Just what the header says. Felt poorly yesterday, woke up with raging sore throat, sweats and cough. Took a test and instantly positive.

Apparently, we are not recording numbers any more. Has anyone else had it recently?

I thought we weren't supposed to test anymore? Nobody I know is testing

Only people we know still testing are the fully jabbed up hypochondriacs! You know, the type of person during the pandemic who still wore a mask when driving their own car, alone!

bonfirebash · 02/07/2023 20:56

@Sandrashand or people like me who need antivirals maybe?
Or who are around relatives having chemo?

Sorry, yes forgot that. Assume you also test regularly for the flu, and for all other commonly transmissible diseases then too?

Chocolateship · 02/07/2023 20:58

Generally my rule is if I feel absolutely rotten I do my best to stay in as whether it's covid or not no one wants to feel like shit. We have all had an absolutely vile respiratory illness this past fortnight, if we had tests I would have done one out of curiosity; zero energy, hacking constant cough, no appetite, nauseous, so achey it was agony lying down. There are a lot of grim illnesses out there though besides covid!

Someone who has flu absolutely knows they have flu, there'd be no reason to test. There are treatments for covid that aren't as effective for other viruses so it is worth testing if you have been identified as vulnerable. I hate these 'gotchas'- pathetic.

C1239 · 02/07/2023 21:03

Does anyone else feel guilty when it comes to work? I just feel like I’m letting them down when I’m poorly

Hope you manage to access antivirals in time if needed and that your relatives respond well to chemo.

bonfirebash · 02/07/2023 21:04

@Sandrashand there's nothing I can take for the flu but I am vaccinated yearly for it as I am also for covid and pneumonia
I also needed hospital monitoring when I had covid from the covid at home team

The antivirals cut deaths and hospitalisation by around 88% so it's important I test to get them asap. The sooner you start them, the better
I take all advice from my consultant who is the best placed to advise me on a rare disease

Influenza virus infections lead to a wide range of clinical manifestations, from severe pneumonia through to mild or even asymptomatic disease. So surely it makes sense to test for all viruses and diseases? Or does it not matter if you give the flu to a vulnerable person? It was the flu that killed my frail nan by the way.

I'm not sure what point you're attempting to make, by and large someone with actual flu will be well aware that they feel like absolute garbage and should take self responsibility and stay in (which is easier seen as though most wouldn't have the energy to be out and about)- someone who is poorly and needs medical intervention can have tests to determine whether its pneumonia etc, and there is a lot of debate whether someone who is asymptomatic can pass it on. I'm not really sure still what your gotcha is- you're pointing out how dangerous flu can be to people but then trying to belittle people who test for another thing that's also dangerous. I don't test anymore, but I don't have an issue with those that do as it doesn't affect me in any way shape or form. Yes flu sadly does kill people, as do many other things- if there are tests available and people are happy to/want to take one then I genuinely don't get what your issue is.

I'm not sure why you are pro people testing for Covid but anti people testing for other diseases? Are you a flu-denier?

hartman · 02/07/2023 21:24

those who currently have covid - what region are you in? hope you all feel better soon

littleblackcat27 · 02/07/2023 21:26

@Sandrashand

and your point is??

we should all test for flu if we have it??

No one has said they are ‘anti testing’ for flu- although most would be hard pressed to obtain a flu test from anywhere unless you’re tested in hospital.

Your posts seem nonsensical and argumentative for no practical reason.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/07/2023 21:28

The only person I know who is still testing has to do it because of her work. I'm mainly surprised anyone thinks it's worth a thread, you must know most people don't test anymore because the pandemic is over so most people have no idea if the last cold they had was 'covid' or an older variety of cold. New viruses have emerged throughout human history, sometimes they are very deadly (measles kills 50% of the population in naïve populations) sometimes less so (HIV took years to slowly spread before western medicine was aware of it). But once the population is immune enough to avoid serious disease it's not a big issue anymore.

littleblackcat27 · 02/07/2023 21:30

I guess people who have Covid or long covid think it’s worth discussing.

Hope you feel better soon @Homeheadaches

hartman · 02/07/2023 21:33

It is a big issue for people suffering from long covid unfortunately. Not to mention the increased risk of e.g. heart attacks and new onset diabetes after recovering from covid

Can you even buy tests any more? We have a box or two kicking around from when dh had to test for work. However I wouldn't buy them.

I get them free but I think so

@C1239

Yes, I feel awful. particularly as I work mostly with children and infants.
I work freelance for a few companies. 2 were great about it. stay away, and we'll find cover. One was, "Oh well, it is what it is." I felt really poorly on Friday and was asked to wear a mask, which is fine, but I had 20 kids screaming at me because they were terrified of catching Covid. which they may well have done. All because that manager wouldn't find cover.

If I catch it again, I'm just going to say I have diarrhea and vomiting. That way no one will want me anywhere near them.

I'm really cross with that manager, and I see her is a different light and am now very much on my guard.

Can I just ask why 20 kids, who are statistically at practically zero risk from Covid, and who will all already have had, or been exposed to Covid multiple times over the last 3 years and seemingly survived just fine, would be terrified of catching Covid (again)?

Also are you in the habit of lying to your boss about your 'diarrhoea and vomiting' in order to get some time off?

citychick · 03/07/2023 09:01

@sandrashard

1 Kids scream for many reasons. Covid is as good as any for a young child.
2 My health is my concern. No one else will be as concerned about my health as I would be . Nor you about your health. So, for the sake of a couple of days off every couple of years, yes, I would lie. I haven't yet, but I might.

  1. Your comments are really not helpful

Comments not helpful? What, stating the facts around the Covid risk to kids?

citychick · 03/07/2023 09:30

@sandrashard

are you ok?

OneSecond · 03/07/2023 09:32

@Sandrashand, facts are fine. Facts combined with nonsensical interpretation and offensive comments are not. You are completely derailing the thread and harassing people who are vulnerable and/or have vulnerable others in their lives.
