Conjunctivitis and Covid

Has anyone else had conjunctivitis with Covid recently?

I recently had a respiratory illness that's now caused pneumonia, and I also had conjunctivitis. I tested twice early on for Covid (around days 2 and 4) but it was negative, but with the new Arcturus strain seeming to also cause conjunctivitis, I'm wondering if it was Covid?

So I'm just interested if others have had it (and if you're in the UK or elsewhere?)

I know of three people who have had a flu-like virus with conjunctivitis (all adults) but all tested negative for Covid.
A very odd virus which seems to leave people floored for sometime.

That's really interesting to hear, @ParkCrescent - thanks for responding.

I think I must have got that too! Three weeks in... it turned to pneumonia and I'm now just about on top of the chest infection after two sets of antibiotics and oral steroids - and a chest x ray. And I'm absolutely wiped out by it still, but at least my oxygen is back at normal from a low of 92%
It started with covid type symptoms and conjunctivitis - but two negative covid tests on days 2 and 4...

It would just actually be reassuring to know if it was covid, because what worries me is if it wasn't and I now caught covid at the tail end of this pneumonia I'd be absolutely floored...

I wonder if the new Arcturus strain is being picked up by the current covid tests?

Yep! The Wednesday night my eye felt really gritty. Thursday I woke up and couldn't open my left eye!! Never had that before. Friday I tested positive!

CorsicaDreaming · 25/04/2023 17:57

@sweetbutpsychooo - I hope you aren't feeling too rubbish.

That's useful to know - I wonder if I did actually start off with covid too and just tested too early...

Yes I had covid at Christmas and developed conjunctivitis during it.

Grassynoel · 30/04/2023 19:17

Tickly throat with that something is brewing feeling for a few days. Bit of a runny nose for a day or two and tested positive on day 3. Had light conjunctivitis in my left eye on days 2,3,4 and 5. To be fair it isn't too rough. The worst is the extreme fatigue.

Nimbostratus100 · 30/04/2023 19:19

ive had covid with conjunctivitis this week. I didnt test positive until about a week in

HeavierThanHeaven · 30/04/2023 19:34

I’ve had a respiratory type virus this past week and a half (tight chest, very sore throat, blocked nose, tickly cough at night) and I then developed horrific conjunctivitis. I couldn’t open either eye whatsoever when I woke up. It wasn’t bad during the day, but come 8pm, my eyes got blurry & sore. After 4 days of this pattern repeating, it’s finally showing signs of easing up. I tested negative for covid a week ago, but haven’t tested since.

verdantverdure · 30/04/2023 19:53

Isn't it a thing with the haters version of covid? Arcturus I think it's called.

Plump82 · 30/04/2023 19:56

Yep I did. Mid March. I was on holiday and thought I'd burnt my eyelids but then started getting very unwell after it. Wasn't till I read in tbe news recently about this strain and conjunctivitis that that's what I had.

Rowthe · 30/04/2023 19:57

Yeah.

My kid randomly had conjunctivitis. She has never had it.
Then I had it and my other daughter.

And then daughter had a really bad viral illness.

And its really weird. Cos none of us have had conjunctivitis for years.

So a big coincidence if not covid related.

Rowthe · 30/04/2023 19:59

And I never catch conjunctivitis from anyone.

But this time. Three of us in the house got it. That never happens. I always practice excellent hand hygiene.

awakeeveeynight · 30/04/2023 20:01

Yes! It started with my father in law - he got red itchy eyes and then covid, then my husband, then son. I already had covid about a month before (without conjunctivitis) so I didn't seem to get it this time around. But they all got it with dodgy eyes.

SittingintheSunshine · 30/04/2023 20:02

Our family too.

me, 2dd’s. My mum, father in law, etc etc.

tbh had not even thought of covid.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 03/05/2023 19:08

I had Covid just over a month ago. Had a temperature which I hadn’t had first time and gunky eyes. Also tested negative at the start before later testing positive

Bubbles254 · 17/05/2023 18:07

I think I have may this. It started with a really bad sore throat and cold symptoms then conjunctivitis in both eyes. I now also have hives, did anyone else get these?

My son also had tiredness, lack of apetite then conjunctivitis.

I am testing negative though. Anyone know if the old tests work on the new variant?

Really interesting to read this- I had exactly the same with really bad sore throat which later developed into cough and temp . Negative tests . But I got the bloody hives - it’s about 5 weeks on and I feel fine but every day I break out in hives again. It’s driving me mad and I’m so glad to hear someone else has something similar.(although really hope yours don’t last this long !)

endofthelinefinally · 17/05/2023 21:26

The most recent strain of covid presents with conjunctivitis in children.
Adults are being hospitalised with it in SE Asia over the last 2 or 3 weeks. I have friends and family there and 3 of them have been hospitalised since last week.
I expect we will eventually hear more about it over here.

Sorry to hear they are lasting so long. Are you taking antihistamines? They at least help with thevitching and there is so evidence they are good for long covid.
