Hi,

I hope this is the right place to put this.

On saturday I bought 5 things from Superdrug and the total was oddly high. Outside I checked the receipt and 3 things were overpriced on the till. They said it was because they had been altering prices due to the VAT change but one item was on the shelf at £1.49 and the till said £4.99. In total 3 products were £7 too much at the till.

So after all that waffling check your recipts !

It is amazing how common this is. I used to think my sister was being paranoid checking her receipts all of the time but have since realised how frequently mine are wrong. It all adds up.

Just to add, when I complained about this (nicely) in Dunelm the over day, having been over-charged by £2, they were really rude.

My dad religiously checks his receipts - ie he knows exactly how much the bill is going to come to before he pays (maths whizz my dad!) He finds mistakes all the time. He does smaller shops than me though so I guess it is easier (& doesn't have 2 children demanding magazines etc etc)

I have a quick scan through to make sure there are no glaring errors & still find quite a few.

I agree with flippinggorgeous it is amazing how ungracious stores can be when it is their mistake - some I have found to be downright obstructive - I guess it would be rude to name shame whsmith any stores

they used to see me coming - with my receipt to complain - they are better now but i still check

I always add up my shopping as I go round the supermarket and I know what it should be to within 50p when I get to the till. It's only occasionaly wrong, but still worth keeping an eye on I think.

I think i would have kept that original recepit as well as the corrected one.
sent a copy to head office with a letter of complaint and then another to the office of fair trading.

that is ridiculous

I've had the same experience in Superdrug as well! I'd added up the total as I was going round the store & the bill was over £4.00 more! They weren't particularly apologetic about it- I too got some excuse about VAT.

I have had this problem several times with Superdrug. It is the only store that I scrupulously check the reciepts.

I always check my receipts after listening to a talk by someone from the trading standards.

One more thing to add. If a product in Tesco is advertised at one price, say £1 but at the till you pay £1.50, you are entitled to double the difference you have paid extra.
So £1.50, difference 50p x 2 = £1. You get the item for 50p.It is their policy.

Yes, I bought two Mr Muscle cleaning sprays in Tesco yesterday @ £1.60 each, because they were on BOGOF. This didn't come up on the till so I got £3.20 back - meaning I got the sprays for free! Yay!

I've had this happen to me several times at Sainsbury's, and have sometimes only realised when I've got home over 4 miles from the store. The lady on customer services told me that if it ever happened again, I should call the store and they would give me a refund when I was next in. Worth knowing, as there's little point paying for 8 miles of petrol to go and claim 50p or so.

M O R R I S O N S.... EVERY WEEK....I am a regular in the queue for customer services... every week without fail something that should be on special offer doesn't come up as the special offer. They do it on purpose I am sure, to boost their profits.

Kbear i was going to say Morrisons. The manager in our local morrisons had a go at my mum when she made a comment about some weightwatchers biscuits she was buying on offer for a £1 she was overcharged for 3 weeks in a row. He had a moan that she didn't know how many prices they had to change by hand.

It happens to me all the time in Sainsbury's, especially with their offers, so I always check my recipes and useually end up the customer sevice desk.

If I get anything on BOGOF or similar I always check the receipts - last week I bought four children's books at Tesco on BOGOF, and only one came up as free on the till - so I was charged £6.99 too much! I joined the long queue at customer services....

Isn't it illegal to have one price on the shelf/product, and a different one at the till?

So, if a product is labelled £1.00 but it should be £10.00 and there's some error, you are entitled to get it at £1, no matter how much the shopkeeper might cry and be upset (had that experience, but I'm HARD ).

Morrisons yesterday. Bought two items the same that should of been on offer for £4 for the two. Was charged full prices for both, but different prices. Took receipt to counter and they refunded the difference but absolutely no apology. Rarely go there, will make it never now.

DewinDoeth - You're not right I'm afraid. It comes under law of contract. When you go to the counter with the product you offer to buy, the store accepts your offer.

No Dewin, it's classed as an invitation to treat only and they're allowed to pretend it was a mistake leeway for mistakes and they're under no obligation to let you have it for the advertised price if something different comes up at the till. I found this out after an angry call to Trading Standards after the Co-op refused to honour an advertised 3 for £10 offer on my dad's favourite wine when the barcodes didn't automatically ring through at that price. This means there's nothing, theoretically, to stop any store displaying any price they feel like in the hope nobody checks their receipts!

Co-op is bizarre at the till. Last year I bought a few packs of a two for one item which had been reduced to half price because it was at the date. The discount came up at full price so the bill came to zero. The cashier said there was nothing to pay, but I felt very odd walking out with a bag of shopping for zilch.
