Migraine after covid

Has anyone else seen an increase in migraine attacks after covid?

I tested positive about 6 weeks ago and since then my migraines have been much more frequent. Previously I was getting around 3 or 4 a month which was bad enough, but having started tracking them again I've logged 8 in the last three weeks.

I'm hoping this is a temporary thing but starting to think I might need to try some kind of preventative as I feel I'm relying on sumatriptan too often now. I'm worried about the side effects of all of them though!

Hi @Utini I suffered from migraines for 6 months after covid back in 2020. The longest one was 16 days, before I started taking preventatives and a triptan! Had never had them before and then they just stopped of their own volition. Horrible things, hope they subside for you soon.

Thank you. Which preventative do you take? How have you found it in terms on side effects?

Glad yours have stopped!

I was on 40mg propanalol and took rizatriptan when I felt them coming.

I did have side effects - a bit of lethargy if I remember rightly but the main one was that I couldn't run on them (I run approx 3x a week)... It massively slowed me down and felt so so hard. It was necessary at the time though, I'd rather have been a bit shit at running then have put up with the migraines! But it was really noticeable.

My dc.seems to have had first migraine after covid. Within about 4 weeks.
Do you find it impacts mood?
As she got into a lot of trouble that week

I had terrible headaches post vaccine. Doc said it was inflammation in head area so was given naproxen. Then I got COVID and omg I have never had a migraine like it. Only eased after being sick.

These happened a few times with no warning so I saw the doc again and it was due to high blood pressure following covid which was one of my many long covid stuff I'm dealing with.

Now being treated for that and luckily they have gone. Just wanted to flag in case that's what's causing yours.

ah sorry to hear @Utini ! Flowers

I have chronic migraine which was definitely worse during and after COVID, I already take a prevenatative though

One thing I'd look at is how many triptans/painkillers you've been taken recently? You might be slipping in medication overuse headache.

Generally advised not to have more than 2 triptan days a week (10 a month) and 3 painkiller days a month (15 a month) as this can lead to MOH, however for some people it can be lower unfortunately
