Visiting the UK

Hello. I am visiting the UK next week. Where I am now, masks are very much still needed. Am I right in thinking that they aren[t in the UK? Can I wear one on public transport anyway or will people think I am weird? Any other Covid-related things I should know? Thanks.

In England, you are not legally required to wear a face mask anywhere however some places might have set their own rules. I think you still have to in healthcare settings perhaps.

You can wear one wherever you like. Public transport, particularly the tube, it probably won't get you any strange looks but out and about generally it would look increasingly unusual.

Some people-myself included- are still wearing masks, not many of us, but nobody gives us a second look tbh.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 20/04/2022 16:56

Masks are not required except in some close contact places (for example, we went to the denist yesterday and they still ask you to wear masks). You'll be fine wearing one if you want to, though - depending on the area and the demographic, lots of people are still wearing them (seems to be mostly older people round here).

There are basically no covid rules or restrictions in the UK now by law. Some places/attractions etc might have their own rules, though.

I went to UK recently too, I live in Italy where masks are still required. It did feel very weird to be around people not wearing them, especially arriving in the airport, I never took my FFP3 off until I was outside and in my rental car. I decided to go into an almost empty, huge shop without one, but I had moment of sheer panic and lasted about 10 seconds before I put it on, no one looked at me. Next stop was Sainsburys, and I thought there's no way I'm going in there without one, so on went the FFP2 this time & I felt fine and actually I was surprised at how many people were still wearing masks there, mainly older folk though, but no one batted an eyelid. I even wore one in the town centre when it was busy and again, fine. It does feel very Pre Covid there, quite weird & with no green pass controls too, I was a nervous about going to pubs etc, but I managed to not get Covid, but also made sure I kept my distance.
Even went I went at Christmas it was a very different feeling to here in Italy, masks were used then too in UK, but nowhere near as much as they are here, but they do a lot of home testing, which is not the culture here at all.

Hi Deadivy - I[m in Italy! I guess we are so used to masks and Green passes now that it will take a while to get used to not having them.

(As an aside, I can no longer type apostrophes with my Italian keyboard after the MN site change! Can you?)

Masks are no longer obligatory in the UK, but you can wear one if you wish. Some people are, though use of them is dropping off substantially except in medical settings.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 20/04/2022 18:09

Most people are still wearing them in supermarkets but not in other places.

HardyBuckette · 20/04/2022 19:22

It's a minority of people still wearing them but you wouldn't stand out if you did.

Ciao! So far I'm ok with an Italian keyboard. I'm using a laptop, I haven't tried with my Android phone yet. Can't use an English keyboard to save my life, everything's in the wrong place!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/04/2022 05:30

No they aren't required but no one will look at you funny for wearing one.

CuddlyCactus · 21/04/2022 08:45

We're in uk are you going @rifling ?
Scotland has only stopped compulsory facemasks this week so loads of people still wearing them.
About 50% in shops and more on public transport so you certainly won't look out of place

Nutella22 · 21/04/2022 09:05

Don't worry about looking out of place if you choose to wear a mask- in England it's estimated that 1 in 14 have the virus so if you want to minimise the chance of getting Covid on your trip then an FFP2/3 might help.

yellowsuninthesky · 21/04/2022 22:16

I'm in England and still wearing a mask in shops and on public transport.

Bornslippery · 21/04/2022 23:56

I haven't warn a mask since we didn't have to. There are about 15% of people that still are though and it is a personal choice. If you want to then fine if you don't then fine
