Hi - as the subject says.....deep down I know the answer has to be yes but as I mentioned in my other message this afternoon, dd has severe OCD/anxiety and fears every sniffle / ache is covid. I know reassurance is no longer term reassurance, but since this pandemic started it has felt so stressful to me when to be alarmed or not. I do know that many , maybe most, don't give a sniffle or sore throat a second thought, but are we already back into the winter colds etc? I just see the covid curve in my area (Hampshire) going back up, after a lovely calm summer.

What's going on with covid around the country?

Kc

I've had a cold for the last few days. I did a Covid test and it was negative. TBH it doesn't feel anything like the covid I had 3 months ago. So yes, I think there are colds around.

StrikeandRobin · 22/09/2022 17:59

There are colds about, we’ve just had one but tested negative for covid the whole time.
However, the Zoe app on Friday said an increase of 20% for covid last week
but it’s difficult to know the actual figures when so few are testing now. Even asymptomatic nhs staff no longer have to test twice a week.
there is a hospital inpatient increase due to covid of 37.5% in my area.
No masks & no testing means it’s going to increase significantly over winter. A huge worry for those of us with CEV loved ones.

Work in a school and the last week has seen a massive increase in staff and students testing positive for Covid. At the same time a lot of staff and pupils people have a heavy cold as I do myself. I am testing daily atm as I have been in close contact with a number of positive cases but do far, so good. So yes, covid is unfortunately spiking but the common cold/regular flu/chest infections etc are also raging.

Jules912 · 22/09/2022 19:43

I've got an awful cold, which I got off DD. Pretty sure it's a cold as her Covid test was negative and I only had Covid 3 weeks ago so surely can't have it again so quickly!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 22/09/2022 19:47

It's now cold/flu season so yes, they will both will be increasing. I have my flu jab booked for next week.

Try and reassure your DD that while COVID can be serious, it doesn't mean instant death.

Does she wash her hands regularly etc?

Having said that, I would imagine there will be a spike from all the thousands of people crammed in together see Elizabeth II's funeral. None of them were wearing masks.

Kcc73 · 22/09/2022 20:34

Thanks for your messages.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy : she has had covid - in April, and she was unwell for few days but not too bad; but the thought of it/getting it again/others being contaminates put her on high alert. Which in turn puts me on high alert!

Yes it's going be a problem for sure knowing how much covid is a problem now not testing/minimal mitigation etc. I think I might start wearing a mask sometimes - not because I am overly anxious but actually makes sense in a way to reduce all colds etc.

Stay well all!

You can still buy covid tests from local pharmacies etc if it helps to reassure you both.

Creameggs223 · 22/09/2022 20:57

House hold full of colds right now all tested negative

DeliberatelyObtuse · 22/09/2022 21:44

6 of my son's friends came down with covid after the Reading Festival

I think it's still around when you get large groups in close contact

MenopauseSucks · 22/09/2022 21:49

My Mum was in hospital recently & I was visiting so I was testing twice a week & wearing a mask.
I came down with a stinker of a cold but tested daily & it was just a cold. I still visited my Mum but wore two masks.
The hospital said there are plenty of viruses around that are not Covid.
I do know however 2 people that have recently tested positive for Covid having worked through all the lockdowns without catching it! They've just got bad cold symptoms.

GetOffTheRoof · 22/09/2022 21:50

DH had a stinker of a cold last week and now I've got it. Negative LFT every day last week for him and I've only bothered with 2 this week - not likely to be Covid after so many negative tests.

Nose like a tap, choking, coughing, pain across the top of the chest (unbelievable pain!) after sneezing or coughing, unable to sleep at night despite being absolutely exhausted, feel like death warmed up, no fever but occasional sweats, very very sore throat..... I'm on day 4 and starting to feel less horrific, but the pain side of this one is a beauty. I bought the drowsy version of a cough syrup and had a double dose before bed last night so I could flipping sleep. Will be doing the same tonight!

We're in a V low Covid area - apparently 3 cases currently recorded in the entire town of 16,000 people and we don't exactly go partying these days!

2anddone · 22/09/2022 21:52

I currently have Covid for the first time. Live in Norfolk and there seems to be loads of people testing positive here....though not recording their test results

ScarlettSunset · 23/09/2022 07:03

There's definitely colds around. My fiance has just got over a dreadful cold. He tested but it wasn't Covid.
I've also known a lot more people to have Covid very recently though than I have previously.

CirreltheSquirrel · 23/09/2022 11:48

I picked up COVID last week at an internal conference along with a lot of colleagues but what's interesting is that there seem to have been two different bugs circulating - there is also a group who have picked up sore throats but are testing negative.

HelloMist · 23/09/2022 20:44

We've had colds, negative LFT so far. I'm feeling pretty awful today (just want to sleep, fever, sneezing).

The ONS survey has rates in England estimated at 1 in 70 people (lagged by a week or 2) and starting to increase. Government testing isn't an accurate reflection any more as few people qualify for free/reportable tests now. You can't report the ones you buy.

PinkHeadphones · 23/09/2022 20:47

Ds1 has been off school for the last 4 days, cold and sore throat, testing negative for COVID. DS2 had a cold over the long weekend although not as badly as DS1, also COVID negative

Kcc73 · 24/09/2022 12:00

A big mix of covid and colds - which I guess I knew. It's back to thinking is this just bad cold or covid again! I had sore throat actually Thurs and feeling rough with fatigue, aches, sniffles; imagine a few years ago if there were long threads about these type of common cold symptoms?! I'm testing negative to covid...my daughter actually hasn't seemed too stressed by fact I got cold symptoms which good. Just wish we could go back to not having to worry so much about if it's 'contagious' covid; I feel quite rough....could feel same if covid but was reflecting I would probably feel worse just by knowing it was covid, if I tested positive!

On a positive - maybe folk will be less blazze about when have colds; totally get people need to go to work, but in our office it would seem folk didn't feel needed wash hands , say after blowing nose; clean down shared keyboards etc. I know we have to get our immune systems working but I hope folk will me more mindful of spread....but probably not!

Hope those unwell a quick recovery
