To ask if we’re heading for another lockdown?

TreeLine6 · 09/10/2022 11:32

So covid cases are rising and like clockwork, the likes of independent sage are back in the media calling for ‘protections’ like masks, isolation and social distancing to “avoid full lockdown”.

Is it time to reintroduce some measures like the rule of 6, a cap on large events numbers and maybe distancing and early closure for hospitality as independent sage are calling for?

Personally I feel that with vaccines and treatments, we are now in the best position we’re going to get with covid and would be very reluctant to comply with further measures, that themselves cause enormous harm.

Fundays12 · 09/10/2022 11:54

Nope and I won't be complying with any lockdown rules that they try to enforce either. I am fully vaccinated and my kids have missed enough because of covid restrictions.

QuestionableMouse · 09/10/2022 11:54

I wouldn't mind bringing masks back as a legal requirement but I work closely with members of the public who seem not to give a shit about coughing right in my face. Had covid three times, have long Covid which absolutely sucks. It's not just a cold unfortunately and it is still killing people.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 09/10/2022 11:54

No, I think with the vaccines and boosters available which help to minimise the actual disease when people catch it, we just have to learn to live with it like flu (which still kills thousands of people a year anyway).

Our economy just won't cope with another lockdown. And even during the last stages of having to wear a mask in shops, loads of people didn't anyway.

MysteriousMonkey · 09/10/2022 11:55

I don't know anyone, myself included, who would comply again. Not that it matters the Givernment won't do it their money the economy is too important

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/10/2022 11:55

No and I find it pretty astonishing that these threads are still popping up, given what we now know about the way COVID has mutated to the point that it is a mild disease and what we know about the state of the economy.

Another lockdown would be an absolute economic disaster and totally unnecessary.

NoMichaelNo · 09/10/2022 11:55

No, there will not be another lockdown.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 09/10/2022 11:56

the likes of independent sage are back in the media

Now there's your first mistake. Paying ANY attention the the likes of "Independent Sage". Bunch of nutters.

And no, we're not headed for another lockdown.

HappyBinosaur · 09/10/2022 11:56

I don’t think there will be another lockdown and agree with many PP that people wouldn’t stick to it now anyway.

But @Norwichgirl374 saying

It's all scaremongering tactics. Covid isn't as bad as there making out.

is appalling in my opinion.

My previously healthy son ended up hospitalised and seriously unwell with Covid complications and many others have developed Long Covid and heart conditions, and obviously there have been many deaths from Covid.

It’s one thing to learn to live with it, which we have to, but to deny it’s severity for some people is thoughtless. We still need to protect the vulnerable and be realistic about the potential effects.

notsosoftanymore · 09/10/2022 11:56

Several million with Long Covid, lots of research showing myriad effects eg
www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/05/immune-reactions-to-severe-covid-may-trigger-brain-problems-study-finds?
New variants appearing all the time (several new ones out there now) . It's like putting up with endless gridlock on the roads by saying 'I get caught sometimes but never mind I'm not giving up my car ever and anyone who doesn't agree with me is just wrong and I'm not going to listen'.

UneFilleDeBelleville · 09/10/2022 11:56

I suspect vulnerable people will be given advice on reducing risk and we may be asked (not required) to wear masks again. But there won't be another lockdown- not only are people starting to realise how much harm the last ones did, but also people simply wouldn't do it given what we now all know. Compliance with lockdowns was based on the idea that we were all in it together- try telling people they can't visit loved ones or attend a funeral when we now know how much absolute piss-taking was going on last time.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/10/2022 11:57

Are we going to be having the same conversation every year?

HideousKinky · 09/10/2022 11:57

No there will be no more lockdowns. We must rely on vaccines now.

YetiTeri · 09/10/2022 11:57

'Independent sage' were discredited a long time ago.

FarmerRefuted · 09/10/2022 11:59

I think its highly unlikely we'll see a return to lockdown unless numbers were so high it was crippling the country anyway and lockdown became worth the financial cost.

I do think that if there comes a crunch point over the winter where flu, norovirus, and covid numbers go too high to be manageable then there might be a return to some of the 'softer' measures such as masks, some degree of social distancing, free LFT testing and an encouragement to self-isolate if positive, they might even open the vaccine boosters to everyone who wants one.

Forfukzsake · 09/10/2022 12:00

I am prepared to stay away from others if I have coronavirus and to get annual boosters.

I will not do anything else at all willingly. I will not support another lockdown or wrecking the lives of our young people again or anything that tries to stop people living or socialising or having hobbies or getting an education or spending money or making money or accessing health or social care or maintaining their mental health.

LindaEllen · 09/10/2022 12:00

I don't care if they do announce one. I'm not spending another second away from my loved ones when the government don't even follow their own rules.

PurpleWisteria1 · 09/10/2022 12:01

PurpleWisteria · 09/10/2022 11:48

Some hospitals are reintroducing mask wearing - just the beginning.

Stupid to say you won't comply - if it's the law you have to or stay indoors.

Yes you would think wouldn’t you.
Except those who made that law very much didn’t.
It will never work again- not for this virus anyway.

Marmunia1066 · 09/10/2022 12:01

No, no way! I continued on as normal anyway through the lockdowns. We need to live with Covid. All I had was a mild headache for a few days and felt fine. And I have zero vaccines.

PinkButtercups · 09/10/2022 12:02

No. People won't comply. Unfortunately it's just one of those things we have to live with. Colds, flu etc are also on the rise because of the season we are in. Like every year. Not liking covid to cold or flu but it's obvious it's going to rise in different seasons.

WTAFSomedays · 09/10/2022 12:02

I can’t see any scenario where they’ll be another lockdown.

  • There are vaccines to protect the vulnerable or mitigate the most severe cases
  • Economy can’t afford it
  • People won’t comply given what they now know about govt parties and how poorly it affected mental health
  • Rishi and others have said in hindsight apart from the first lockdown it wasn’t necessary
  • We will always have COVID and have to learn to live with it. ZERO COVID not working out well for China is it.

People should take measures they deem fit for themselves and their own level of risk. And that is all.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 09/10/2022 12:02

No, we won't. But we already have teachers and TAs off again with COVID and our school is encouraging testing any cold symptoms. At the moment it seems to be sore throat, headaches and D & V. We are expecting another winter like last.

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/10/2022 12:02

@HappyBinosaur

With respect though and sympathy for what happened to your son, this absolutely isn’t a reason for draconian and unenforceable population level measures.

It is awful that COVID is still making some people very unwell but there are other viral and bacterial infections which are potentially dangerous. We don’t put ourselves into these drastic measures to guard against these, why should we inflict economic suicide on the country in order to protect a tiny minority of people from an intangible risk?

NotRainingToday · 09/10/2022 12:02

How do we even know how many Covid cases there are if there's no mass testing? I bet most households aren't paying for DIY tests and reporting the results.

Here’s Trish Greenhalgh from Independent Sage arguing that lockdown ‘harms’ were a myth twitter.com/saugust06/status/1578432542364946432?s=21&t=o76k4slBM0oainfkfKIQig

To paraphrase Mandy Rice-Davies, she would say that, wouldn’t she.
