To ask if we’re heading for another lockdown?

So covid cases are rising and like clockwork, the likes of independent sage are back in the media calling for ‘protections’ like masks, isolation and social distancing to “avoid full lockdown”.

Is it time to reintroduce some measures like the rule of 6, a cap on large events numbers and maybe distancing and early closure for hospitality as independent sage are calling for?

Personally I feel that with vaccines and treatments, we are now in the best position we’re going to get with covid and would be very reluctant to comply with further measures, that themselves cause enormous harm.

We now know it's airborne.
We don't need lockdowns, we need better ventilation - in schools, on transport, in workplaces. Properly invest in that, and in encouraging masking in crowded areas like transport and we could get cases right down.

And it would be worth the investment - my children have lost school days and I've lost a couple of weeks of work over the last couple of years because my children have caught it twice & were unwell for a week each time. (We opened windows, used filters and so we didn't catch it from them).

A friend has long covid and has had to give up their job. If you add up all the people needing time off work, all the people suffering from other ailments connected to covid, it's far cheaper to stop people getting it in the first place.

yep!

Just nope. For heaven sake. And even if everyone else hadn’t already done so admirably, I couldn’t even be bothered to explain why. It’s too obvious

Diamondsareforever123 · 10/10/2022 18:17

Don't be fooled Covid is still a serious illness. Get your booster and flu jabs, wear a mask in shops on public transport etc. Do what you can to prevent spread of Covid. But I reckon a lot of us will be dead with hypothermia before the winter's out, so I can't see another lockdown. There's no money anyway.

TrixieMixie · 10/10/2022 18:20

We're in a totally different situation from the previous lockdowns because in the first one, there was no vaccine and in the subsequent one/s the vaccine was in the process of being rolled out. Now everyone (apart from the anti-vaxx brigade) has been jabbed more times than a pincushion. Also, many people have had it at least once, so the combination of vaccination plus catching it will have boosted immunity. The normal path of viruses is that they mutate into being more widespread but less virulent. Covid was always expected to continue to circulate and indeed it is probably now endemic - but the hope is the effects for most people will not be too bad. In terms of overwhelming the NHS (which is the real issue here) I would be more concerned about the imminent flu season - most people have reduced immunity to flu because of.....the lockdowns. Get jabbed (for flu and Covid) and get on with your lives.

I want this to be a thing, please 🤣

Independent Sage can fuck off and take their lockdowns with them.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/10/2022 18:45

"THERE IS NO MONEY LEFT"

Also, in case this has passed you by, we are currently experiencing a little thing called a Cost Of Living crisis.

How do you expect the country to financially pay for these lockdowns? Furlough schemes went on about a year longer than necessary anyway, and no chance we can pay for it again.

I dont give a shit about covid. I nearly died from glandular fever and my friends primary school ages daughter nearly died from chicken pox. All viruses can be deadly.

pollymere · 10/10/2022 18:54

We don't need it. The number of deaths expected from Covid was actually not as bad as originally anticipated. The majority of people are vaccinated with people who now get Covid mostly being able to cope at home. What may be affected is schools. With poor levels of teacher pay and a severe shortage of supply teachers, schools may find they have insufficient staffing to cover lessons should teachers get Covid, resulting in year groups being asked to switch to online learning as a teacher can teach two classes online.

user26189065 · 10/10/2022 19:01

No, will just ignore it, even if they fine you it's only like getting a parking fine, so no shame there

Gingernan · 10/10/2022 19:10

No,no need for another lockdown, but I have noticed a recent rise in mask wearing in crowded places. It is very much out there, and we must not be complacent.Get your boosters...my last one was a year ago and as an over 70 still out in a ( quite careless) workplace,I want mine!
I was very shocked at the person who said they did not care about the threat to public health. If we are to avoid lockdown, which no one wants,or a serious surge in cases,we need to act responsibly! We are not children!

Gingernan · 10/10/2022 19:14

'I don't give a sh*t about covid?'
Is this the level of education on mumsnet?
What a shameful and immature attitude, and why do mumsnetters, with their prim and proper Dear Daughters etc, think it is big and clever to swear?

I’m very well educated, and I don’t give a shit about Covid either. Never have really. You may think swearing is a marker of intellect, education or maturity, but you’d be fucking wrong

LovinglifeAF · 10/10/2022 19:18

And I don’t have a dear daughter either

asblindasabat · 10/10/2022 19:19

lol nope. And I certainly wouldn’t adhere to another lockdown.

Gingernan · 10/10/2022 19:21

Agree,if you are worried, wear a mask. Personally I hate the idea of being at work with even a nasty cold and sneezing over everyone. The cold I had last winter made me feel more ill than either the flu or covid I had within a period of 2 months. At least no one wanted me to go into work with the covid, the others ailments,ah no,we soldier on with all that.

Ukoneday · 10/10/2022 19:22

Sage need to be saged themselves. They can do one as far as I’m concerned.

Honestly, I don’t care. It’s been shockingly mismanaged from the start and I’m playing no further part in it. None of it is my problem any more. I’ll get my jabs and stay home if I am unwell. That’s it. No mask, no staying home, no not meeting family members. This is my life not the government, random mumsnetters, or anyone else, and I’ll live it for the benefit of me and mine, not “the public” any more. I had Covid and honestly it was no more than a very mild cold, thanks to the sterling work on the vaccines. It may be worse for some people but that’s just unlucky.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 10/10/2022 19:23

Swearing's extremely big and clever.

Buckholm · 10/10/2022 19:23

No, there won't be another lock down in the foreseeable future. If the virus mutated into a very much more dangerous version, maybe then - but so far, Omicron outcompetes every variant that comes along and it's a mild illness for most people.
This year's vaccination programme is underway now which will give added protection to vulnerable groups and everyone over 50.

GoldenOmber · 10/10/2022 19:24

If we are to avoid lockdown, which no one wants,or a serious surge in cases,we need to act responsibly!

"If we all agree to this set of restrictions, we can avoid harsher restrictions" is another argument I find it hard to believe any more.

At the start of the pandemic, I thought: yes ok, makes sense, let's all try that. By now, I think: any lesser restrictions we agree to now never seem to stop stricter ones coming along later - in fact, happily doing something now just seems to pave the way for more restrictions coming later.

notprettybeautiful · 10/10/2022 19:25

Dear all the misinformed who think COVID is not worth bothering about.

Do you know anyone who has been incapacitated by long COVID? 10% of people who contract COVID get long COVID. There's no cure.

Do you know anyone who has died, or had loved ones die? Those were real people. Guess what...they're still dying.

How about anyone who's on one of the abysmally long NHS waiting lists because hospitals couldn't cope with the COVID patients. That could easily happen again. We don't have to wait until it's almost too late to do something.

How about listening to the scientists rather than whoever or wherever you're getting your current opinions... I could make some assumptions as to who they are and what their agendas are.

GoldenOmber · 10/10/2022 19:26

I could make some assumptions as to who they are and what their agendas are.

Do tell?

GoldenOmber · 10/10/2022 19:27

(also, anyone who thinks there is one single group of The Scientists where everyone agrees with each other and wants the same thing from government policy and exists only to better the advancement of mankind... probably hasn't met many scientists. They are disappointingly human.)
