through the tank so quickly too. It was only filled on 24th November (although we have of course had a lot of cold weather) We are lucky since we do actually have the ability to pay for it (although I will be food shopping very carefully for the next month or so!) but it muct be crippling for those on a very tight budget.

bloody hell! i am sooo glad we moved out of our old oil heated house when we did, we could not afford oil now.

virgiltracey · 07/03/2011 08:30

I think I'm going to have to buy everyone hot water bottles and ration the heating!

It is a nightmare for him he only heats one room and has a hot water bottle and an electric blanket in emergencies! He has severe mental health issues and so doesn't work and his home is his sanctuary it is a shame as he is forever decorating it and making it lovely but the heating is crippling him

MummyBerryJuice · 07/03/2011 09:28

OMG! We had a top-up in January but haven't had any since. We ARE on a tight budget. Am going to have to start having a cooler house.

Thank god forthe woodburner.

littlerach · 07/03/2011 09:34

I feel your pain!

here they say it will drop though.

Moodykat · 08/03/2011 12:26

We've been heating the house with electric heaters as I never have a spare £400 to get the smallest amount of oil! Have no idea how much it must be costing and are refusing to let the man in to read the meter burying our heads in the sand!

cheesesarnie · 08/03/2011 12:36

luckily we ordered ours on friday but its up over the weekend.our hot water goes off the oil too so weve no choice but to keep it topped up.

BeenBeta · 08/03/2011 12:40

Erm... have you not noticed the news?

Th oil price has rocketed by over 50% in the last few months because of the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.

DublinDoll · 08/03/2011 13:00

We are sitting here with jumpers on rather then turning the heating on. Last fill of oil at the start of Jan cost me ?760, it would cost me ?900 to fill now. We have also started walking and cycling more because petrol is so expensive.

cheesesarnie · 08/03/2011 13:14

so no ones allowed to state that oils gone up unless we state we know why.dammit i didnt realise.

new2cm · 08/03/2011 13:21

I remember complaining in 2004 when a company charge me 32p per litre instead of 28p per litre. I received a refund.

Now I can only dream of such prices and I have to haggle hard to get anything within the 50-55p per litre price range.

I won't need a refill until August/September but this price increase is unsustainable for us. Our household sets aside £2,000 per year of our budget for fuel oil and we simply cannot afford to set aside more than £2,000.

What's not helping either is that the price of electricity has increased as well.

Indith · 08/03/2011 13:25

I think it is terrible to have something that is an essential for a lot of people fluctuate so much. I know that the price of gas and electricity through mains suppliers also increases but it is not as extreme and is announced ahead of time and you always have the op[tion of shopping around, of fixing, of changing deal etc which you simply don't if you are on oil.

We are not on mains gas and use solid fuel. Sometimes I dream of changing to oil to be able to have a "normal" heating system with a timer instead of getting up and lighting the fire in the cold but at least the price of coal is far more stable.

new2cm · 08/03/2011 13:29

I am informed on another thread that I was lucky to be quoted 50p per litre. It seems the average at the moment is 68p per litre Shock.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is not sustainable for our household.

Eddas · 14/03/2011 13:21

I have just ordered our first lot of oil since July and it was £140 more for the same quantity Shock I know the prices have gone up but was still shocked! The lady on the phone did say that the proces before new year were a lot worse so I at least missed that.

wickedorwhat · 14/03/2011 18:08

i am furious at the price of oil. i know its just me but the more expensive it gets the more i seem to use. i have only been able to get 500 litres at a time cos i dont have 900 quid on hand to fill up the tank. its very difficult to budget for it as the price fluctuates so much and so dramaticaly. our hot water runs off theoil too, we have run out a few times as well and had to scrape up the money or not pay a bill. oh its all bills, tax talk about bleeding the tank dry. we are all bieng bled dry. grrrrrr!!!!! the oil companies are doing very nicely thank you as are the government.
