Test expiry date?

I've had a runny nose, sore throat and coughing for a few days. Haven't had covid before and still had some tests so decided to do one. The expiry date on the box is 01 24. Test is showing positive. I'm not sure if the date has any affect on the result? It doesn't say end of January just January so should it still be working OK? Thanks

If it’s just a month and year then I’d assume it’s fine until the end of that month, so your test results are valid -wishing you a speedy recovery.

Usually that means the end of the month.

I've used expired tests. the liquid had dried up, so I had to combine the liquid from two tests into one, ( many times, as we have a cancer patient in the house, and all of us got covid at Christmas) As long as we got enough liquid together, the tests gave accurate results if positive ( confirmed at hospital) however, the older tests might be inaccurate for another reason, if they don't pick up current variants? possibly? I am not sure about this

I would say with old tests, positive is probably positive, but negative might not be negative

Thanks everyone. Liquid was fine so no issues there. Thanks for the advice I'll rest up.

I got a false positive from a recently expired test this week (did a PCR to confirm).

LaChatte · 25/01/2024 09:56

Sorry forgot to add the relevant part 😅, the lab said it had been happening more and more recently (recently expired tests coming up as positive, then PCRs showing negative).

LaChatte · 25/01/2024 09:57

Not that it made any difference as I still feel utterly rubbish!

Bramshott · 25/01/2024 09:58

I tried to use an expired test and most of the liquid had evaporated, so I think if there's enough liquid to give you a result then it's fine. Get well soon!

I think it was OK. I'll do more tests in the coming days, might as well use them up. Throat is very sore.

The liquid in the test is pretty much saline (that is, 0.9% NaCl) which you could make in the kitchen if you are desperate

Oh that's good to know, thanks.
